John Lawless (c.1780 - 1837) a lawyer, entangled in the 1798 and 1803 rebellions and was categorised by the poet Shelley as a‘republican’. He had a
mercurial personality. O’Connell, to when Lawless gave his support on a conditional basis, said he was “almost always a nuisance to be managed”.The
even commemorated in the present lot is Lawless’s descent on Ballyboy to collect‘Catholic rent’ on the instructions of the CatholicAssociation.A force of
armed Orangemen commanded by Gray prevented his entry to the town.

The Paddle steamerThames crossing the Channel
Oil on canvas, 55 x 83cm
Signed and dated‘W. Dunnage, 1831’
€ 18,000 - 22,000
The SSThames, formerly theArgyle, has been marked in theAnglo-Irish maritime annals as a pioneering steamship, known as the first cross-channel steamer
in the world.
Though it is widely accepted amongst historians that theArgyle inaugurated the London-Dublin route, the details around the event are somewhat disputed.A
number of accounts claim that the steamer departed from London and made the journey to Dublin in 1816. However this somewhat contradicts another more
detailed account of the passage. This version of events is cited by maritime historian Nick Robins in his book,‘The ShipsThat Came to the Pool of London’ - it
is reported that the vessel travelled from Dublin to London in 1815 on her delivery voyage from the Clyde to new owners in London and that there were two
passengers on board the ship - IsaacWeld, Secretary of the Royal Dublin Society and his wife. It was in London that theArgyle was renamedThames, and put
to work on a route between London and Margate.
Irrespective of the specifics of the first voyage itself,Thames is widely credited with paving the way for the establishment of a regular service between Dublin
and London by the Dublin & London Steam Package Company; a route which was worked in its early years by a paddler named the Shannon, as well as the
Thames. This route remained in place for 150 years, with only periodical interruptions during the First and SecondWorldWars.TheThames was wrecked off
the Isles of Scilly in 1841 and sixty men were drowned.
In‘ATopographical and Historical Guide to the Isle ofWight’, written in 1833,William Donnan is listed as Captain of SSThames. The presentation salver
awarded to him in by the Dublin & London Steam Package Company indicates the high regard in which he was held within the organisation.
The second part of this lot is a painting of the‘SSThames’ at sea, signed and dated‘W. Dunnage, 1831’. Little is known about this artist, aside from his limited
oeuvre of British nautical paintings. The uniqueness of the name‘Dunnage’ and the coincidental link of its meaning (dunnage was commonly known as baggage
being brought onto a ship) with the theme in which the artist painted implies that there is a possibility that this artist worked under the guise of a pseudonym.

Two views of Headford Castle, Co. Galway
Watercolour, one inscribed in pencil,“Headford Castle, Co. Galway, Ireland Richard St George Esq.”
One sheet watermarked 1828, 146 x 228mm
Richard J St George (1789 - 1857) extolled by Dutton in his Survey of the County of Galway for his‘energy and taste’ in reviving his estate and the town of Headford. His
father Richard Mansergh added the name St George on inheriting Headford in 1775.This Mansergh St George, a solider in the American wars; during his absence the estate
and house was reported to have been wasted by “outlaws and vagrants”. On return in 1790 he set about reform but was killed in the 1798 rebellion. He is best known for his
full-length portrait by Hugh Douglas Hamilton in the National Gallery, mourning at the tomb of his wife. His son Richard, completed these improvements and embellished
the old castle of the St Georges. The present lot is a valuable documentation of his works.

IRISH SCHOOL (19TH CENTURY)
A view of the Casino at Marino, set within formal planting, woods beyond,
Watercolour, 170 x 255cm
later inscribed in pencil verso,“Temple at Marino,Lord Charlemont’s seat Clontarf,near Dublin,from Miss M.J Durhams’s papers 1865”
Whilst the Casino is often depicted in the 18th century it is surprising how sparse is the record of what it looked like in the 19th. In fact the 2nd Earl was an excellent
custodian of his fathers legacy until his death in 1863.The 3rd Earl was a lesser figure who sold the Dublin properties and altered the family’s house in countyTyrone
into a ludicrous pseudo-chateau.The casino, the finest neo-classical building in Ireland was left to its fate by unsympathetic barbarians and its restoration, admittedly in a
woefully degraded landscape, is a modern miracle.

Primrose, an army officer, made a tour of Ireland just after the famine. These two
views made on the same day record a part of his trip. The pattern which he stumbled
upon gives a spontaneous view of the gathering at what is now Healy’s Hotel and
with Lord Lucan’s lodge (and barracks to guard him). It is a very valuable and objec-
tive study of the social conditions prevailing at a precise date in County Mayo.

Maria Edgeworth records in her letters (ed. Pakenham 2018) that in the summer of
1835 scientists descended on Dublin and then proceeded to Markee to inspect the
worlds most powerful achromatic telescope made byThomas Grubb, some ten years
previous to the famous Birr telescope. She mentions Professor Rowan Hamilton and
Sir John and Lady Franklin (of Artic fame). This rare, apparently unrecorded litho-
graph, was probably produced to commemorate the event. Edward Joshua Cooper
constructed a permanent observatory beside the castle, appointed professional direc-
tors and published a catalogue of 60,066 stars in 4 volumes between 1851 - 1856.
The last director was Frederick Henkel and the observatory was closed in 1902.

Oil on canvas, 110 x 75cm
Provenance:Rathescar House,Co.Louth
The subject of this portrait has defied identification. He holds a plan of a mantelpiece which approximates to theWilliam Kent design for one at Houghton Hall, but
which was adapted by Edward Lovett Pearse for Dublin Castle and Henrietta Street. Surface cleaning revealed a key and a blue sash, presumably a badge of office.
The style and subject of the portrait suggests an affinity to Francis Bindon.

