Done By: Unique Group
School Name: Qatar Secondary School for Girls
Environmental Catalysis Module: Students examines different types of catalytic systems, including heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysis. Depending on the knowledge they gained during activities, the students are then asked to design their projects.
Our Project: Factory’s smoke contains many harmful and dangerous materials for both human beings and the environment, this project will not only save our ozone layer but it will save many people in the future generation securing a breath full future for humanity.

3. • A substance when added to a
chemical reaction between
two reactants, causes an
increase in the reaction’s rate
while in the same time is not
consumed by the reaction at
all and returns to its original
state after the reaction has
ended.
5. Bubbles of Oxygen and also
colorful water.

6. 1. Speed up chemical reactions which is time saving.
2. Decreases the heat required to carry out a chemical
reaction which is energy saving.
I. Yeast : used to help decompose Hydrogen peroxide
into Oxygen and water.
II. Vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) : used to help in the
contact process to produce sulfuric acid.
III. Alumina (Al2O3) : used in the Claus process for
converting hydrogen sulfide waste gases into
elemental sulfur
7. Using a Heterogeneous Acid
Catalyst
: to use a heterogeneous
catalyst
1. Methyl acetate solution
2. Methyl acetate solution + a catalyst –
beads-
3. Distilled water + a catalyst –beads-
1. Label 3 beakers with the name s of the
reactants.
2. Do a table on the PH scale of the solutions
and record the PH every 3 minutes.
3. Compare the results

the reaction
was active and fast in the 2nd
beaker, because :
1. The first beaker only had
the solution with no
catalyst to make the
reaction faster.
2. The catalyst added to the
3rd beaker doesn’t work
on water it works on the
Methyl acetate.
9. Using Metal Catalyst to
Degrade an Air Pollutant
1. to degrade an Air pollutant (Ammonia) using
a Metal Catalyst (Iron Fiber, copper turning
and copper granule)
1. Obtain the metal catalyst: iron fibers.
2. Set up apparatus as show.
3. Place catalyst into the reaction tube to make
a 2.5 cm length in the center of the glass
tube.
10. Iron fiber became poisoned very quickly unlike the
other metal catalysts which are copper turnings and
copper granules, are the ones that
lasted the longest.
11. to use Photo catalysis to
degrade Methylene Blue (MB).

13. • Introduction: Factory’s smoke contains
many harmful and dangerous materials for
both human beings and the environment,
this project will not only save our ozone
layer but it will save many people in the
future generation securing a breath full
future for humanity.
14. manganese dioxide is excellent to use in a filter to
convert the amount of carbon monoxide coming out of
factories into Carbon Dioxide which is less harmful.
1. It has outstanding abilities in converting CO into
CO2
2. Unlike other catalysts used to clear smoke it is
very cheap which is a great financial opportunity.
3. It has no known hazards to the environment.
15. Exposure to CO can reduce the oxygen-
carrying capacity of the blood.
And that leads to CO poisoning which
leads to headache, dizziness, weakness,
nausea, vomiting, chest pain, and
confusion. High levels of CO inhalation
can cause loss of consciousness and
death,
People who are sleeping or intoxicated
can die from CO poisoning before ever
experiencing symptoms.
16. What It’s Made of:
1. Box
2. Tube
3. Cotton with MnO2 powder
4. Metal plate
5. Something that burns.
How Does it Work
1. Burn something
2. Let the smoke get into the tube
which has the catalyst
3. Measure the concentration of CO2
before it went through and after
18. Since the
concentration of carbon
dioxide increased then
that’s that means that
carbon monoxide was
converted into carbon
dioxide.
