Comma with quotes rule and grammar practice 10 16-14
1. Commas With Quotes
• Use commas to introduce quotes or dialogue
with tags such as “he said” and “she asked”.
• If you give the quote before you tell who said
it, then the comma always goes inside of the
quotation marks.
• Example: “It’s too late,” Stacy replied.
• If you give the quote after you tell who said it,
then the comma always goes outside of the
quotation marks.
• Example: Jake asked, “Who stole the
chocolate?”
2. • Follow the same rules if you have two quotes
in a sentence.
• Example: “Please,” he begged, “can’t we just
talk about this?”
3. Grammar Practice 10-16-14 #2
• “We are going to study commas” the teacher
told the class.
• Amber said “We use water for many things.”
• Mark chirped in “We will never run out of
water!”
• “Yes class” the teacher explained “the water
cycle provides us with water we need.”
