1. Focus for the Year
•How to apply the problem solving process to word
problems
•How to use different strategies to break down
problems into mathematical terms
2. When it comes to word problems, who
are you most like: Candy, Mandy or
Sandy?
Candy
•Reads a word problem only once and
immediately says “I don’t get it” and just writes
down an answer.
•Never checks to see if answer makes sense-
just proceeds to the next problem.
•Very uncomfortable with word problems
3. Mandy
•Reads a word problem, sometimes more than
once, and immediately proceeds to answer the
question.
•Can explain how she got the answer but not
always why she solved it that way.
•Sometimes she checks to see if an answer
makes sense.
•Comfortable with basic word problems.
4. Sandy
•Reads every word problem more than once to
make sure she understands the information in
the problem.
•She can explain how she solved the problem as
well as why.
•She always takes the time to check and see if
answer makes sense.
•Comfortable with most word problems.
5. This year, I expect you to work hard, come to
class prepared, and be an ACTIVE learner.
