The Glorious Revolution of 1688-89 saw King James II of England and Scotland, who favored absolute Catholic rule, deposed in favor of the Protestant monarchs William and Mary. As a Catholic, James II dissolved Parliament and issued decrees against the wishes of the largely Protestant people and Parliament. To prevent another Catholic monarch, Parliament invited William and Mary to take the throne. James II abdicated without violence, establishing England's constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy.