A 15TH CENTURY CARVED STONE HEAD ATTRIBUTED TO BE
THE HEAD OF CATHERINE DE VALOIS
23cm high, the entire 44cm wide
Provenance:Stackallen Co.Meath.
See Elizabeth Hickey Journal ofThe Royal Society ofAntiquaries.(JRSAIVol. 115, (1985): 140-145)
€ 20,000 - 30,000
During some building work being done near Stackallen in county Meath in the 1970’s, a land-
owner came across a finely carved head of a woman amongst some stone rubble being used for
in-fill. Spurred on by curiosity, contact was made with historian, Elizabeth Hickey who undertook
to investigate the stone head’s history. Her findings were published in the Journal of the Royal
Society ofAntiquaries of Ireland, (JRSAIVol. 115, (1985): 140-145). Hickey claimed that the head
in question was the daughter of the King of France, Catherine deValois, who was married for two
years to England’s HenryV, theVictor atAgincourt.
Catherine’s marriage to Henry had been arranged under the terms of theTreaty ofTroyes in 1420.
In 1421, she gave birth to a son who became the future King HenryVI, the last Lancastrian and
a pious but ineffectual ruler who founded Eton College and King’s College, Cambridge. Her
husband died in 1422. Left to her own devices as a young widow, Catherine fell in love with the
clerk of her wardrobe, OwenTudor, who‘belonged to a barbarous clan of savages’, whom she
married and with whom she had four children. It was through this line that Catherine was to have
her most enduring impact. She was the grandmother of the later HenryVII and great grandmother
of HenryVIII.
This stone head formed part of the decoration of the east window of Stackallen Church, most
likely partnering another similarly sized head. The church itself was demolished in 1960 and some
of its decorative features were removed to nearby Slane Protestant Church.

The medieval Stackallen Church, it is believed, was established by the Dexter family as they may
have owned Stackallen in the late 14th century/early 15th century and are thought to have built a
church on their lands. It was built on the site of an early Christian establishment.

In the summer of 1958, Inspector of National Monuments, OPW architect and antiquarian
Dr. Harold Leask visited Stackallen, making notes and taking photographs of the soon to be
demolished building.According to Hickey he concluded that the Church most likely dated to
the 16th century, was possibly pre-reformation but that it included decorative stones from an
earlier church. One of his photographs shows a 16th century window with a hood moulding and
a crowned head at each stop. Hickey states that the decoration, vine leaf and tendril forms, seen
in the old photograph corresponds closely to the decoration on the head of the Queen Consort.
Overgrown ivy sadly obscures the detail of the actual heads in the photograph.
Hickey described the carving thus :“It is a very beautiful piece of carving, the delicate, almost life-
sized, features of the young woman tapering to the chin, are carved to be looked up at from below.
Her lips bear that elusive smile typical of 15th century portraiture; her hair is fringed and plaited
and on her head she wears a crown of fleur-de-lis. On grounds of style and fashion I would date
this head to the early part of the 15th century and say that it represents a queen. I would suggest
that it came from the medieval church and was re-used when that church was rebuilt early in the
16th century and, with the window, survived the 18th century rebuilding.”
In medieval times churches in the Pale had their Gothic windows adorned with heads, in each case
a king and a queen at the stops of the moulding, and with a bishop at the apex. This seems to have
been a conventional arrangement with the Pale gentry honouring the reigning king of England
from whom they held their lands, and his consort. The date of the marriage of Catherine and
Henry in early 1421 ties in directly with the beginning of the Succession List of the Clergy in 1421
and the generally agreed date of the building of the 15th century Stackallen Church thus seemingly

confirming that the stone head is a portrait of Queen Catherine deValois.

What convinced Hickey that the head may have been that of Catherine deValois was it’s undeniable similarity to a life size painted wood and wax effigy carried at her
funeral, when she was still a young woman, and preserved to this day atWestminsterAbbey. Because her tenure as Queen was so short, less than two years, images
of Catherine are rare.
While the depiction of English royal subjects in Gothic windows within the Pale where loyalty to reigning kings and their consorts is understandable, particularly at
what was a time of vigorous Gaelic resurgence across the rest of the country, the questions of the origin and nationality of the carver remain to be explored.

A CARVED STONE HEAD OF A CLASSICAL YOUTH
28cm high, 17.5cm wide
Provenance:Stackallen Co.Meath.
See Elizabeth Hickey Journal ofThe Royal Society ofAntiquaries. 1985
€ 8,000 - 10,000
In similar fashion to the carved stone head of Catherine ofValois (Lot 67), found amongst rubble after the demolition of Stackallen Church in 1960, the
present lot, a head of a boy, was also intended to be used as in-fill in building work only to be rescued by a landowner in Co. Meath in the early 1970’s.
Historian Elizabeth Hickey, who researched extensively on the Queen Catherine head also addressed the likely history of this piece of carving in her
1985 article‘Two Stone Heads from Stackallan, county Meath’, for the Royal Society ofAntiquaries of Ireland, (JRSAIVol. 115, (1985): 140-145).
She asserts that this life-sized head with curly hair, unadorned by any head covering, is more likely a piece of classical sculpture rather than medieval
and that it probably dates to the early 18th century. On the basis of Dr. Harold Leask’s photograph, seen by Hickey, this head was placed at the apex of
the east window of Stackallan Church. She posits that it was inserted into the east window during the 18th century rebuilding and that it represents the
youngAugustus Hamilton, grandson of the first Lord Boyne and heir to his titles and estates.
Hickey described it thus:“It is also a beautifully carved head, the features those of a young boy with wide-set eyes, a straight nose and the full mouth so
often seen in the portraiture of the period. It seems to represent the likeness of some person rather than be just a set piece. It was carefully protected
by the scalloped hood of stone which indicates care and concern for its preservation beyond the normal in church sculpture.” During the course of her
research, Hickey sought the assistance of the thenViscount Boyne who had, in the family collection, a portrait of the second Lord Boyne painted when
he was a middle aged man.Viscount Boyne remarked that he had a long straight nose and a small chin and so could have been the boy of the stone.

Heading paragraph captioned‘The Editor states this “Jeu d’Espirit” has circulated in manuscript copies through theAmerican army; and is “too good to be con-
fined to the mere circle of his (the author’s) acquaintance” and “that its fame has reached this country”
Howe is praised:
“Well knowing the valour and conduct which lead us/ and how soon we follow, when you are to lead us/Long Island,NewYork and GreatWashington’s Fort.”
The Americans are denigrated:
“Their famed constitiution- their dernier resort”
“Their fring’d rifle warriors, how we did scorn/as a parcel of rags set on posts in the corn!”
“But now we’ve such stocks of them coop’d up in jail/The whole congress money, coud not be their bail.”
Married for 18 months, twelve of them away in the army, his young wife, through stress, lost their child. With the analogy of war he describes to the General how
this will be rectified, if his request for home leave be granted.
“In order to open manly attack-
“When we meet face to face we shall soon come to battle -
“And then I know how to gain full satisfaction
“As the body’s drive back in the heart of the action!
“I’ve a breach and a breast-work,then next to subdue
“With a close cover’d way,and a sap to make too
“All round the deep ditch, there’s chevauz de frize”
“At Flat Bush * there’s not such a cluster of trees-
“I’ve tools to entrench with, and make my approaches-
“I’ll not ask grenadiers or light infantry there

