For Polish people, Christmas Eve is more important than Christmas Day. Families gather in the evening for a special dinner consisting of 12 dishes, including carp, herring, salads, and pierogi, once the first star appears in the sky. After dinner, people open presents under the Christmas tree, sing carols, and many attend Midnight Mass, while the following days are spent visiting relatives and eating more meals together.
