Maputo, Mozambique
Capital city of Mozambique.
It is endowed with rich and extensive natural
resources.
Since 2001, Mozambique's annual average GDP
growth has been among the world's highest.
However, the country ranks among the lowest in
GDP per capita, human development, measures of
inequality, and average life expectancy.
Security
the state of being free from danger
or threat.
City planning efforts were put on holdbecause
of alack ofexpertiseand a limitedbudget
available for renewal projects.
Reason Of The Bad Security 1
Reason Of The Bad Security 2
High rate of illegal activities
News reported:
There was a horrific case in Beira where a 14
year old was kidnapped for a ransom of 1
million US dollars. His parents alerted the
police and within minutes the kidnappers
phoned the parents and told them that they
would never see their child again. He was
tortured, decapitated and dumped on the road.
Future Plan 1
Use the city’s available funds or current assets
effectively:
• Spend money on learning new knowledge
• Imitate other countries and think of new ideas.
• As a result, the city can provide a more complete facilities
to ensure the security.
Future Plan 2
Investment
Find out the way to obtain more current assets,
such as invest others country shares or fixed
assets.
Future Plan 3
Using high-tech security
• Compulsory for all homes / offices to use
this so we can reduce the risk of burglary
and other crimes.
Water and Waste
Management
Waste management
oA basic requirement of ecologically sustainable
development.
o It involves:
- Monitoring
- Collection
- Transport
- Processing
- Disposal of waste materials
Effective waste management
• Creation of cleaner
• Less wasteful
• More sustainable society
Aims :
• Control pollution of land, air, water and sediment
• Conserve resources of water, energy, raw materials and
nutrients
• Enhance business performance and maintain cooperate
social responsibility
• Improve occupational health and safety
Problems of
Waste Management
Waste is piling up in the outskirts as the economy grows.
The smoke from burning garbage is dense over
Hulene. It is almost 40°C.
Hulene is Maputo’s only landfill. About 800 tonnes
of garbage is dumped here daily, overflowing the
walls of the dump and spreading into the
surrounding residential area.
Informal garbage collectors, nearly 300 in total, are
scavenging around broken glass, toxic flames and
empty drinks cans.
Water Management
•The activity of planning, developing,
distributing and managing the optimum
use of water resources.
Water Pollution Problem
• The blooming of cyanobacteria is a serious pollution
problem because many species of these bacteria produce
toxic components, so-called cyanotoxins.
• A higher incidence of cyanobacteria has been
detected in drinking water reservoirs.
• Bacteria cells and dissolved toxins can be
found in the drinking water.
• They can have a negative effect
on human health.
Solution of Waste Management
Recycling of urban solid waste
• reduces the amount of waste to be buried
• increases the useful life of landfills
• saves energy in productive processes
• reduces air and water pollution
• reduces the levels of crime and drug consumption.
Future Plan
• Set a National Strategy for use of wastewater in
agriculture;
• Demonstrate the benefits (social and economical) of
Wastewater use in agriculture;
• Rise public awareness about Wastewater use in
agriculture;
• Assure the potential health risks are not verified;
• Promote the WTP across the nation;
• Strengthening the capacities across the nation to deal,
• Manage and maintain WTP.
Tourism and
Hospitality
Tourism
• The urban area is small and concentrated, with wide
avenues and old trees.
• People are generally out and about in the streets,
walking, driving and getting on with life.
• The vibe is healthy and active, with little begging
and lots of street vendors and markets.
• There is no heavy presence of police during the day.
• Provides a range of accommodations, from five-star
hotels to comfortable backpackers' hostels with
reasonable options.
Hospitality
• Accommodation in Maputo includes Portuguese
hospitality.
• Portuguese is a language spoken by the locals, much
of the country's cuisine offered at some of the best
accommodation in Maputo as well as at the city's
restaurants and street cafés has a Portuguese
influence.
• The Southern Sun Maputo
hotel is an example of top
accommodation in Maputo.
Future Plan 1
• Giving an education on expertise
Due to the economy, some people might have
not given opportunities to be educated.
Therefore, I suggest that government should
at least give them some basic knowledge on
expertise in order to achieve better future
plans as soon as possible.
Future Plan 2
• Managing and organizing budget well
Plan well and make sure that the
government is not running out of
budget and consider of everything
before making the first step.
Transport, Energy
Management and Disaster
Relief
Disaster Issues
In 2000 and 2001, floods had affected about a
quarter of the population and destroyed much of
its infrastructure.
In 2002, a severe drought hit many parts of the
city. Poverty remains widespread, with more than
50% of the citizens living on less than $1 a day.
Future Plan on Disaster Relief
• Reduce the impact of disasters through the
development of policies and programming.
• Encourage countries to incorporate climate
change adaptation needs into their poverty
reduction strategies.
Energy Management
• Approximately 14% of the
country has access to electricity.
• The majority of electried households live in urban
areas, with only around 5% of rural people having
access to electricity.
Imbalance energy supplies
Future Plan on
Energy Management
• Use natural resources to generate energy.
• Discover underground fuels such as
coals, oil and gas to generate more
electricity to the whole city.
Reason of
transportation problem
High urban population growth rates
• The population grew dramatically but the
infrastructures have developed slowly.
• Migration is the main factor of this problem.
Future plan on
Transportation
Emphasize on public transportation system
• City authorities should invest more on public
transportation to reduce traffic jams and
overcrowded situation.
• Create and provide new
public transport vehicles.
Future plan of train system
- Operating on city main
streets
Water public transport
- Reduce road traffic jams
and save spaces
Green Building
Background of Maputo in
green building
Rhino group for sustainable business and living
• Help its clients to develop and maintain
sustainable businesses and lifestyles
• Created two specialist divisions – “Food-water-
energy” and “Green building Solutions”.
• Rhino Plastics provides green building
solutions & products.
Living the vision
• Green building solutions, energy saving & solar
power generation and water recycling technologies.
• Retrofit included natural light harvesting and
LED lights
• Build a showcase energy and water self-
sufficient house
• Ecola Plastics, the largest privately owned
waste plastic recyclers
The companies take part in
green building in Maputo
• Rhino AgriVantage
• Rhino Water Technologies
• Rhino Energy Solutions
• Rhino Plastics
Future plans on Green
Building
THE AIM OF GREEN BUILDING COUNCIL
• Maximise living space with adequate parking,
cost effective design and materials
• Efficient construction using resources responsibly
• Design must be adaptable for all citizens
• Environmentally responsible building and
operations
Greenization program
• Using plants and trees through green roofs,
rain gardens , and reduction of rainwater run
off
• Using low impact building
materials or using packed
gravel or permeable concrete
instead of conventional
concrete or asphalt to enhance
replenishment of ground
water
•Building is made from sustainable and
energy- saving materials , from energy
efficient computer and lighting systems
to non-toxic cleaning materials.
• Green building have better
capital values, higher
occupancy rates and lower
rental comparing to the non-
green building
Conclusion
• All in all, our future plans and strategies covered
every aspect and can ensure future success in
Maputo.
• Supports and commitment from every field are
needed in keeping the momentum of city
development in the future.