OF TEMPERANCE’ (1790 - 1856)
Three p.s holograph letter signed, from New Orleans 13 February 1851 to Richard Dowden Esq, 160 x 205mm (previously folded)
In reply to Dowden’s which contained “joyful tidings”, comments on circulation of his letters through Miss Jennings, he waxes lyrical
about Miss Lind, to whom he has been introduced. He can’t attend her evening concerts “as it would disedify” but she sang to him her
most admired songs in the Morning Rehersals.“She is more like a large melodious Bird, than a Human Creature”. He thanks Dowden,“For your
untiring advocacy of the Glorious Cause ofTemperance”
Richard Dowden (1794 - 1861), a business man, philanthropist and Mayor of Cork and whilst being a member of the Unitarian congre-
gation he supported O’Connell. He was drawn to Fr. Mathew through his work for the deprived which led to this active involvement
in theTemperance movement. He cleared Fr. Mathews debts of £7,000 in 1884 and continued to raise money for the movement. The
friendship the two men had for each other is apparent in this letter.
Johanna Maria Lind (1820 - 1887) better known as Jenny Lind, orThe Swedish Nightingale. She performed in soprano roles in opera in
Sweden and across Europe, and undertook an extraordinarly popular concert tour of America beginning in 1850.

THOMAS TYNDALL, DUBLIN 1916
NURSE ELIZABETH O’FARRELL
A photograph of Nurse Elizabeth O’Farrell standing dressed in Cumnan na Bman uniform; together
with another photograph of her family, sister, brother and mother (2)
Elizabeth O’Farrell (1884 - 1957) trained and worked as a midwife in Holles Street Maternity
Hospital. In 1906 she joined Inghinidhe na hÉireann (Daughters of Ireland) a radical republican or-
ganisation founded by Maud Gonne, which in 1914 would merge with the newly formed Cumman
na mBan.
As part of the women’s branch of the IrishVolunteers, O’Farrell played an active role in the 1916
Rising. O’Farrell was a dispatcher during the conflict, heading first to Athenry on Easter Monday
before returning and reporting to the GPO for duty. She worked alongside her close friend Julia
Grenan, who between them carried out the difficult and dangerous tasks of delivering food and
ammunition to the various Irish volunteer strong holds around the city and providing medical
attention to the wounded. Unusually, when the other women volunteers along with the injured
were evacuated to a safe house on Moore Street, O’Farrell, Grenan and another female volunteer
Winifred Carney, a suffragette and Irish independence activist, remained in the GPO.
On the realization that they could not hold the GPO for any longer, the remainder of the troops
retreated to the aforementioned safe house. On Saturday 29th April, O’Farrell left Moore Street
armed with a “small white flag” and a red cross on her arm and apron to deliver Pearse’s message to General Lowe. When Lowe insisted on an unconditional surrender,
she delivered the order along with Pearse to Lowe and his son,ADC Lieutenant John Lowe.An amateur photographer serving with the BritishArmy captured this mo-
ment, which took place on Parnell Street between Moore Street and Moore Lane.
There is a fascinating sequence of three photographs (National Museum of Ireland), presented almost as a triptych, which shows the gradual alteration, and eventual
removal of O’Farrell from the famous image of Pearse’s surrender to General Lowe. In the original press photograph her feet and skirts are clearly visible beside Pearse
while he obscures her upper body and face from view. In the next image the expressions of soldiers faces have been changed and by the third, O’Farrell has been expunged
from the image entirely.Allegedly, O’Farrell gave an account of the event in May 1956 to the Cistercian monks of Roscrea explaining that she deliberately hid from the
camera, an act that she subsequently regretted.
However, the notion of O’Farrell as a dispensable figure, permeated by her removal from the image, fails to acknowledge her importance in carrying the note to General
Lowe, making the initial contact, which led to the event in question. O’Farrell subsequently braved the dangerous city streets in order to deliver the instruction to the
other commandants throughout Dublin. An act which seems more in keeping with a 1957 Irish Press report, following her death, which referred to the roles of O’Farrell
and Grenan during the fighting, as “running, the gauntlet of the military snipers”.The notion of being written out of history or simply not included in the accounts of historical
events seems less final than the physical removal from a photographic image. The deliberate interference with an image, captured and immortalised on film as a true and
lasting record, is a remarkable act of denial.
This act, which has been deemed in recent years as,‘historical airbrushing’, is an interesting expression of how women’s roles during the 1916 Rising was visualized in the
decades to come. Immediately following the rising the Catholic Bulletin’s 1917 description of the women’s activities, focused on the less dramatic, or in a sense less piv-
otal, rendering the individual women to the roles of‘assistants’ rather than active participants in the rising. The emphasis was placed on their roles as caregivers, tending
to the needs of the wounded and dying, offering comfort,‘nursing’ in all of its many capacities such that the men could fight on heroically.A position which the Catholic
Church and in turn the Irish society were more comfortable in adopting when it came to the troublesome question of women’s involvement in the planning and execution
of this violent uprising.
This image of Elizabeth O’Farrell in her Cumann na mBan uniform with rifle in tow, is strikingly different from the carefully orchestrated image of female volunteers in
the years following the Rising.Women in the DeValera era of the Free State were‘comely maidens’ at the fireside, not political activists. But in fact this is what O’Farrell
was right up until her death in 1957. She never fulfilled her traditional female role of marrying or having children; instead she continued to work as a midwife while
also being active with Cumman na mBan during the CivilWar and theWar of Independence. She was staunchly apposed to theTreaty and hostile towards the Free State.
O’Farrell and Grenan raised money during and after the CivilWar for the families of anti-Treatyite prisoners, and she remained involved in Republican politics until her
death. It is important to note that similar to her male counterparts, who had fought for an independent Ireland, she was to become increasingly disillusioned with the
reality of the Irish Free State post-1922.A reality, which must have been further compounded by the disadvantage of her gender, as the efforts towards women’s liberation
and the suffragette movement, were largely suppressed in favour of highly conservative and patriarchal society. The image of O’Farrell, which has proliferated our cultural
consciousness, has always been of her in the nurse’s uniform, rather than military dress. This photograph goes some way towards the act of rewriting her and many other
women back into the history of the fight for Irish Independence.

