Decent
The Purpose
The Decent is an heart gripping and emotional
rollercoaster experience, that would stun
anyone. This begin with the emotional rapid
ride that shows the relationship between the
main characters; Sarah,Beth and juno
(Shauna Macdonald, Natalie Mendoza and
Alex Reid). Then escalating to a sinister and
shocking death of Paul and Jessica (Sarah's
husband and daughter) . Sticking to generic
and in some cases cliché. starting the
disequilibrium of the movie, this than effects
Sarah form this point on and allows for PTSD
to set into her prefrontal cortex affecting her
decisions throughout the movie. With the use
of dark and claustrophobic lighting also
allows for the confusion felt by the mental
unstable Sarah.I feel that this has been done
to strike fear into viewer and allows for a
better cinematic experience.
Some of the clichés used are generic to the
horror genre, this is shown in the scene that
first introduces the crawler, by using an
original technique (The Jump scare) although
it is effective and has been used appropriately
it is still one of the original horror techniques.
The Meaning
The decent undergoes several Different
interpretations. This is because of the way
that Sarah reacts and is portrayed through out
after her encounter with death and the loss of
her family. This dramatic time is filmed with
skill and class without the over use and under
use of lighting and camera angles. this is
shown with realistic costume and props. This
is effective because it is visually entertaining
and colour, language and cinematography in
sync with the story line and is not over done.
including good camera and language in the
hospital and cave scene’s.

2. style and content
The structure of the movie is liar and goes
into a chronological order for the events that
happen. Furthermore the sound and special
effects used add tot he style of the movie
and make it Diverse.This is shown to be
effective in the cave when chromakeys are
use along with sound effects that are added
in post production process. this is effective
because it add as vastness of the cave and
then the sudden change to chlostraphobic
spaces caverns. Following this the sound
effects used support the secludedness of
cave and add to the unknown horrors that
Genre
The Genre of this movie is seen to be an “Action
Horror” quoted form the director Neil Marshall.
this is different and interesting compared most
modern horror movies. this is because of the
way that is set out as faced passed and set in
two half that is shown to be diverse int he
horror genre. also the use of differs conventions
i interesting although some are the same going
back to the “jump scare” but the whole wide of
being in a secluded cave and having no escape
is not a new convention but is not used in many

The story line of this is original and contain
working codes and conventions from horror,
also with the use of different movie techniques.
this allows for the story to be tolled with
different emotions and effect such as
claustrophobic responses. ht would to work
shown i a different format such as a stage play
or novel. this is because it would not pay with
the same emotions that the cinematic movie
version does so well.
To conclude, the decent is an all right thriller
that can grip the viewer and drag them into a pit
of horror and death. effecting each and every
emotion that humans can comprehend. making
the hairs on the back of you neck stand on end
for the purity of the movie and not allow for a
laps in concentration. finally i my opinion The
Decent is a great movie that is emotional
engaging that i would recommend for thrill
seekers. This is because of the emasculate
horror structure and execution of scenes by Neil
Marshal.
