We manipulate the planet and all of its creatures. We create, we consume, we build, and we
destroy, but how often do we consider the processes and people that provide unceasingly for our
unquenchable appetites? How often do we consider the consequences? This essay asks that you
consider the inner (and outer) workings of the US food system and then take a position on a
narrowed down aspect of it.
During this project we might ask ourselves any combination of the following: where does our food
come from, and at what cost? How have our foods been processed, conceived, even constructed, and then shipped and
stored? How do we treat the animals we eat? How should we treat them? How are they killed? How conscious are
we of the world we are taking from every single day? Where do we fit in? What do we have to say?
To accomplish your task, you will be using pairings of articles I provide in order to take part in
an ongoing conversation about food. These readings will require you to look closely at what we
eat and how our consumption shapes the world, in both positive and negative ways.
You will need to first consider our relationship with food and the consequences of our eating
habits, on individuals, societies, and the planet that we share, then narrow down your focus to an
individual and focused topic/idea, which you will then research independently so that you might
enter into a scholarly conversation. The goal of this essay is to either make your own claim about
your subject, or to support an already established claim with rational and logical reasons and
evidence in order to convince your reader to take up the same position that you hold.
This essay need not be a soapbox for any political agenda; instead, we are looking for a balance
in rhetorical strategies. Using ethos, pathos, and logos effectively means respecting all viewpoints
while backing up your claims with reputable sources and logical insights/analysis.
In the wise words of Christopher Hitchens: “That which can be asserted without
evidence, can be dismissed without evidence.”
While I value each and every one of your opinions, scholarly readers are less forgiving. Imagine
your audience to be educated readers who are familiar with the topic and themes we will be
exploring. These readers will expect you to back up your claims, and to use reputable sources.

English 202 Research Paper Assignment
Text: The research paper is a documented prose work resulting from an organized analysis of a subject. Your paper will examine a particular writer’s work. The short stories you have chosen to read will be the focus of your research paper. It is not a biographical sketch of the writer; however, you may include biographical information if it relates to your thesis. It is not a plot summary; I can read the book or play for that. Primarily, you are going to take a position about the works and use specific events or quotes from the work to support and explain that position. Your thesis statement will be based upon this position. In addition, you are going to examine what literary critics have to say concerning the works. You must read the works prior to beginning your research.
Format: Research papers must be typed and formatted according to MLA documentation style. This includes using Times New Roman, 12 point font. You will be expected to list each of your sources in proper MLA format on the Works Cited page at the end of your research paper. You will also use proper MLA parenthetical internal documentation throughout your paper. The New McGraw-HillHandbook or an MLA guidebook is an absolute necessity. You cannot pass the research paper if your format is wrong!
Length: A minimum of five full pages of text (double-spaced). In addition, you will include a Works Cited page.
Sources: A minimum of six (6) sources is required. You must have four (4) secondary sources quoted directly in the body paragraphs (there should be at least 1 secondary source per main point). You cannot pass the research paper without including four secondary sources. The literary works you have chosen (short stories) will count as a fifth and sixth source, the primary sources. There are many sources available for literary research, and I expect you to use a variety of sources. You should use at least one article as a source, and you can have only one Internet source. Masterplots, Cliffs Notes, Spark Notes, eNotes, Grade Saver, Wikipedia, and Classic Notes DO NOT count as a source.
Process: You will be expected to follow a guided process in your research and writing. I have designed the course to make it easier for you to write a research paper step by step. On the course syllabus, I have indicated dates when topics, annotated bibliographies, thesis statements and outlines, and rough drafts are due. I will be maintaining a file which will indicate whether or not you have completed these steps. Where is the Thesis Statement?
Depending on the kind of paper you’re writing, the thesis statement can appear in a variety of places. But MOST often, the thesis statement comes at the very end of the first paragraph. It’s often the last sentence of your introduction.
Examples
Taylor Swift should be allowed to trademark phrases such as ‘this sick beat’ from her new album 1989 because these phrases are recognizable by consumers as Swift’s creations, and Swift deserves the proceeds from merchandise inspired directly by her music.
Old Ox Brewery should not have to submit to Red Bull’s requests because these two companies produce different products, their labels are already distinguishable, and Old Ox Brewery is so small that it is unlikely to threaten Red Bull’s profits.
Scientists should not be able to patent genetically engineered DNA because it is impossible to prove ownership of entire DNA sequences, and both the science community and laypeople would benefit from openly sharing new ideas to advance medical technology.
Note that the words in red are the “claim,” the argument you’re making. The claim is followed by TWO or THREE reasons the author will use to support, back up, prove his claim. The word “because” joins the claim and the reasons.
Discuss with students how each of these examples highlight the topic, side, and reasons. VERY IMPORTANT.