1916 “DEFENCE OF TRINITY COLLEGE”
silver presentation cup awarded to Private Garnet Douglas King, issued byWest & Son, Dublin and bearing the engraved inscription‘’DEFENCE OFT.C.D./ SINN FEIN
REBELLION / EASTER 1916,’’ to one side and name of recipient on the other.
Following the outbreak of fighting on Easter Monday 1916,Trinity college was immediately closed to secure the grounds. The element of surprise could have left the col-
lege in a vulnerable position but the early actions taken by the OfficersTraining Corps (OTC), university employees and handful of students who were on site, ensured the
successful defence of college. The OTC were deployed to the roof with orders to shoot any men not wearing uniforms and so presumed to be rebels.
As most British army personal were caught up with the fighting on mainland Europe and so byWednesday, the military presence on the campus was augmented by the
arrival of soldiers from various regiments who were on leave in the city at the time, as well as some‘Colonial’ soldiers (from South Africa, Canada,Australia and New Zea-
land) and they effectively took over the operations in the college for the remainder of the week. The cup in question was awarded to one of these Colonial soldiers, Private
Garnet Douglas King of the South African Infantry, 4th Regt. He is referred to in a handwritten letter from dated 10 May 1916 from Gerard Fitzgibbon toWilliam Hugh
Blake,“We had five Anzacs, two,or perhaps three,Canadians….Three South Africans, one in a kilt (Pte G.D King)…almost all men on leave or sick furlough in Dublin.”
For the early part of the week, the situation was critical, particularly as the college’s strategic position was of great importance to the British. It commanded the heart of
the city, between two key rebel strongholds the GPO and St Stephen’s Green. By maintaining control of the campus, they impeded communication between those two
points and were able to inflict considerable damage to the IrishVolunteers. For the British the importance of the successful defence of the college and the surrounding
environs, (the Bank of Ireland at College Green was not occupied by the Rebels) can not be underestimated.
After the Rising ended, the Board passed resolution of thanks to those who had assisted in its defence and it was decided to issue Souvenir silver Cups to those who had
participated. On SaturdayAugust 5th in the Provost gardens ofTrinity College, a presentation was held to commemorate the gallant conduct of OTC and soldiers of the
British and Colonial armies. Two large silver presentation cups were presented to Provost Mahaffy and the Commandant of the OTC Captain E.H Alton. Replicas were
awarded to remaining troops, including Private King. In a letter written by King to the Lieutenant of the OTC datedAugust 10th 1916, he askes that silver cup be sent to
his mother Mrs.Annie Marie King in Natal, South Africa as he is leaving for France the following day. There is a further letter dated September 11th 1916, from the Lieu-
tenant to Mrs. King, stating her sons wishes but‘in view of the uncertainty of transit and also the high cost of postage,we propose to retain it here for the present’.This would come
sooner than anticipated when Pte. King was wounded in action and died on April 4th 1917 aged 28.A telegram records his burial in Etaples Military cemetery in Northern
France.

AN 1871 MAUSER CAVALRY CARBINE, ‘HOWTH GUN RUNNING’
single shot, black powder, bolt-action rifle, 11mm cartridge, stamped with registration numbers and factory mark‘GERR MAUSER & CO. OBERNDORFF’, with
additional bayonet lug. 112cm long (stock partially cut)
Provenance: By descent to present owner.
Exhibited:‘Volunteers’ Glasnevin Cemetery Museum (December 2013 - March 2014) as one of the rifles landed aboard the Asgard at Howth in 1914 as part of the
‘Howth Gun Running’.The exhibition marked the foundation of both the IrishVolunteers and the Irish Citizen Army.
Designed by Peter Paul Mauser,it was the first cartridge rifle adopted by the PrussianArmy in 1872.It was a revolutionary design at the time, but by 1914 the GermanArmy
was using the more modern 1898 Mauser Gewehr rifle.Patrick Pearse admitted shortly after the landing that the Mauser was of an‘antiquated pattern, without magazines,
and [was] much inferior to the British service rifle’.Equally the powder cartridge, once fired, would give away the firer’s position in a cloud of white smoke.
On the other hand,Darrel Figgis, who purchased the rifles in Hamburg, described the Mauser as‘ideal for our purpose, cheap and undeniably effective’.
Although technically obsolete, the Mauser was an effective weapon, firing a larger bullet than the British Lee-Enfield.It had ferocious recoil, however,asTomWalsh recalls in his
witness statement recorded in the Bureau of Military History (BMH.WS0198.)
‘In the excitement I did not heed the lectures and did not hold the gun correctly. The result was that [the first time I fired it] the butt hit me under the chin and knocked me out.’
The other disadvantage was the low rate of fire (four or five rounds per minute) as it did not have a magazine.Soldiers in the BritishArmy at the time were trained to fire fifteen
bullets a minute with their Lee-Enfield rifles, which had ten-round magazines.
After numerous failed attempts to purchase arms in France and Belgium,Darrel Figgis and Roger Casement managed to source 1,500 1871 Mauser rifles. They were bought in
Hamburg from Moritz Magnus Jnr.In an unusual turn of events they had to pretend to be Mexicans,as it was forbidden for German companies to sell arms to Britain.Although
the weapons were subsequently used as part of the 1916 rising, the initial consignment was to be used to defend Home Rule, which had been passed lawfully by Parliament.
The weapons were to be taken from Hamburg by tug boat and then met off the Irish coast by two yachts, one of which theAsgard, manned by Erskine Childers and his wife
Molly, was to take the weapons into the fishing village of Howth, around 15km north of Dublin city. The other, the Kelpie, belonging to Conor O’Brien transferred his cargo
to SirThomas Myles in the Chotah off the coast ofWales and this cargo of 600 rifles was landed under cover of darkness on 1stAugust at Kilcoole, about 25 kilometres south
of Dublin. IrishVolunteer and Fianna were the only two organizations involved in the Howth Gun Running, the Irish CitizenArmy were not privy to any plans. They met the
Asgard at Howth and successfully unloaded the entire consignment.Unchallenged by the Dublin Metropolitan Police a battalion of troops – the Scottish Borderers were called
out.Theywereorderedtoseizethecrowd,ameleebrokeoutandintheconfusionthegroupdispersed,returninginsmallerfactionstovariouscompanyheadquartersinthecity.
Tragedy struck later when the Scottish Borders returned to the city to be met by a crowd of nationalist’s supporters who jeered them as they marched to Richmond Barracks
along the quays. They opened fire on the crowd killing three and injuring thirty-seven.

