The famous Arctic explorer, Francis Crozier (1796-1896)
was born in Banbridge and lived in Avonmore House
which still stands today and is now called Crozier House,
opposite a large memorial erected for him there.
Age 13, Crozier volunteered for the Royal Navy and joined
HMS Hamadryad. In 1812 he served on HMS Briton and
in 1814 visited Pitccairn Island. In 1821 he volunteered to
join Captain William Edward Parry’s second expedition
(1821-23) to find the Northwest Passage. He returned to
the Arctic with Parry in 1824, which resulted in the loss
of their vessel Fury off Somerset Island. Crozier was pro-
moted to the rank of lieutenant in 1826 and in 1827 joined
Parry’s failed attempt to reach the North Pole. At this time
he became close friends with James Clark Ross.
Crozier climbed up the ranks and discovered much, he was
appointed the rank of commander in 1837. In 1839 Crozier
joined James Clark Ross, as second-in-command where
they made a significant penetration of the Antarctic pack
ice and discovered large parts of the continent.
In 1845, he joined the Franklin expedition of the Northwest
Passage. This was to be Croziers final expedition. Two ves-
sels set sail, the HMS Terror captained by Crozier and HMS
Erebus captained by Sir John Franklin. When Franklin died
in 1847, Crozier took command of the expedition and led
the battle to survive in the arctic wilderness. It lasted for
years and it is said that the remaining men had to resort
to cannibalism, Crozier was said to be the last to die. The
expedition was detailed in an autobiography written by
Martin Smith in 2007 titled ‘Last Man Standing’.

The first silver teapots were made in Ireland around
1702 until about 1730, when it was thought that tea was
consumed for medicinal purposes. The production of silver
teapots appears to have diminished in Ireland between
1730-80, where the production of china/ porcelain pots
took the forefront, with the exception of a few Cork pots.
Tea became more of a household beverage in the late 18th/
early 19th century and formed an essential element for the
many tea parties that occupied the upper classes and hence
the related accessories.

eras such as the Byzantine and Hellenistic periods in a modern way, by us-
ing both ancient and current techniques. His jewellery has been seen on the
likes of Elizabeth Taylor and Jackie Kennedy Onassis. In 2003 a museum

154 AN IRISH PROVINCIAL GEORGE III POINT-HANDLED SILVER
TABLE SPOON
mark probably that of John Williams (b.1771-d.1806) of Cork, marked “STER-
LING” c.1795, the tapering handled with neoclassical bright cut engraved
decoration and engraved with initials (c.2ozs). 24.5cm long
Silversmiths John Williams, John Warner and James Warner were all working in
Cork around the end of the 18th century. As the marks were not being registered
in Cork, it may be that the mark ascribed to John Williams was used by one of
the Warners and vice versa. However in light of the probable date of this spoon,
circa 1795 it is very likely to belong to John Williams.
John Williams served his apprenticeship under Carden Terry (exact dates
unknown) and it is thought that he worked independently between c.1791-
1795, and used the “IW” makers mark between those four years. John Williams
married Jane Terry, Carden Terry’s daughter, in 1791 and received Freedom of
Cork in 1795. Around 1795 John Williams and Carden Terry formed a business
partnership and used the mark “T&W”.
