GlaxoSmithKline
in New Zealand Supporting
New Zealanders
in all kinds of ways
GlaxoSmithKline is a world-leading, research-
based pharmaceutical company with a strong
local heritage and an even stronger local
commitment. Internationally our quest is to
improve the quality of human life by enabling
people to do more, feel better and live longer.
Here in New Zealand we take up the challenge
to bring new medicines to market, to improve
local research and development skills, and to
educate healthcare providers and consumers.
We aim to support New Zealand communities
directly and through a strong local operation,
adding value to the economy, and to society.
kiwi heritage
Supporting New Zealanders with a
1715 – Plough Court
Pharmacy, the forerunner
of Allen & Hanburys Ltd,
is established in London
by Silvanus Bevan.
1865 – Mahlon Kline joins
John K Smith’s company
as a bookkeeper, eventually
moving into sales and
acquiring a scientific
knowledge of drugs
and medicines.
1873 – Joseph Nathan
establishes the trading
company at Wellington,
which later forms the basis
of the Glaxo Company.
1842 – Thomas Beecham
launches the Beecham’s
Pills business in England.
The laxative becomes
widely successful.
1859 – Beecham opens the
world’s first factory to be built
solely for making medicines at
St. Helens in England.
Many companies with great histories have
combined to make the leading global research
and manufacturing organisation that is
GlaxoSmithKline. The Glaxo in our name traces
its history to the colonial New Zealand of 1873,
when an entrepreneurial Joseph Nathan
established the trading company that was the
forerunner to Glaxo’s milk powder drying
operation at Bunnythorpe, Manawatu.
And that’s just a part of the history that
makes up GlaxoSmithKline. A heritage that
includes Nobel Prize-winning researchers,
business luminaries and social visionaries from
innovative companies like Allen & Hanburys,
Burroughs Wellcome, Beecham Laboratories
and Smith-Kline & French.
From Bonnie Babies to Better Medicines –
GlaxoSmithKline is still caring for New Zealanders
today. With a broad therapeutic spread and local
market leadership, we make many of the medicines
that address the key health concerns that affect us all.
Supporting New Zealanders through
global innovation
The international resources of GSK are huge.
With headquarters in the U.K. and U.S.A. and
over 100,000 employees worldwide, the
Group operates 108 manufacturing facilities
in 41 countries. Total annual sales are around
NZ$65 billion of which a massive NZ$10 billion
is spent in the relentless search for new and
better medicines.
Even at this size, GlaxoSmithKline holds
just 7% of the world pharmaceutical market.
Why be so big? Developing innovative
medicines carries huge risks. Only a tiny
fraction of the thousands of compounds under
research ever make trial stage, and the
proportion that successfully pass those tests
and make it to market is even smaller.
On average, it takes NZ$750 million and
12 years to develop each new medicine.
Couple this with the massive investment
needed for the new generation of genetically-
based, super-targeted medicines, and it’s
clear that GSK must be strong to create better
medicines for the future
GlaxoSmithKline is market leader
in New Zealand with sales of around
NZ$100 million in pharmaceuticals and NZ$47 million in
consumer products. GSK provides treatments for diseases
and conditions that affect hundreds of thousands of
New Zealanders: asthma, migraine, diabetes and hepatitis
medicines, antivirals for HIV-AIDS, antibiotics, vaccines and many more.
local commitment
Supporting New Zealanders with
Fifty eight of the staff at GlaxoSmithKline are
involved in educational activities with medical professionals,
patient caregivers and advocates and with patients themselves.
Through 140 outstanding staff, and the most
substantial operation of any local
pharmaceutical company, GlaxoSmithKline
supports New Zealanders directly. Not to
mention the wide range of suppliers and
associates who rely on the company.
From the commercial division, through
warehousing, logistics and quality control
to the medical and regulatory staff and the
administration and management teams that
keep the company running smoothly – the
focus is on the highest quality in every facet.
It’s a philosophy of excellence that extends
to the whole of GlaxoSmithKline. There can
be no margin for error as a reliable supplier
of leading-edge medicines.
With leadership in many of the areas where
New Zealanders’ needs are greatest, medical professionals rely on
GlaxoSmithKline products to help their patient lead longer, healthier lives.