A SILVER SNUFF BOX PREVIOUSLY THE
PROPERTY OF TOM CLARKE, BIRMINGHAM 1903,
mark of Joseph Cook & Son, of rectangular form with integral hinged lid, decorated with an inlaid Connemara marble harp in a bed of chased and engraved
shamrocks and enclosed within a gadrooned border, the inside of the lid inscribed:“From Hannah Clarke to Michael O’C.Maguire, the Property ofTom Clarke First
President Irish Republic 1916”. 4.5 x 3cm
When the Proclamation of the Irish Republic was signed on 18 April 1916,Thomas Clarke (1857-1916) was given the honour of being the first signatory. It has
been said that Clarke would have been the declared president but he refused any military rank and such honours.
Born in England,Tom Clarke grew up in Dungannon, CoTyrone, where he qualified as an assistant teacher. However he was horrified by the poverty, injustice
and desolation which he saw all around him and joined the Irish Republican Brotherhood in 1879.After joining, he spent time in NewYork where he trained
in using explosives. He was sent to England on a dynamite campaign but was arrested shortly afterwards and spent fifteen years in prison there. After being re-
leased in 1898 he returned to Dublin where he was reunited with his mother, and sister Hannah. Shortly afterwards he met and fell in love with Kathleen, niece
of his close friend John Daly. The couple were married and spent some time in NewYork before returning to Dublin whereTom set up a tobacconist’s shop.
Letters fromTom Clarke to his wife Kathleen in the collection of the National Library of Ireland show thatTom’s sister Hannah was heavily involved in the
setting up of the shop and assisted him in the process of organising suppliers. Over the next few years, this shop would become an important base from which
Clarke would revive the IRB, recruiting new members and subsequently founding the IrishVolunteers in 1914. He was instrumental in the success of the move-
ment and it was he who identified PH Pearse and facilitated his success as a public speaker.
When Clarke’s name was read first on the Proclamation on 24 April 1916, he was standing next to Pearse on the steps of the headquarters of the GPO and is
said to have been moved by this tribute. It was an acknowledgement of the central role he played in bringing the Rising to fruition.
Tom Clarke was executed at dawn on May 3, 1916, with Patrick Pearse andThomas MacDonagh.

MACSWINEY, TERENCE.
An Original Photograph ofTerence MacSwiney, his wife Muriel and daughter Máire
aged perhaps 9-12 months, probablyApril or May 1919, in studio’s folded card,
inscribed on verso “For Lola!Terry,/ Muriel,/ Máire.” Loosely inserted is a Happy Feast
Day card inscribed “and birthday / with love from / M.”
A most attractive photograph, apparently unpublished. Photographs showing
MacSwiney with his family are very rare. He was in jail when his daughter was born
in June 1918, and was released on humanitarian grounds only in March 1919, to sup-
port Muriel through a severe attack of influenza. Probably this photograph was taken
as soon as she was well enough to be up and about. After his release MacSwiney spent
much of his time travelling onVolunteer business and to collect money for the Dáil
Loan; for security reasons he rarely slept at home, and Muriel told friends she hardly
ever saw him.Terence MacSwiney, Lord Mayor of Cork and Officer Commanding
Cork No. 1 Brigade I.R.A. died in 1920 on the 74th day of hunger strike in protest at
his imprisonment by the BritishAuthorities. He was a full-time organiser for the Irish
Volunteers and a close friend of Michael Collins. His long martyrdom was a turning
point in the struggle for independence.

DUNNAGE (BRITISH, 19TH CENTURY) The Paddle steamerThames crossing the Channel Oil on canvas, 55 x 83cm Signed and dated‘W. Dunnage, 1831’ € 18,000 - 22,000 The SSThames, formerly theArgyle, has been marked in theAnglo-Irish maritime annals as a pioneering steamship, known as the first cross-channel steamer in the world. Though it is widely accepted amongst historians that theArgyle inaugurated the London-Dublin route, the details around the event are somewhat disputed.A number of accounts claim that the steamer departed from London and made the journey to Dublin in 1816. However this somewhat contradicts another more detailed account of the passage. This version of events is cited by maritime historian Nick Robins in his book,‘The ShipsThat Came to the Pool of London’ - it is reported that the vessel travelled from Dublin to London in 1815 on her delivery voyage from the Clyde to new owners in London and that there were two passengers on board the ship - IsaacWeld, Secretary of the Royal Dublin Society and his wife. It was in London that theArgyle was renamedThames, and put to work on a route between London and Margate. Irrespective of the specifics of the first voyage itself,Thames is widely credited with paving the way for the establishment of a regular service between Dublin and London by the Dublin & London Steam Package Company; a route which was worked in its early years by a paddler named the Shannon, as well as the Thames. This route remained in place for 150 years, with only periodical interruptions during the First and SecondWorldWars.TheThames was wrecked off the Isles of Scilly in 1841 and sixty men were drowned. In‘ATopographical and Historical Guide to the Isle ofWight’, written in 1833,William Donnan is listed as Captain of SSThames. The presentation salver awarded to him in by the Dublin & London Steam Package Company indicates the high regard in which he was held within the organisation. The second part of this lot is a painting of the‘SSThames’ at sea, signed and dated‘W. Dunnage, 1831’. Little is known about this artist, aside from his limited oeuvre of British nautical paintings. The uniqueness of the name‘Dunnage’ and the coincidental link of its meaning (dunnage was commonly known as baggage being brought onto a ship) with the theme in which the artist painted implies that there is a possibility that this artist worked under the guise of a pseudonym.

  • 35. 35 The History Sale 50 IRISH SCHOOL (19TH CENTURY) A view of the Casino at Marino, set within formal planting, woods beyond, Watercolour, 170 x 255cm later inscribed in pencil verso,“Temple at Marino,Lord Charlemont’s seat Clontarf, near Dublin, from Miss M.J Durhams’s papers 1865” Whilst the Casino is often depicted in the 18th century it is surprising how sparse is the record of what it looked like in the 19th. In fact the 2nd Earl was an excellent custodian of his fathers legacy until his death in 1863.The 3rd Earl was a lesser figure who sold the Dublin properties and altered the family’s house in countyTyrone into a ludicrous pseudo-chateau.The casino, the finest neo-classical building in Ireland was left to its fate by unsympathetic barbarians and its restoration, admittedly in a woefully degraded landscape, is a modern miracle. € 1,000 - 1,500

