2. It is important that both the music video and ancillary texts (digipack
and magazine poster) and combined because as it is good for the music
promotion and distribution. The purpose of a music video is to send a
message to the audience. This becomes linked in with the digipack and
magazine poster which gives the album/artists a brand. The use of the
digipack allows the buyer to see what genre of music they are
purchasing and gives them a clear sense of what they will get out of the
album. The album cover is the main promotion stage as it is what the
buyer sees first. An album cover is put in place to promote the album
and to help it reach its distribution targets. The music video and
ancillary texts should have similarities because the theme should run
throughout. Although this is not always the case in my music video and
ancillary texts I have carried out the same similarities in both. The use
of similarities in both is important as it helps to show that the music
video and ancillary texts are linked. You can show similarities with the
use of fonts, colours, pictures etc.
It is always important that the ancillary texts are appropriate for where
they are going to be distributed, e.g. in magazines. You wouldn’t want
provocative ancillary texts in a magazine which children could get hold
of.
3. Digipacks are a vital part of the
promotion of music videos as it helps
bring the video together. It gives the
audience a sneak peak to what the
video is going to be like .
As you can see in Rihanna’s digipack and magazine
poster, she has stuck to the same colour scheme and
fonts. The use of this helps to show the genre is
going to be about romance. You can tell this with the
use of the colour pink, rose flowers, and her red
lipstick.
Avicii also sticks with the same
theme throughout. He uses dark
colours yet the poster has colour.
He uses the same picture in both,
and both are very simple. The use
of the colour in the poster and the
big title shows that it is going to be
something electric, therefor
showing that it is going to be a
dance album.
It is important to have similar themes in both the
ancillary texts and music video as it allows the
buyer to know the are joined. With the same
theme run throughout it helps to show one
individual genre that the song is about, and wont
make any confusion for the audience.
4. With my ancillary texts and
music video I ran the same
theme throughout. With my
music video being cartoon, I
used cartoon pictures and I
used bold cartoon fonts to
help to show this.
Here you can see in my final poster and digipack that I made have the same
colours of grey, red, yellow and black. I used bold fonts and kept them all
the same and same colour. I done this to help show continuity, and to show
the theme running throughout, so it wont cause any confusion in the
audience.
I also took a picture of the persons face who stars in the music video and I
applied a cartoon theme on Photoshop to once again run the same theme
throughout the ancillary texts and my final music video.
I believe me running the
same theme throughout has
been very effective for
several reasons. As my video
is cartoon, if I didn’t carry
the same theme onto my
digipack and poster it
would've caused confusing
for my audience as they
wouldn’t know if it was
related. Another reason it is
effective is because it makes
it look better. If it was to all
be different colours and
fonts it wouldn’t look very
nice and wouldn’t be
aesthetically pleasing.
5. Running the same theme throughout has been successful for me for several reasons:
It shows clearly that I have the same protagonist in both the ancillary texts and music video. I believe
this works well in the marketing and promotion as people will know that they are linked and from the
same artist.
It shows women as being powerful and strong, and with my target audience being teens this could really
help young females in believing I themselves. E.g. when she is working out in the video.
I feel it has been successful as it has a narrative which allows the audience to relate to it.
the cartoon effect throughout has been successfully as I feel it can bring a range of audiences from
people who like cartoons, to people who enjoy narrative videos, and to people who just like to listen to
electronic dance music.
