Discussed changes
Emily Tan Mei Shan’s project diary
Our group officially worked 2 weeks before the second-awaited lecture-free
week.
Andrew, Thalia, Aru and I were at first seemingly less dedicated for this
Twitter topic that we chose for our assignment 2: Project Plan.
For me, I recently lost heart to use my Twitter account and even though it
was only few years ago that I was addicted to that social network or
microblogging site – I felt a little bit annoyed choosing it as the social
network that we were going to analyse or study for our assignment.
However, I learned so much about Twitter even though on my first week of
this assignment (September 14th
2014), I just did some fun or light reading
on Twitter like how Jack Dorsey wanted to be Bruce Lee and how Twitter
changed its format from Arial to Helvetica.
Also being a former Twitter addict myself, I remember the time when this
super lame troll named AmandaSwaggie who would tweet racist, homophobic
and insensitive tweets then she will get terrible and hurt people’s feedbacks
on her timeline. I remember having fun picking on her as well. I did not talk
about her in our group discussion because our main focus on Twitter is how
Twitter became successful as an ATTENTION ECONOMY microblogging site.
Attention Economy The currency of the New Economy won't be money, but attention -- A radical
theory of value (http://archive.wired.com/wired/archive/5.12/es_attention.html).
Thinking about YouTube and all my favourite YouTube stars even though I
know my group chose Twitter as the topic for my project plan.
4. 4
I found out that even though some smaller YouTube stars do not make
money but they do it so the public can watch them and discuss about them.
Then I thought of Rebecca Black during the lecture on Attention Economy
because I wonder why would a 13-year-old want to put up a song that has
rarely much meaning – well in my opinion, the lyrics were senseless but she
did become famous because of it.
“No one would put anything on the Internet without the hope of obtaining
some. It's called attention. And the economy of attention - not information
- is the natural economy of cyberspace.”
Then I think about the rest of us who put up silly things on Facebook or
Twitter – our photos, our statuses or our tweets. We hope our friends would
read it and comment on it. We sometimes type senseless things on Twitter
just to grab some attention from people in order to gain followers.
I remember when I was a Twitter addict – I used to troll on Nicki Minaj fans
and Justin Bieber fans. I would get 100s of followers so yes I understand
what it is meant by ATTENTION ECONOMY.
The quiet ones in class do a lot of thinking in their heads so when online
social networks came into existence, the quiet ones suddenly became either
very popular or people pick on them even more for posting all kinds of things
online.
It used to be just blogging – many girls used to blog on food, hair products,
fashion and travelling but now because of Instagram and Facebook – girls are
Facebooking and taking pictures of almost everything including themselves
naked.
Back to Twitter
Then thinking about all that stuff makes me feel more inspired to work on
my Twitter project – finding out who invented it and why.
5. 5
Then my group and I came up with our project schedule as to what to do and
when to collate the work. We also have our own Internet Commerce Facebook
page.
Internet Commerce Facebook Page
I posted loads on information on our group’s Facebook page like the President
Obama using Twitter to promote his campaign and because of his Twitter
usage – he became the first Black President of USA.
I also posted on Twitter revolution on Iran because young Iranians tweeted on
what is going on during the elections – CNN COULD NOT COVER the event
because THE IRANIAN government blocked the CNN SATELITE and banned all
texting temporarily.
However, the Iranian government forgotten about Internet and the power of
social networking – TWITTER.
I have also posted other Twitter stories on there to help my group be in the
KNOW on why Twitter is a successful ATTENTION ECONOMY.
Collating the work and more
After putting my Twitter history part on Jack Dorsey and Evan Williams
onto my PowerPoint slides I thought I was done.
Then I saw that my PowerPoint slides were very little-worded and not enough
facts. I did not submit it to my group’s Facebook page because I was not
satisfied with it.
I continued working on it after I worked on my other assignments and my
other things. Then when I am finally done with the PowerPoint slides I
submitted it onto our group feeling really happy about it.
Then I had to catch up on my sleep because been working on too many
assignments at one goal.
6. 6
Then we had a group meeting before the due date – I realized that my
PowerPoint slides needed to be condensed because it was too worded. HA!
Now I know that I must be careful with how many words I need to put on
my PowerPoint slides.
I really hope for the best with my Project Plan.
