These were the slides used in the Safari Webcast held 12_15_08 from Tokyo. These are *not* meant to be stand alone slides, but many people were asking for the PDF, so here you go. This is the actual PDF I used. Here, however, some of the type colors may be off (though it worked well when uploaded; colors were correct). It is 240 slides because I used a PDF and therefore more slides are used to simulate animation. The PDF was 30 MB uploaded here. There were lagging issues during the webex webcast though I was not aware of them. The archive is better though there are still timing issues. Not really much new here in this deck for longtime followers.

The document discusses the concept of simplicity. It states that simplicity is rare but not simple to achieve. It provides examples of simple, intuitive designs from Apple and Google Search. It then discusses how simplicity can be realized through thoughtful reduction of functionality without penalty. It also notes that organization can make complex systems appear simpler by sorting, labeling, integrating and prioritizing items. The document outlines five laws of simplicity according to author John Maeda: 1) thoughtful reduction, 2) organization, 3) time savings feel like simplicity, 4) knowledge makes things simpler, and 5) some things can never be simple. It concludes that simplicity is about subtracting the obvious and adding the meaningful.
The document contains 20 quotes from Prince ranging from short phrases to full sentences on a variety of topics including music, life, freedom, spirituality, happiness, and more. Some of the quotes say music should make you feel good, life is a party that doesn't last, too much freedom can lead to soul decay, and a strong spirit transcends rules.

As humans, we never fail to think that we are highly intelligent beings, and that we are mentally superior than any other creatures found on Earth.
Well, that...... may be true.
However, we can be equally stupid and dumb too.
Worse still, we don't even realize it - in terms of how we can make erroneous judgments, decisions and choices, based on how our mind processes and filters information, as well as how our belief system works.
As intriguing and exciting this topic is to me, I find it difficult to illustrate the concepts involve, and that took me nearly 6 months to complete this work. (The Planning Fallacy in play?!) Throughout writing this deck, I've made a total of 8 major revisions before coming to this final piece.
I hope you'll find this deck both interesting and useful!
This deck contains slides I have used in live talks that (more or less) are simple and contain quite a bit of empty space. The first set are some before/after examples, followed by a random sample. This deck is not meant to tell a story -- this is just a way to show some random examples. The meaning of the slides may not be at all clear without the narration that goes with the slides.

The document discusses how being a "neighbor-designer" can help make neighborhoods more vibrant by bringing people together. It describes how a dinner party was held in an empty storefront to start a conversation about how to support local economies. This led to forming "The League of Awesome Possibilities" which has since activated additional empty storefronts. The work has connected over 300 neighbors, partnered with 30 local organizations, and sparked new collaborations and ideas to continue exploring how to enhance the community.
The document describes a "Possibility Potluck", which is a community meal held in empty storefronts with the goal of bringing neighbors together and generating ideas for how to activate vacant spaces. The main potluck discussed was co-hosted by a community council and non-profit in Chicago's Ravenswood neighborhood. Over 100 people attended the event, which was held in three storefronts that had been temporarily transformed with art, a parklet, and discussion questions. The goal was to explore ways to promote local businesses and community in the area being invested in. Ideas generated will be shared online and work will continue on creative collaborations and community connections.

This document discusses the design of a new workspace for IDEO, an innovation and design firm. It outlines key values that should be reflected in the design such as fostering a studio culture, balancing private and public spaces, and encouraging spontaneity and collaboration. Activities that define IDEO's culture are analyzed and translated into spatial implications. The design process is discussed in terms of flexibility, adaptability and allowing unintended ideas and accidents to occur naturally. The goal is to create a space that supports IDEO's culture of creativity and innovation over the long term without being too prescriptive.
BLC11: CAPS presentation for Donna DeedsMelanie Kahl
The document discusses creating an environment for innovation through partnerships, programs, and spaces. It describes the Center for Advanced Professional Studies (CAPS), which works with industry partners in fields like bioscience, business, engineering, and human services to provide authentic learning experiences for students. CAPS aims to break out of the traditional school model by focusing on cross-pollination between education and industry, liberating the curriculum through tools and real projects, and freeing instructors to facilitate instead of lecture. The goal is to prepare students for 21st century opportunities through rapid prototyping of curriculum with business input and diverse staff hiring.
