EFOW Draft Notes at Interview Club of Amsterdam: Energy Future
1. DRAFT PROPOSED INTERVIEW/ DIALOGUE
OUTLINE-
Club of Amsterdam, Katie King, 23rd May 2023
Intro/ EFOW
Five Reasons
Five Reasons I enjoy having workshops on Energy, Energy Transition and
Innovation- and have some more open conversations on (Re-designing/
Re-organizing) Energy and Energy Transition :
1. War & Peace,. The Impact on Energy Land, The Prize and The Quest for
Oil, Money and Power. Geo-Politics of Emotions.
2. Inequalities and Distribution of Energy,. Availabilities and Affordabilities.
Energy Rich and Energy Poor. The Rich and The Poor.
3. Club of Rome and 50 years after the Club of Rome ( Earth4All), and the
Science Agenda: Nature and our Planetary Boundaries. 6 out of 9
planetary boundaries are in the red. Another small reality is ; that our
crossings of these natural boundaries comes faster at us, now- then
imagined a decade ago. The Limits to Growth, Beyond Growth, Mining and
Earth Resources
2. 4. Paris Agreement and UN SDGs 2030. Paris Agreement was made, with
Sector Parties Lobbying for it (not to) succeed: a very complex and
voluntary set of arrangements in the hands of the politicians bound to fail,
not work and/or threatening the ruling Oil and Gas Elite/ Sector. Now
almost a decade after the agreement, but with Climate Realities in full face,
no former senior leadership of these Oil and Gas corporations dare to
speak-up- for reasons of litigation or justice (held responsibilities)
We are Halfway 2030, and we know we are off-track and we can take
stock of how we are doing. What is going well? What deserves our
attention? And what can we do differently coming monday morning
5. Leadership and Leadership values> in full service ( Zadok The Priest &
King Charles III, Servant Leadership, Responsible Leadership: a bit of
wisdom, compassion and care)
3. Five simple examples of New Possibility Thinking: Better organizing
Ourselves for Success
Energy- Economy Architectures Free of Concerns
Energy Transition is Change, and Change from the Status Quo and “
Normal” Free market operations (ie level playing field). If our aim is “
the Great Electrification” ( making room for renewables) - than our
re-designing energy architecture is best to focus on how the change
from System 1 to System 2. : From A to B.
1. Market Interventions
a. Energy = an Utility and Service to the People/ Economies (powering
people) vs
Energy= Free Market (Profit, Portfolio, Opportunity, Speculation)
(powering profit)
2. Sector Interventions
a. Regional Collaborations for Renewable Power Grids, electrification
of Homes and Cars, and Gardens ;- industries. Elon Musk Master
Plan 3, Mark Jacobson 100% electrification/ renewables calculus of
US and Rest.
b. Energy to the Rich- vs Energy to the Poor (it takes 200 bn US to
power Africa (all the 2 billion people around the planet without
electricity or cooking oils)
4. c. In the Oil , Gas and Mining sectors: renewed focus on Production to
Reserves Ratios. Pay for Reserves base- 7 generations vs. focus on
Emissions.
d. Heal Physical Markets vs. Financial (speculative, commodified)
markets
e. Steer on Capacities and Volumes (“ Making Room for the New” ), vs
on a derivative ( CO2 tax, ETS, CCUS, etc)
3. Corporate Governance interventions
a. Energy Transition is Change, and Change from the Status Quo and
normal Free market operations (ie . Take-back societal ownership
over large public listed multi-national corporations - too large to fail.
Europe is without any sized relevant National Oil and Gas, Energy
company- other then TOTALEnergies. No Reserves in Europe- for
the next 7 generations. .: transform corporations from portfolio
optimization to true holders of responsibilities over the energy
transition from Fossil Fuels to Electrification.
b. Environmental Movement: Court & Climategates (negative energies)
c. Boardroom compositions and Roles & Responsibilities to Society
4. Trade and Trade Development Interventions
a. There is a big need and call from the Global South for help and
assistance (technologies, capabilities, capacities) in the realm of
new energy-architectures build-out. Unfortunately this call has been “
politicized” and taken into the pandoras box of the Climate
Negotiations: all about finance, money., guilt and shame (“ climate
colonialism”). A swedish diplomat once sighed: it is not about the
money, but it is about the leadership skills and program frames - at
both sides. ( and another hard truth: ever since the War in Ukraine-
5. the Norwegian Sovereign Wealth fund is hardly investing in the
Global South: Risk and Uncertainties - Political climate)
b. As a result: no one is listening any longer (western energy policies
are suspect, anyway- rich, developed, greedy elite), and countries
retrench in established energy trades. US/OECD vs BRICS
c. Healthier, if we know how to direct our large corporate trade and
trade agenda - on food, energy, infrastructure, but also health,
education, non-energy jobs- in a more peaceful and bridge building
buddy programs , using the UN SDGs and The Global Compact :
They needs strengthening, and the call for program and program
framing needs to be filled-in. UN SG Guterres helplessly calls for a
new investments of at least 500 bn USD/year (added on top of
climate finance) Change the established practice of licensing and
licensing rounds on OIl and Gas in host, developing nations- and
avoid new Angolas, Nigerias, Venezuelas- but build Omans,
Norways - if Earth mining and oil and Gas are in the trade.