It is a very valuable and objec- tive study of the social conditions prevailing at a precise date in County Mayo. € 1,000 - 1,500 52 THE LEAP The seat ofAdmiral Sir Henry D. J Cooper, Esq. M.P, Diameter of the Object Glass 14 inches, Full length 25 feet” byW. Eldridge, lithographer and printed by Eagleman & Co., 280 x 360mm Maria Edgeworth records in her letters (ed. Pakenham 2018) that in the summer of 1835 scientists descended on Dublin and then proceeded to Markee to inspect the worlds most powerful achromatic telescope made byThomas Grubb, some ten years previous to the famous Birr telescope. She mentions Professor Rowan Hamilton and Sir John and Lady Franklin (of Artic fame). This rare, apparently unrecorded litho- graph, was probably produced to commemorate the event. • 44. 44 Tuesday 24th April 67 A 15TH CENTURY CARVED STONE HEAD ATTRIBUTED TO BE THE HEAD OF CATHERINE DE VALOIS 23cm high, the entire 44cm wide Provenance:Stackallen Co.Meath. See Elizabeth Hickey Journal ofThe Royal Society ofAntiquaries.(JRSAIVol. 115, (1985): 140-145) € 20,000 - 30,000 During some building work being done near Stackallen in county Meath in the 1970’s, a land- owner came across a finely carved head of a woman amongst some stone rubble being used for in-fill. Spurred on by curiosity, contact was made with historian, Elizabeth Hickey who undertook to investigate the stone head’s history. Her findings were published in the Journal of the Royal Society ofAntiquaries of Ireland, (JRSAIVol. 115, (1985): 140-145). Hickey claimed that the head in question was the daughter of the King of France, Catherine deValois, who was married for two years to England’s HenryV, theVictor atAgincourt. Catherine’s marriage to Henry had been arranged under the terms of theTreaty ofTroyes in 1420. In 1421, she gave birth to a son who became the future King HenryVI, the last Lancastrian and a pious but ineffectual ruler who founded Eton College and King’s College, Cambridge. Her husband died in 1422. Left to her own devices as a young widow, Catherine fell in love with the clerk of her wardrobe, OwenTudor, who‘belonged to a barbarous clan of savages’, whom she married and with whom she had four children. It was through this line that Catherine was to have her most enduring impact. She was the grandmother of the later HenryVII and great grandmother of HenryVIII. This stone head formed part of the decoration of the east window of Stackallen Church, most likely partnering another similarly sized head. The church itself was demolished in 1960 and some of its decorative features were removed to nearby Slane Protestant Church.   The medieval Stackallen Church, it is believed, was established by the Dexter family as they may have owned Stackallen in the late 14th century/early 15th century and are thought to have built a church on their lands. It was built on the site of an early Christian establishment.   In the summer of 1958, Inspector of National Monuments, OPW architect and antiquarian Dr. Harold Leask visited Stackallen, making notes and taking photographs of the soon to be demolished building.According to Hickey he concluded that the Church most likely dated to the 16th century, was possibly pre-reformation but that it included decorative stones from an earlier church. One of his photographs shows a 16th century window with a hood moulding and a crowned head at each stop. Hickey states that the decoration, vine leaf and tendril forms, seen in the old photograph corresponds closely to the decoration on the head of the Queen Consort. Overgrown ivy sadly obscures the detail of the actual heads in the photograph. Hickey described the carving thus :“It is a very beautiful piece of carving, the delicate, almost life- sized, features of the young woman tapering to the chin, are carved to be looked up at from below. Her lips bear that elusive smile typical of 15th century portraiture; her hair is fringed and plaited and on her head she wears a crown of fleur-de-lis. On grounds of style and fashion I would date this head to the early part of the 15th century and say that it represents a queen. I would suggest that it came from the medieval church and was re-used when that church was rebuilt early in the 16th century and, with the window, survived the 18th century rebuilding.” In medieval times churches in the Pale had their Gothic windows adorned with heads, in each case a king and a queen at the stops of the moulding, and with a bishop at the apex. This seems to have been a conventional arrangement with the Pale gentry honouring the reigning king of England from whom they held their lands, and his consort. The date of the marriage of Catherine and Henry in early 1421 ties in directly with the beginning of the Succession List of the Clergy in 1421 and the generally agreed date of the building of the 15th century Stackallen Church thus seemingly
  • 45. 45 The History Sale confirming that the stone head is a portrait of Queen Catherine deValois.   What convinced Hickey that the head may have been that of Catherine deValois was it’s undeniable similarity to a life size painted wood and wax effigy carried at her funeral, when she was still a young woman, and preserved to this day atWestminsterAbbey. Because her tenure as Queen was so short, less than two years, images of Catherine are rare. While the depiction of English royal subjects in Gothic windows within the Pale where loyalty to reigning kings and their consorts is understandable, particularly at what was a time of vigorous Gaelic resurgence across the rest of the country, the questions of the origin and nationality of the carver remain to be explored.
  • 46. 46 Tuesday 24th April 68 A CARVED STONE HEAD OF A CLASSICAL YOUTH 28cm high, 17.5cm wide Provenance:Stackallen Co.Meath. See Elizabeth Hickey Journal ofThe Royal Society ofAntiquaries. 1985 € 8,000 - 10,000 In similar fashion to the carved stone head of Catherine ofValois (Lot 67), found amongst rubble after the demolition of Stackallen Church in 1960, the present lot, a head of a boy, was also intended to be used as in-fill in building work only to be rescued by a landowner in Co. Meath in the early 1970’s. Historian Elizabeth Hickey, who researched extensively on the Queen Catherine head also addressed the likely history of this piece of carving in her 1985 article‘Two Stone Heads from Stackallan, county Meath’, for the Royal Society ofAntiquaries of Ireland, (JRSAIVol. 115, (1985): 140-145). She asserts that this life-sized head with curly hair, unadorned by any head covering, is more likely a piece of classical sculpture rather than medieval and that it probably dates to the early 18th century. On the basis of Dr. Harold Leask’s photograph, seen by Hickey, this head was placed at the apex of the east window of Stackallan Church. She posits that it was inserted into the east window during the 18th century rebuilding and that it represents the youngAugustus Hamilton, grandson of the first Lord Boyne and heir to his titles and estates. Hickey described it thus:“It is also a beautifully carved head, the features those of a young boy with wide-set eyes, a straight nose and the full mouth so often seen in the portraiture of the period. It seems to represent the likeness of some person rather than be just a set piece. It was carefully protected by the scalloped hood of stone which indicates care and concern for its preservation beyond the normal in church sculpture.” During the course of her research, Hickey sought the assistance of the thenViscount Boyne who had, in the family collection, a portrait of the second Lord Boyne painted when he was a middle aged man.Viscount Boyne remarked that he had a long straight nose and a small chin and so could have been the boy of the stone.