GlaxoSmithKline makes leading medications for
the ailments that concern New Zealanders
most. Asthma, infectious diseases, anxiety and
depression, smoking cessation and hepatitis are
all areas where New Zealanders experience
significant health problems. They are also
where the breakthrough medicines developed
and made by GlaxoSmithKline can lead to
longer, more fulfilling lives.
GSK makes and markets more than 100
medicines in New Zealand, including many that
are household names. And for good reason,
because there’s probably not a medicine
cupboard in the country that doesn’t hold
at least one GlaxoSmithKline product.
Supporting New Zealanders with

Medicines are only part of the story.
GlaxoSmithKline is committed to increasing the
knowledge of healthcare users and caregivers
through educational material and clinics
provided via doctors, online information at
www.gsk.co.nz, as well as newsletters and
personal communication with patients.
We want people to get the best from our
medicines through correct use and by having
a real understanding of how their
treatments work.
The aim is to increase the number of patients
who seek medical help (for many conditions,
reporting rates are very low), and to provide
useful diagnostic tools and education for
medical practitioners and pharmacists about
treatment patient education and ongoing care.
information
Supporting New Zealanders with
Our website, www.gsk.co.nz contains a
wide range of useful healthcare and product
information, all easy to access and understand.
GlaxoSmithKline has a great reputation in the
New Zealand medical community, where we
are often an integral part of patient
care. As well as being a principal source
of information about new medicines and
treatment protocols, we train medical
professionals, give exposure to international
experts and specialists, and sponsor or run
medical conferences and meetings both
nationally and overseas.
GSK provides resources and specialist staff
for diagnostic clinics and patient follow-up
systems. The aim is to continually help raise
the standard of patient care and medical
expertise in New Zealand.
It starts from the beginning of medical
careers with post-doctoral scholarships for
two New Zealand medical students to study
at the GlaxoSmithKline research facility at
Weir in the United Kingdom. We also offer
Nursing scholarships and a Maori Health
Research Fellowship.
medical know-how
Supporting New Zealanders with
Worldwide, GlaxoSmithKline invests
about NZ$10 billion each year on pharmaceutical
research and development – more of which could
be spent locally. In New Zealand, the company runs
many internationally-funded clinical trials that keep
local medical researchers and practitioners up to
date with the latest international developments.
knowledge society
New Zealand is striving to create a knowledge
society. GlaxoSmithKline New Zealand shares
the vision of creating knowledge-based
industries and knowledge-based social systems
– including healthcare.
We think the elements are linked. GSK is
working with New Zealand’s fledgling
biotechnology industry and with Government
to create a health system that uses
breakthrough pharmaceuticals to create
a healthier society.
The spin-off is that the creation of a
competitive biotechnology industry needs a
business and social infrastructure that thrives
on innovation.
GlaxoSmithKline is working towards a
New Zealand where people lead longer,
healthier, more productive lives; where the
economy and health systems are boosted by
investment in locally-based research and the
work of highly trained medical professionals.
Supporting New Zealand‘s
giving something back
Supporting New Zealanders by
GlaxoSmithKline is proud to support Variety,
The Children’s Charity and the GlaxoSmithKline
Variety BASH. It’s a fun-focused rally through
the highways and backroads of New Zealand
that raises serious money for needy Kids.
It happens every year through the generosity
of New Zealanders, the antics of the Bashers
who run the madcap vehicles that make the
BASH and the efforts of the many celebrities
who willingly give their time to support this
great cause.
GlaxoSmithKline has also been a long-time
supporter and principal sponsor of Youthline
in New Zealand. Youthline is the first port of
call for thousands of distressed young people
every year. We fund free 0800 calls from
anywhere in New Zealand, and help Youthline
through fundraising, promotional and
conference support. It’s a privilege to be
able to help.
Youthline answers 20,000 calls annually
from young people who need someone to
really hear them. Follow-up counselling and
courses run by Youthline-trained volunteers can
help turn young lives around – for the better.

GlaxoSmithKline
in New Zealand Supporting
New Zealanders
in all kinds of ways
GlaxoSmithKline is a world-leading, research-
based pharmaceutical company with a strong
local heritage and an even stronger local
commitment. Internationally our quest is to
improve the quality of human life by enabling
people to do more, feel better and live longer.