d. Example of General Electric: ⅓ of the world is powered by GE,
however- the technologies and capabilities are not given away to be
Africanized., (remains in the Hard currency dollar/ BUsiness earning
circle)
e. Take this serious: Good Integrated Program Framing and
Governance is here King.. How many examples have I seen over the
last 10 years, of Kings, Presidents and Prime Ministers of Nw
Europe and USA travelling the world, and speaking with one tongue
about Climate and UN SDGs and with the second tongue - and with
their CEOs of their national corporations, sign large trade deals
which are intense, and far removed from what is ideal.

Re-designing Energy (Future Making Energy)
The aim of these open conversations are to provide the audience with some of the width and
depth in energy transition, energy policies, climate action and sustainable development, in this
decade of action.
The dialogues and conversations are in no means conclusive, or complete- but will provide the
audience with some “ good handle” on the present (Urgencies- Realities and Opportunities),
and is also aimed to inspire (“ Light the Fire” / “ Step-up”) ) - each of the audience - to build New
Bridges and to Re-designing Energy- , coming monday morning, in our decade of action, and by
imagining and realizing Year 2050.
Energy System
Energy is front page news across the world. A lot has changed in the past few
months. Yet what we have learned as THE world energy community over 100
years is more relevant than ever.
Energy is a system – behind every button, switch and fuel pump is a myriad of
connections and interactions.
Energy transition is a process, not a destination. And it can’t be delivered all in
one go. Energy system diversity, in its broadest sense, is increasing.
The future of energy cannot be predicted or controlled, but better energy futures
can be imagined and co-created, now (“ The Great Electrification”)
And lastly, energy technology transition always involves technological, societal
and business disruption and economies to change.. As the relationships between
9. energy technologies, business, our economies and society change, so do our
relationships with each other.
Clean, affordable, reliable and equitable solutions in energy are possible, but
there is no free or one-size-fits-all quick win. It’s not as simple as swapping old
technology for new, or. throwing money at the problem. The next big thing is not
a global technology moon shot but a series of well directed, elected and
place-based steps.
Today
The War in the Ukraine has surely upended many held beliefs and outlooks in
this world: New Fears, New Chaos and New Hopes and Opportunism. It is a
crisis of yet unknown dimensions and proportions. As we all like to work from
courage and optimism, and we may aspire to be Bridge Builders, Peace and
Future-makers with Energy, Climate Action and Sustainable Development.
It is, However, with the Geo-politics of emotions between the Big Brother Nations
(USA, China, Russia) , combined with the latest developments in the conflict of
the Ukraine (e.g. Nordstream, Nuclear Threat, Annexation, Continued escalation
in word and deeds) this does not make presently good bed-time reading.
The Ukraine War, and the energy crisis in Europe, including price hikes, scare of
scarcities and supply flow securities, has surely made a dent in the international
gas and energy markets. As Energy connects and touches everything- we see
large scale inflations, new energy proverties, and LNG cargoes being re-directed
and traded for, and a run and rush for new gas supply contracts and mining for
earth minerals are made - with the speed of light.
The sentiments and moods, internationally, over the Ukraine war, are not shared
equally from East to West and North to South (e.g. also effecting sentiments in
10. OPECPlus, GECF , IEF, India etc), and many countries see themselves suffering
or having difficulties in their development pathways (finance, food, energy,
climate ) - and in some eyes- due to Western Sanctions and due to the fact that
European Nations are buying and securing themselves new Gas and Oil from
the International Markets, at a cost of the least developed and the poor., What
could have been done a little differently, or how do we keep or ensure the
markets- that the markets keep working to all? .
How can we mend and fuse the American Dream, The China Dream and the
Russian Dream into the World Energy Dream?
Year 2050
Imagine yourself in the Year 2050, and imagine yourself the world we can future
make, from today and tomorrow onwards,
Imagine you a World where we can make Energy-Economies Free of Concerns.
Here and There, Now and Tomorrow
Our toolbox for making our world better, peaceful and whole, in our Economies,
in our Energy Architecture and in electing Sustainable Development to all- is full
to the brim,
What steps or actions could we make, in Energy Land, to keep making Peace
and Prosperities about ( Asia, Africa, Latin America) with Energy and Climate
Action, and making Energy-Economies Free of Concerns? Here and There, Now
and Tomorrow.1

( and let us guard ourselves, and not to be lured to make decisions in crisis
mode, that locks ourselves in, and do not help us to see us to arrive at this better
place)