  • 69. 69 The History Sale 120 THOMAS TYNDALL, DUBLIN 1916 NURSE ELIZABETH O’FARRELL A photograph of Nurse Elizabeth O’Farrell standing dressed in Cumnan na Bman uniform; together with another photograph of her family, sister, brother and mother (2) Elizabeth O’Farrell (1884 - 1957) trained and worked as a midwife in Holles Street Maternity Hospital. In 1906 she joined Inghinidhe na hÉireann (Daughters of Ireland) a radical republican or- ganisation founded by Maud Gonne, which in 1914 would merge with the newly formed Cumman na mBan. As part of the women’s branch of the IrishVolunteers, O’Farrell played an active role in the 1916 Rising. O’Farrell was a dispatcher during the conflict, heading first to Athenry on Easter Monday before returning and reporting to the GPO for duty. She worked alongside her close friend Julia Grenan, who between them carried out the difficult and dangerous tasks of delivering food and ammunition to the various Irish volunteer strong holds around the city and providing medical attention to the wounded. Unusually, when the other women volunteers along with the injured were evacuated to a safe house on Moore Street, O’Farrell, Grenan and another female volunteer Winifred Carney, a suffragette and Irish independence activist, remained in the GPO. On the realization that they could not hold the GPO for any longer, the remainder of the troops retreated to the aforementioned safe house. On Saturday 29th April, O’Farrell left Moore Street armed with a “small white flag” and a red cross on her arm and apron to deliver Pearse’s message to General Lowe. When Lowe insisted on an unconditional surrender, she delivered the order along with Pearse to Lowe and his son,ADC Lieutenant John Lowe.An amateur photographer serving with the BritishArmy captured this mo- ment, which took place on Parnell Street between Moore Street and Moore Lane. There is a fascinating sequence of three photographs (National Museum of Ireland), presented almost as a triptych, which shows the gradual alteration, and eventual removal of O’Farrell from the famous image of Pearse’s surrender to General Lowe. In the original press photograph her feet and skirts are clearly visible beside Pearse while he obscures her upper body and face from view. In the next image the expressions of soldiers faces have been changed and by the third, O’Farrell has been expunged from the image entirely.Allegedly, O’Farrell gave an account of the event in May 1956 to the Cistercian monks of Roscrea explaining that she deliberately hid from the camera, an act that she subsequently regretted. However, the notion of O’Farrell as a dispensable figure, permeated by her removal from the image, fails to acknowledge her importance in carrying the note to General Lowe, making the initial contact, which led to the event in question. O’Farrell subsequently braved the dangerous city streets in order to deliver the instruction to the other commandants throughout Dublin. An act which seems more in keeping with a 1957 Irish Press report, following her death, which referred to the roles of O’Farrell and Grenan during the fighting, as “running, the gauntlet of the military snipers”.The notion of being written out of history or simply not included in the accounts of historical events seems less final than the physical removal from a photographic image. The deliberate interference with an image, captured and immortalised on film as a true and lasting record, is a remarkable act of denial. This act, which has been deemed in recent years as,‘historical airbrushing’, is an interesting expression of how women’s roles during the 1916 Rising was visualized in the decades to come. Immediately following the rising the Catholic Bulletin’s 1917 description of the women’s activities, focused on the less dramatic, or in a sense less piv- otal, rendering the individual women to the roles of‘assistants’ rather than active participants in the rising. The emphasis was placed on their roles as caregivers, tending to the needs of the wounded and dying, offering comfort,‘nursing’ in all of its many capacities such that the men could fight on heroically.A position which the Catholic Church and in turn the Irish society were more comfortable in adopting when it came to the troublesome question of women’s involvement in the planning and execution of this violent uprising. This image of Elizabeth O’Farrell in her Cumann na mBan uniform with rifle in tow, is strikingly different from the carefully orchestrated image of female volunteers in the years following the Rising.Women in the DeValera era of the Free State were‘comely maidens’ at the fireside, not political activists. But in fact this is what O’Farrell was right up until her death in 1957. She never fulfilled her traditional female role of marrying or having children; instead she continued to work as a midwife while also being active with Cumman na mBan during the CivilWar and theWar of Independence. She was staunchly apposed to theTreaty and hostile towards the Free State. O’Farrell and Grenan raised money during and after the CivilWar for the families of anti-Treatyite prisoners, and she remained involved in Republican politics until her death. It is important to note that similar to her male counterparts, who had fought for an independent Ireland, she was to become increasingly disillusioned with the reality of the Irish Free State post-1922.A reality, which must have been further compounded by the disadvantage of her gender, as the efforts towards women’s liberation and the suffragette movement, were largely suppressed in favour of highly conservative and patriarchal society. The image of O’Farrell, which has proliferated our cultural consciousness, has always been of her in the nurse’s uniform, rather than military dress. This photograph goes some way towards the act of rewriting her and many other women back into the history of the fight for Irish Independence. € 3,000 - 5,000

  • 74. 74 Tuesday 24th April 126 1916 “DEFENCE OF TRINITY COLLEGE” silver presentation cup awarded to Private Garnet Douglas King, issued byWest & Son, Dublin and bearing the engraved inscription‘’DEFENCE OFT.C.D./ SINN FEIN REBELLION / EASTER 1916,’’ to one side and name of recipient on the other. Following the outbreak of fighting on Easter Monday 1916,Trinity college was immediately closed to secure the grounds. The element of surprise could have left the col- lege in a vulnerable position but the early actions taken by the OfficersTraining Corps (OTC), university employees and handful of students who were on site, ensured the successful defence of college. The OTC were deployed to the roof with orders to shoot any men not wearing uniforms and so presumed to be rebels. As most British army personal were caught up with the fighting on mainland Europe and so byWednesday, the military presence on the campus was augmented by the arrival of soldiers from various regiments who were on leave in the city at the time, as well as some‘Colonial’ soldiers (from South Africa, Canada,Australia and New Zea- land) and they effectively took over the operations in the college for the remainder of the week. The cup in question was awarded to one of these Colonial soldiers, Private Garnet Douglas King of the South African Infantry, 4th Regt. He is referred to in a handwritten letter from dated 10 May 1916 from Gerard Fitzgibbon toWilliam Hugh Blake,“We had five Anzacs, two,or perhaps three,Canadians….Three South Africans, one in a kilt (Pte G.D King)…almost all men on leave or sick furlough in Dublin.” For the early part of the week, the situation was critical, particularly as the college’s strategic position was of great importance to the British. It commanded the heart of the city, between two key rebel strongholds the GPO and St Stephen’s Green. By maintaining control of the campus, they impeded communication between those two points and were able to inflict considerable damage to the IrishVolunteers. For the British the importance of the successful defence of the college and the surrounding environs, (the Bank of Ireland at College Green was not occupied by the Rebels) can not be underestimated. After the Rising ended, the Board passed resolution of thanks to those who had assisted in its defence and it was decided to issue Souvenir silver Cups to those who had participated. On SaturdayAugust 5th in the Provost gardens ofTrinity College, a presentation was held to commemorate the gallant conduct of OTC and soldiers of the British and Colonial armies. Two large silver presentation cups were presented to Provost Mahaffy and the Commandant of the OTC Captain E.H Alton. Replicas were awarded to remaining troops, including Private King. In a letter written by King to the Lieutenant of the OTC datedAugust 10th 1916, he askes that silver cup be sent to his mother Mrs.Annie Marie King in Natal, South Africa as he is leaving for France the following day. There is a further letter dated September 11th 1916, from the Lieu- tenant to Mrs. King, stating her sons wishes but‘in view of the uncertainty of transit and also the high cost of postage,we propose to retain it here for the present’.This would come sooner than anticipated when Pte. King was wounded in action and died on April 4th 1917 aged 28.A telegram records his burial in Etaples Military cemetery in Northern France. € 2,000 - 3,000