I. DEFINING THE RESEARCH PAPER
A literary research paper--unlike a research paper on abortion or euthanasia--focuses on critically
analyzing/interpreting the meaning of literature. What's more, the term "research" implies that you will be
incorporating research from reputable secondary sources into your paper. In short, you will be
analyzing/interpreting a piece (or several pieces) of literature and supporting your analysis with
"research."
The research paper must be at least eight (8) pages in length, and it must adhere to MLA standards and
guidelines. Further, you must include a minimum of seven (7) sources in your paper, six (6) of which must
be considered "secondary sources" (explained below), and it must include a "Works Cited" page.
II. GETTING STARTED
Your first step in writing the research paper is to decide which author (or authors) you would like to write
about. You are required to make your selection(s) from the authors we have discussed this
semester, although you are more than welcome to find texts from your chosen author(s) that were not
included on the syllabus.
After you have decided which author (or authors) you are interested in writing about, you need to decide
which texts to include in your discussion; this may change as the paper progresses, but you should begin
with a clear idea of which texts you would like to include in your analysis.
The next and most obvious step in the process is to read and then reread--several times--the text or texts
you have chosen. In order to say something meaningful about a text, you need to know it backward and
forward. As one critic relates, you need to "have a sure sense of what the work itself is like, how its parts
function, what ideas it expresses, how it creates particular effects, and what your responses are." In short,
read, reread, and then when you think you are done, read some more.
After you are comfortable with your knowledge of the text (or texts), the next step is to develop an angle
of analysis. In other words, you need to decide how you want to approach and organize your paper.
There are several different ways to organize a literary research paper, but more likely than not you will
want to adopt one of the following organizing principles:
A. Literary Elements: A research paper that is organized around literary elements generally
includes a focused discussion on one or more of the following: setting, speaker, symbolism, irony,
imagery, tone, language, etc.
B. Themes: A research paper that is organized around a theme, such as death, life, love, race,
gender, class, cultural identity, etc., generally includes a focused discussion on the role a
particular theme plays in several pieces of literature.
C. Critical Approaches: Whether you knew it or not, you adopted a specific approach to analyzing
literature in both of the essays you wrote for class, namely a "formalist" approach to

This course takes Asian women living in the US as the focus of analyses of identity,
culture, and political economy. We will examine works by and about Asian American
women from multiple disciplines, in order to elucidate how Asian American women
have been represented and treated as the objects of history and culture, as well as
how Asian American women in turn shape these forces. By exploring the areas of
immigration and settlement, social stereotyping, identity construction, family,
community, labor, organized resistance, and cultural production, we will attempt to

An argumentative or persuasive piece of writing must begin with a debatable thesis or claim. In other words, the
thesis must be something that people could reasonably have differing opinions on. If your thesis is something that is
generally agreed upon or accepted as fact then there is no reason to try to persuade people.

of your first paragraph (or occasionally your second paragraph).
Requirement 2: A Well-Organized Body
The body of the paper is where you flesh out your thesis and present your evidence. Most people
find it helpful to outline before beginning to write. It is important that you move logically from
point to point as you move from paragraph to paragraph.

We manipulate the planet and all of its creatures. We create, we consume, we build, and we
destroy, but how often do we consider the processes and people that provide unceasingly for our
unquenchable appetites? How often do we consider the consequences? This essay asks that you
consider the inner (and outer) workings of the US food system and then take a position on a
narrowed down aspect of it.
During this project we might ask ourselves any combination of the following: where does our food
come from, and at what cost? How have our foods been processed, conceived, even constructed, and then shipped and
stored? How do we treat the animals we eat? How should we treat them? How are they killed? How conscious are
we of the world we are taking from every single day? Where do we fit in? What do we have to say?
To accomplish your task, you will be using pairings of articles I provide in order to take part in
an ongoing conversation about food. These readings will require you to look closely at what we
eat and how our consumption shapes the world, in both positive and negative ways.
You will need to first consider our relationship with food and the consequences of our eating
habits, on individuals, societies, and the planet that we share, then narrow down your focus to an
individual and focused topic/idea, which you will then research independently so that you might
enter into a scholarly conversation. The goal of this essay is to either make your own claim about
your subject, or to support an already established claim with rational and logical reasons and
evidence in order to convince your reader to take up the same position that you hold.
This essay need not be a soapbox for any political agenda; instead, we are looking for a balance
in rhetorical strategies. Using ethos, pathos, and logos effectively means respecting all viewpoints
while backing up your claims with reputable sources and logical insights/analysis.

