Evaluation Q1: in what ways does you media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Comparing Front covers Puff Masthead Cover lines Artist name Barcode and magazine website
When you compare the front cover of my music magazine to existing magazines such as XXL you can see that both magazines do not have many cover lines, this makes sure that the readers focus more on the main image then reading the cover lines. The posing of my main artist conforms to the main ideology of most Grime and R&B magazines for example the magazine vibe where Akon is topless , this will also attract a female audience. My artist is not wearing many jewellery or has any tattoos which does not conform to the grime and R&B ideology but he does have the basic chain, hat, watch and belt like the artist in vibe. The magazine XXL of jay-z you can not see his eyes, I have done the same to my main artist, by making sure the light is at a certain angle so the hat makes a shadow just on his eyes, this makes him look mysterious but because he is a known artist people will know who he is, this can also suggest the character of the artist as being mysterious. Like both the magazines the masthead is simple but effective the typography of the masthead is big and bold so it stands out, my masthead was inspired by the magazine XXL because it was also simple like mine but it still stood out . Like the magazine XXL my artist is in front of the masthead which could connotes that it is a well known magazine. Also the artists name is bigger then the other cover lines so that it will draw the attention of the audience. The two magazines vibe and XXL was my inspiration when I was creating my front cover of my magazine.
Comparing Contents pages Word contents Front cover Image Sub-headings/page numbers
My contents page was not very similar to other existing music magazines, I had decided to come up with a layout by my self. I have added the pictures to show the readers which big celebrities will be featured the most in my magazine but I have made ‘Bossmans’ picture bigger then the others to show that he is the main feature and so the readers will see that picture first. Like my front cover my contents page has a consistence colour theme throughout, this makes my magazine look more professional. I have only put the important features of my magazine as sub-headings on my contents page, I have also made it easy for my readers to access the main features by adding the page numbers at the beginning of the sub-headings, existing magazines also does this technique for the same reason. I have added the word contents on my contents page but split the word up into two, I got this idea from the magazine vibe as on their contents page the word contents was split into three, also like the magazine vibes contents page I have added a picture of my front cover.
Comparing Double page spreads My double page spread was done in the form of questions and answers from my main artist, this is effective because the readers can see what the artist actually think and feel, also some of the questions can be, questions that the magazine readers also want to hear the answer to. I have also added floating quotes so that the readers will be interested in reading the article, I have made them bigger and in another colour so it stands out more. I have added two images, one of the images goes with the article as we are talking about his girlfriend and the readers might want to see how they look like with each other. I have kept the heading of the page simple by just putting the artists name big and bold, also I have added important information in black blocks so that it stands out and the readers will not miss it. The double spread page also has the colours white, black and red throughout which keeps in which the theme of the magazine. I did not look at any other existing magazines for the layout of my magazine, but as I looked at other magazines I saw that some of them had a question and answer from and I believed that it was simpler for readers to understand.
