VIEWING AT SLANE CASTLE, CO MEATH
For the 6th annual sale at Slane Castle of things from country houses Adams are pleased to present this eclectic offering, much with interesting provenance.
Although few houses retain their original contents intact (and what auctioneer could sleep soundly at the thought of such?) it was always thus, as families have inherited, accumulated, acquired, given away, sold, replaced or lost their possessions. “Collections”, an awkward word for that which fills a house by choice or chance, now seem to be formed and dispersed quicker than before and perhaps the peculiar patina acquired by portraits of supposed or real ancestors, gathering dust or arrow holes caused by bored children, is not as apparent. Certainly there seems to be less of fossilised dog turd, dead bats and skeletal birds to frighten the wary valuer away from the attics and basements of damp country houses.
More from these houses has survived, contrary to the popular narrative of destruction, than was perhaps as- sumed. Most silver was sent into bank safety during the troubles and the amount of Irish Georgian silver extant is consequently large. Worse was the fashion of applying to existing pieces the dreaded “later” decoration. Much furniture and painting of course, was dispersed and the Irishness thereof discounted until the heroic work of the Knight of Glin redressed the balance. With this awakened appreciation of the achievements of indigenous crafts- men, painters and builders many houses that would have been lost to a jaundiced interpretation of heritage are now wonderfully restored and full of good things again.
Officialdom has followed, perhaps not always on a logical path but so much has been done that only one or two generations ago would never have been. Budgets to acquire items of national importance are tight but one would hope that the scagliola table, a homage to Maria Edgeworth whose writing laid a foundation for defining the Irish character will find a suitable home (Lot 744) and one can but admire the skill of Arthur Jones’ 1851 exhibition piece (Lot 629), or imagine the goodness of the Quaker Unthank and his Limerick jug (Lot 546) or dream of the wealth that ‘The Black Stuff ’ gave to the Guinness family (Lot 708 (bust)).

Here be cruel soldiers, stern statesmen, serious women, young girls, people who with their possessions, passed
their time in this country. That Irish history is far from gloomy (as history books insist) is encapsulated by Mac-
Donald’s happy picnickers listening to the receding echoes at The Eagle’s Nest, after a very decent lunch (Lot 768)
Enjoy!

49 STUDIO OF SAMUEL DIXON (D.1769)
A Flower Piece
Gouache, 41 x 30cm
Inscribed indistinctly verso
Samuel Dixon (fl. 1748-69) is perhaps best known for his
naturalistic pictures of fruit, flowers and birds executed in his
signature basso relievo technique. His highly decorative designs
did not display any great scientific understanding of his subjects
but nonetheless they were and continue to be highly prized. This
work displays strong influence of the great Dutch and French
artists of the day and the particular technique of using a black
background.
Dixon’s flower pieces soon became the most sought after decorative
items in 18th Century Dublin, so much so that he had to employ
assistants to hand colour the reliefs. Artists such as James Riley,
Daniel O’ Keeffe and Gustavus Hamilton were perhaps the best of
his assistants. The present work is similar in subject and quality to
numerous examples by these artists (see Adam’s sale of Important
Irish Art 2/4/08, Lot 28 and 1/4/09 Lot 122 for similar signed
examples) and a Flower Painting with Lily of the Valley by O’Keeffe
(Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge) has striking similarities. The
florid inscription in watercolour on the reverse is illegible but
similar to signatures on the previously sold examples.
€1500 - 2000

The following nine lots, lots 114-122 relate to the Ashmead Bartlett Family
Sir Ellis Ashmead Bartlett (1849-1902) was born in New York, the son of Ellis Bartlett and Sophia Ashmead.
The family claimed to have been descended from Richard Warren of Hertford, England, one of the passengers on
the Mayflower. Family folklore also links them to Dr. Josiah Bartlett (1729-1795) one of New Hampshire’s three
signatories of the Declaration of Independence. Interestingly ‘Ellis’ is the name of a river in New Hampshire, -
Bartlett country.
After the death of his father in 1852 Ellis and his family moved to England. He graduated in Law and History from
Oxford in 1871 and was called to the Bar in 1877. In 1880 he was elected as MP for Eye in Suffolk and remained a
Member of Parliament until his death in 1902. His eldest son Ellis, born in 1881 became a British war correspond-ent
during the First World War. Through his reporting of the Battle of Gallipoli, he was instrumental in the birth
of the Anzac legend which still dominates military history in Australia and New Zealand. He was intensely critical
of the campaign and described the final offensive as “the most ghastly and costly fiasco in our history since the
Battle of Bannockburn.” Through his outspoken criticism of the conduct of the campaign, he was instrumental
in bringing about the dismissal of the British commander-in-chief, Sir Ian Hamilton — an event that led to the
evacuation of British forces from the Gallipoli peninsula.

185 After JOSEPH HAVERTY RHA (1794-1864)
The Triumphant Entry of George IV into Dublin.
His Majesty’s Arrival, His Majesty’s Embarkation
A pair of coloured aquatints by Robert Havell, each
39 x 60cm.
These prints record the visit of George IV to Ireland in 1821, official business was overshadowed by the King’s wish to visit Slane Castle. These
are rare first state prints before the flags were re-engraved to fly at half mast for the death of Queen Caroline.
This pair of aquatint prints by Robert Havell, are based on paintings by Joseph Haverty, a close friend of ‘The Liberator’, Daniel O’Connell.
Haverty based his depictions on sketches made by John Lushington Reilly, whom Haverty has thoughtfully included in the embarkation
scene. The figure of Reilly can be found in the central foreground sketching on horseback. The 18 day visit by George IV began on August 12th
1820, the Kings 59th birthday, and a mere three weeks after his coronation. The visit was arguably the first time a British monarch had visited
the countr without an accompanying army, in the traditional sense at least.
George IV’s visit was universally greeted with rejoicing from the populace. One of the first to extend his warmest welcome was Daniel
O’Connell, who saw the visit as welcome support in his endeavours to achieve Catholic Emancipation, although George only signed the bill
reluctantly some eight years later. The King, whilst scheduled to arrive at Kingstown (Dun Laoghaire), instead arrived at Howth harbour in
a mood befitting his birthday celebrations. The first print shows the King leading a procession of some two hundred carriages at the head of
Sackville Street amidst a spectacular flurry of flags and pageantry. The Lord Mayor’s Guard, who resembled ‘Beefeaters’, can be seen close to
the carriage. The King spent the majority of his stay at the Vice Regal Lodge in the Phoenix Park, with the exception of a four day visit to his
mistress, Elizabeth Lady Conyngham at Slane Castle.
The visit was a resounding success - Daniel O’Connell even suggesting that a collection be taken up from every peasant in Ireland, to facilitate
the building of a palace for the new King. The collection did not afford the building of a palace but it did facilitate the building of a new bridge
crossing the Liffey at the present location of Heuston Station i.e. King’s Bridge.