Text: The research paper is a documented prose work resulting from an organized analysis of a subject. Your paper will examine a particular writer’s work. The short stories you have chosen to read will be the focus of your research paper. It is not a biographical sketch of the writer; however, you may include biographical information if it relates to your thesis. It is not a plot summary; I can read the book or play for that. Primarily, you are going to take a position about the works and use specific events or quotes from the work to support and explain that position. Your thesis statement will be based upon this position. In addition, you are going to examine what literary critics have to say concerning the works. You must read the works prior to beginning your research.
Format: Research papers must be typed and formatted according to MLA documentation style. This includes using Times New Roman, 12 point font. You will be expected to list each of your sources in proper MLA format on the Works Cited page at the end of your research paper. You will also use proper MLA parenthetical internal documentation throughout your paper. The New McGraw-HillHandbook or an MLA guidebook is an absolute necessity. You cannot pass the research paper if your format is wrong!
Length: A minimum of five full pages of text (double-spaced). In addition, you will include a Works Cited page.
Sources: A minimum of six (6) sources is required. You must have four (4) secondary sources quoted directly in the body paragraphs (there should be at least 1 secondary source per main point). You cannot pass the research paper without including four secondary sources. The literary works you have chosen (short stories) will count as a fifth and sixth source, the primary sources. There are many sources available for literary research, and I expect you to use a variety of sources. You should use at least one article as a source, and you can have only one Internet source. Process: You will be expected to follow a guided process in your research and writing. I have designed the course to make it easier for you to write a research paper step by step. Where is the Thesis Statement?
Depending on the kind of paper you’re writing, the thesis statement can appear in a variety of places. But MOST often, the thesis statement comes at the very end of the first paragraph. It’s often the last sentence of your introduction.
Examples
Taylor Swift should be allowed to trademark phrases such as ‘this sick beat’ from her new album 1989 because these phrases are recognizable by consumers as Swift’s creations, and Swift deserves the proceeds from merchandise inspired directly by her music.
Old Ox Brewery should not have to submit to Red Bull’s requests because these two companies produce different products, their labels are already distinguishable, and Old Ox Brewery is so small that it is unlikely to threaten Red Bull’s profits.
Scientists should not be able to patent genetically engineered DNA because it is impossible to prove ownership of entire DNA sequences, and both the science community and laypeople would benefit from openly sharing new ideas to advance medical technology.
Note that the words in red are the “claim,” the argument you’re making. The claim is followed by TWO or THREE reasons the author will use to support, back up, prove his claim. The word “because” joins the claim and the reasons.
Discuss with students how each of these examples highlight the topic, side, and reasons. VERY IMPORTANT.

I. DEFINING THE RESEARCH PAPER
A literary research paper--unlike a research paper on abortion or euthanasia--focuses on critically
analyzing/interpreting the meaning of literature. What's more, the term "research" implies that you will be
incorporating research from reputable secondary sources into your paper. In short, you will be
analyzing/interpreting a piece (or several pieces) of literature and supporting your analysis with
"research."
The research paper must be at least eight (8) pages in length, and it must adhere to MLA standards and
guidelines. Further, you must include a minimum of seven (7) sources in your paper, six (6) of which must
be considered "secondary sources" (explained below), and it must include a "Works Cited" page.
II. GETTING STARTED
Your first step in writing the research paper is to decide which author (or authors) you would like to write
about. You are required to make your selection(s) from the authors we have discussed this
semester, although you are more than welcome to find texts from your chosen author(s) that were not
included on the syllabus.
After you have decided which author (or authors) you are interested in writing about, you need to decide
which texts to include in your discussion; this may change as the paper progresses, but you should begin
with a clear idea of which texts you would like to include in your analysis.
The next and most obvious step in the process is to read and then reread--several times--the text or texts
you have chosen. In order to say something meaningful about a text, you need to know it backward and
forward. As one critic relates, you need to "have a sure sense of what the work itself is like, how its parts
function, what ideas it expresses, how it creates particular effects, and what your responses are." In short,
read, reread, and then when you think you are done, read some more.
After you are comfortable with your knowledge of the text (or texts), the next step is to develop an angle
of analysis. In other words, you need to decide how you want to approach and organize your paper.
There are several different ways to organize a literary research paper, but more likely than not you will
want to adopt one of the following organizing principles:
A. Literary Elements: A research paper that is organized around literary elements generally
includes a focused discussion on one or more of the following: setting, speaker, symbolism, irony,
imagery, tone, language, etc.
B. Themes: A research paper that is organized around a theme, such as death, life, love, race,
gender, class, cultural identity, etc., generally includes a focused discussion on the role a
particular theme plays in several pieces of literature.
C. Critical Approaches: Whether you knew it or not, you adopted a specific approach to analyzing
literature in both of the essays you wrote for class, namely a "formalist" approach to

immigration and settlement, social stereotyping, identity construction, family,

An argumentative or persuasive piece of writing must begin with a debatable thesis or claim. In other words, the
thesis must be something that people could reasonably have differing opinions on. If your thesis is something that is
generally agreed upon or accepted as fact then there is no reason to try to persuade people.
__ In general, your thesis statement should be 1-2 sentences long and should be found at the end
of your first paragraph (or occasionally your second paragraph).
Requirement 2: A Well-Organized Body
The body of the paper is where you flesh out your thesis and present your evidence. Most people
find it helpful to outline before beginning to write. It is important that you move logically from
point to point as you move from paragraph to paragraph.

This central idea is generally expressed in a topic sentence which is usually the first or second sentence in a
paragraph. Many people find it helpful to string their topic sentences together after completing an essay. This