Here in New Zealand we take up the challenge
to bring new medicines to market, to improve
local research and development skills, and to
educate healthcare providers and consumers.
We aim to support New Zealand communities
directly and through a strong local operation,
adding value to the economy, and to society.
kiwi heritage
Supporting New Zealanders with a
1715 – Plough Court
Pharmacy, the forerunner
of Allen & Hanburys Ltd,
is established in London
by Silvanus Bevan.
1865 – Mahlon Kline joins
John K Smith’s company
as a bookkeeper, eventually
moving into sales and
acquiring a scientific
knowledge of drugs
and medicines.
1873 – Joseph Nathan
establishes the trading
company at Wellington,
which later forms the basis
of the Glaxo Company.
1842 – Thomas Beecham
launches the Beecham’s
Pills business in England.
The laxative becomes
widely successful.
1859 – Beecham opens the
world’s first factory to be built
solely for making medicines at
St. Helens in England.
Many companies with great histories have
combined to make the leading global research
and manufacturing organisation that is
GlaxoSmithKline. The Glaxo in our name traces
its history to the colonial New Zealand of 1873,
when an entrepreneurial Joseph Nathan
established the trading company that was the
forerunner to Glaxo’s milk powder drying
operation at Bunnythorpe, Manawatu.
And that’s just a part of the history that
makes up GlaxoSmithKline. A heritage that
includes Nobel Prize-winning researchers,
business luminaries and social visionaries from
innovative companies like Allen & Hanburys,
Burroughs Wellcome, Beecham Laboratories
and Smith-Kline & French.
From Bonnie Babies to Better Medicines –
GlaxoSmithKline is still caring for New Zealanders
today. With a broad therapeutic spread and local
market leadership, we make many of the medicines
that address the key health concerns that affect us all.
Supporting New Zealanders through
global innovation
The international resources of GSK are huge.
With headquarters in the U.K. and U.S.A. and
over 100,000 employees worldwide, the
Group operates 108 manufacturing facilities
in 41 countries. Total annual sales are around
NZ$65 billion of which a massive NZ$10 billion
is spent in the relentless search for new and
better medicines.
Even at this size, GlaxoSmithKline holds
just 7% of the world pharmaceutical market.
Why be so big? Developing innovative
medicines carries huge risks. Only a tiny
fraction of the thousands of compounds under
research ever make trial stage, and the
proportion that successfully pass those tests
and make it to market is even smaller.
On average, it takes NZ$750 million and
12 years to develop each new medicine.
Couple this with the massive investment
needed for the new generation of genetically-
based, super-targeted medicines, and it’s
clear that GSK must be strong to create better
medicines for the future
GlaxoSmithKline is market leader
in New Zealand with sales of around
NZ$100 million in pharmaceuticals and NZ$47 million in
consumer products. GSK provides treatments for diseases
and conditions that affect hundreds of thousands of
New Zealanders: asthma, migraine, diabetes and hepatitis
medicines, antivirals for HIV-AIDS, antibiotics, vaccines and many more.
local commitment
Supporting New Zealanders with
Fifty eight of the staff at GlaxoSmithKline are
involved in educational activities with medical professionals,
patient caregivers and advocates and with patients themselves.
Through 140 outstanding staff, and the most
substantial operation of any local
pharmaceutical company, GlaxoSmithKline
supports New Zealanders directly. Not to
mention the wide range of suppliers and
associates who rely on the company.
From the commercial division, through
warehousing, logistics and quality control
to the medical and regulatory staff and the
administration and management teams that
keep the company running smoothly – the
focus is on the highest quality in every facet.
It’s a philosophy of excellence that extends
to the whole of GlaxoSmithKline. There can
be no margin for error as a reliable supplier
of leading-edge medicines.
With leadership in many of the areas where
New Zealanders’ needs are greatest, medical professionals rely on
GlaxoSmithKline products to help their patient lead longer, healthier lives.
GlaxoSmithKline makes leading medications for
the ailments that concern New Zealanders
most. Asthma, infectious diseases, anxiety and
depression, smoking cessation and hepatitis are
all areas where New Zealanders experience
significant health problems. They are also
where the breakthrough medicines developed
and made by GlaxoSmithKline can lead to
longer, more fulfilling lives.