  • 76. 76 Tuesday 24th April 130 AN 1871 MAUSER CAVALRY CARBINE, ‘HOWTH GUN RUNNING’ single shot, black powder, bolt-action rifle, 11mm cartridge, stamped with registration numbers and factory mark‘GERR MAUSER & CO. OBERNDORFF’, with additional bayonet lug. 112cm long (stock partially cut) Provenance: By descent to present owner. Exhibited:‘Volunteers’ Glasnevin Cemetery Museum (December 2013 - March 2014) as one of the rifles landed aboard the Asgard at Howth in 1914 as part of the ‘Howth Gun Running’.The exhibition marked the foundation of both the IrishVolunteers and the Irish Citizen Army. Designed by Peter Paul Mauser,it was the first cartridge rifle adopted by the PrussianArmy in 1872.It was a revolutionary design at the time, but by 1914 the GermanArmy was using the more modern 1898 Mauser Gewehr rifle.Patrick Pearse admitted shortly after the landing that the Mauser was of an‘antiquated pattern, without magazines, and [was] much inferior to the British service rifle’.Equally the powder cartridge, once fired, would give away the firer’s position in a cloud of white smoke. On the other hand,Darrel Figgis, who purchased the rifles in Hamburg, described the Mauser as‘ideal for our purpose, cheap and undeniably effective’. Although technically obsolete, the Mauser was an effective weapon, firing a larger bullet than the British Lee-Enfield.It had ferocious recoil, however,asTomWalsh recalls in his witness statement recorded in the Bureau of Military History (BMH.WS0198.) ‘In the excitement I did not heed the lectures and did not hold the gun correctly. The result was that [the first time I fired it] the butt hit me under the chin and knocked me out.’ The other disadvantage was the low rate of fire (four or five rounds per minute) as it did not have a magazine.Soldiers in the BritishArmy at the time were trained to fire fifteen bullets a minute with their Lee-Enfield rifles, which had ten-round magazines. After numerous failed attempts to purchase arms in France and Belgium,Darrel Figgis and Roger Casement managed to source 1,500 1871 Mauser rifles. They were bought in Hamburg from Moritz Magnus Jnr.In an unusual turn of events they had to pretend to be Mexicans,as it was forbidden for German companies to sell arms to Britain.Although the weapons were subsequently used as part of the 1916 rising, the initial consignment was to be used to defend Home Rule, which had been passed lawfully by Parliament. The weapons were to be taken from Hamburg by tug boat and then met off the Irish coast by two yachts, one of which theAsgard, manned by Erskine Childers and his wife Molly, was to take the weapons into the fishing village of Howth, around 15km north of Dublin city. The other, the Kelpie, belonging to Conor O’Brien transferred his cargo to SirThomas Myles in the Chotah off the coast ofWales and this cargo of 600 rifles was landed under cover of darkness on 1stAugust at Kilcoole, about 25 kilometres south of Dublin. IrishVolunteer and Fianna were the only two organizations involved in the Howth Gun Running, the Irish CitizenArmy were not privy to any plans. They met the Asgard at Howth and successfully unloaded the entire consignment.Unchallenged by the Dublin Metropolitan Police a battalion of troops – the Scottish Borderers were called out.Theywereorderedtoseizethecrowd,ameleebrokeoutandintheconfusionthegroupdispersed,returninginsmallerfactionstovariouscompanyheadquartersinthecity. It has been said that Clarke would have been the declared president but he refused any military rank and such honours. Born in England,Tom Clarke grew up in Dungannon, CoTyrone, where he qualified as an assistant teacher. However he was horrified by the poverty, injustice and desolation which he saw all around him and joined the Irish Republican Brotherhood in 1879.After joining, he spent time in NewYork where he trained in using explosives. He was sent to England on a dynamite campaign but was arrested shortly afterwards and spent fifteen years in prison there. After being re- leased in 1898 he returned to Dublin where he was reunited with his mother, and sister Hannah. Shortly afterwards he met and fell in love with Kathleen, niece of his close friend John Daly. The couple were married and spent some time in NewYork before returning to Dublin whereTom set up a tobacconist’s shop. Letters fromTom Clarke to his wife Kathleen in the collection of the National Library of Ireland show thatTom’s sister Hannah was heavily involved in the setting up of the shop and assisted him in the process of organising suppliers. Over the next few years, this shop would become an important base from which Clarke would revive the IRB, recruiting new members and subsequently founding the IrishVolunteers in 1914. He was instrumental in the success of the move- ment and it was he who identified PH Pearse and facilitated his success as a public speaker. When Clarke’s name was read first on the Proclamation on 24 April 1916, he was standing next to Pearse on the steps of the headquarters of the GPO and is said to have been moved by this tribute. He was in jail when his daughter was born in June 1918, and was released on humanitarian grounds only in March 1919, to sup- port Muriel through a severe attack of influenza. Probably this photograph was taken as soon as she was well enough to be up and about. After his release MacSwiney spent much of his time travelling onVolunteer business and to collect money for the Dáil Loan; for security reasons he rarely slept at home, and Muriel told friends she hardly ever saw him.Terence MacSwiney, Lord Mayor of Cork and Officer Commanding Cork No. 1 Brigade I.R.A. died in 1920 on the 74th day of hunger strike in protest at his imprisonment by the BritishAuthorities. He was a full-time organiser for the Irish Volunteers and a close friend of Michael Collins. His long martyrdom was a turning point in the struggle for independence. € 350 - 450