GSK makes and markets more than 100
medicines in New Zealand, including many that
are household names. And for good reason,
because there’s probably not a medicine
cupboard in the country that doesn’t hold
at least one GlaxoSmithKline product.

Medicines are only part of the story.
GlaxoSmithKline is committed to increasing the
knowledge of healthcare users and caregivers
through educational material and clinics
provided via doctors, online information at
www.gsk.co.nz, as well as newsletters and
personal communication with patients.
We want people to get the best from our
medicines through correct use and by having
a real understanding of how their
treatments work.
The aim is to increase the number of patients
who seek medical help (for many conditions,
reporting rates are very low), and to provide
useful diagnostic tools and education for
medical practitioners and pharmacists about
treatment patient education and ongoing care.
information
Supporting New Zealanders with
Our website, www.gsk.co.nz contains a
wide range of useful healthcare and product
information, all easy to access and understand.
GlaxoSmithKline has a great reputation in the
New Zealand medical community, where we
are often an integral part of patient
care. As well as being a principal source
of information about new medicines and
treatment protocols, we train medical
professionals, give exposure to international
experts and specialists, and sponsor or run
medical conferences and meetings both
nationally and overseas.
GSK provides resources and specialist staff
for diagnostic clinics and patient follow-up
systems. The aim is to continually help raise
the standard of patient care and medical
expertise in New Zealand.
It starts from the beginning of medical
careers with post-doctoral scholarships for
two New Zealand medical students to study
at the GlaxoSmithKline research facility at
Weir in the United Kingdom. We also offer
Nursing scholarships and a Maori Health
Research Fellowship.
medical know-how
Supporting New Zealanders with
Worldwide, GlaxoSmithKline invests
about NZ$10 billion each year on pharmaceutical
research and development – more of which could
be spent locally. In New Zealand, the company runs
many internationally-funded clinical trials that keep
local medical researchers and practitioners up to
date with the latest international developments.
knowledge society
New Zealand is striving to create a knowledge
society. GlaxoSmithKline New Zealand shares
the vision of creating knowledge-based
industries and knowledge-based social systems
– including healthcare.
We think the elements are linked. GSK is
working with New Zealand’s fledgling
biotechnology industry and with Government
to create a health system that uses
breakthrough pharmaceuticals to create
a healthier society.
The spin-off is that the creation of a
competitive biotechnology industry needs a
business and social infrastructure that thrives
on innovation.
GlaxoSmithKline is working towards a
New Zealand where people lead longer,
healthier, more productive lives; where the
economy and health systems are boosted by
investment in locally-based research and the
work of highly trained medical professionals.
Supporting New Zealand‘s

Supporting New Zealanders by
GlaxoSmithKline is proud to support Variety,
The Children’s Charity and the GlaxoSmithKline
Variety BASH. It’s a fun-focused rally through
the highways and backroads of New Zealand
that raises serious money for needy Kids.
It happens every year through the generosity
of New Zealanders, the antics of the Bashers
who run the madcap vehicles that make the
BASH and the efforts of the many celebrities
who willingly give their time to support this
great cause.
GlaxoSmithKline has also been a long-time
supporter and principal sponsor of Youthline
in New Zealand. Youthline is the first port of
call for thousands of distressed young people
every year. We fund free 0800 calls from
anywhere in New Zealand, and help Youthline
through fundraising, promotional and
conference support. It’s a privilege to be
able to help.
Youthline answers 20,000 calls annually
from young people who need someone to
really hear them. Follow-up counselling and
courses run by Youthline-trained volunteers can
help turn young lives around – for the better.

What is PROPECIA?
PROPECIA is the only prescription pill
proven to stop hair loss in men. PROPECIA
was discovered and developed by
Merck Sharp & Dohme, the pharmaceutical
company responsible for more medical
breakthroughs than any other.
The Science to Stop Hair Loss in Men
A key factor causing male pattern hair loss is
the hormone DHT. PROPECIA stops hair loss
by reducing levels of this hormone in your scalp.
This allows your hair to grow normally again.
In clinical studies over 2 years, PROPECIA
stopped further hair loss in 83% of men, and
resulted in significant new hair growth in 66%
of men with male pattern hair loss.
