A Costly Interruption: The Sermon On the Mount, pt. 2 - Blessed
Proper Preaching
1. Proper Preaching
Titus 1:3
3 But hath in due times manifested his word
through preaching, which is committed unto me
according to the commandment of God our Saviour;
Everyone is preaching something; how do you
recognize preaching from God vs from man?
Jonah 3:2 Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city,
and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee.
Jonah 3:4 And Jonah began to enter into the
city a day's journey, and he cried, and said, Yet
forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.
The greatest things man can do will be judged by
an even Greater, God. This judgment is soon to
come.
Matt 3:1-2 1 In those days came John the Baptist,
preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,
2 And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven
is at hand.
Proper preaching tells a man he must change to line
up with God.
2. Luke 3:3 And he came into all the country
about Jordan, preaching the baptism of
repentance for the remission of sins;
Mark 1:14-15 14 Now after that John was put
in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching
the gospel of the kingdom of God,
15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the
kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and
believe the gospel.
Matt 4:23 And Jesus went about all Galilee,
teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the
gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of
sickness and all manner of disease among the
people. Proper preaching gives hope.
Luke 8:1 And it came to pass afterward, that he
went throughout every city and village,
preaching and shewing the glad tidings of the
kingdom of God: and the twelve were with him,
Luke 9:5-6 5 And whosoever will not receive you,
when ye go out of that city, shake off the very dust
from your feet for a testimony against them.
6 And they departed, and went through the towns,
preaching the gospel, and healing every where.
3. Matt 12:41 The men of Nineveh shall rise in
judgment with this generation, and shall condemn
it: because they repented at the preaching of
Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here.
Jonah never preached “repent” God’s word “Repent”
was manifest when Jonah preached God’s message,
“the judge is coming to town”.
Luke 11:32 The men of Nineve shall rise up in
the judgment with this generation, and shall
condemn it: for they repented at the preaching
of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is
here.
Acts 8:3-4 3 As for Saul, he made havock of the
church, entering into every house, and haling men
and women committed them to prison.
4 Therefore they that were scattered abroad went
every where preaching the word.
They are preaching “out of season”. Christians are
being killed and are running for their life, but still
preaching.
Acts 8:12 But when they believed Philip preaching
the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the
name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men
and women.
If Christ is not magnified it’s not preaching.
4. Acts 10:36 The word which God sent unto the
children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus
Christ: (he is Lord of all:)
Acts 28:31 Preaching the kingdom of God, and
teaching those things which concern the Lord
Jesus Christ, with all confidence, no man
forbidding him.
1Cor 15:14 And if Christ be not risen, then is
our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.
Acts 15:35 Paul also and Barnabas continued in
Antioch, teaching and preaching the word of the
Lord, with many others also.
You can’t teach without preaching, and you can’t
preach with out teaching.
Acts 20:9-10 9 And there sat in a window a certain
young man named Eutychus, being fallen into a
deep sleep: and as Paul was long preaching, he sunk
down with sleep, and fell down from the third loft,
and was taken up dead.
10 And Paul went down, and fell on him, and
embracing him said, Trouble not yourselves; for his
life is in him.
The point of preaching is not to “make a killing”;
5. but someone should be cast down (the old man) and
life from within should move to flesh.
This is accomplished by “long preaching”; maybe not
all in one sitting but it takes a lot of preaching to
conquer the flesh.
Rom 16:25-26 25 Now to him that is of power to
stablish you according to my gospel, and the
preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the
revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret
since the world began,
26 But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures
of the prophets, according to the commandment of
the everlasting God, made known to all nations for
the obedience of faith:
To be a “stablish[ed]” Christian it takes two things:
Doctrine (“my gospel”) and preaching.
This is accomplished by “the scriptures”.
1Cor 1:17 For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to
preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest
the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.
1Cor 1:21 For after that in the wisdom of God the
world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by
the foolishness of preaching to save them that
believe.
If you are afraid of being a fool, you’ll never be a
preacher. Preaching is humbling, you will say
something stupid.
6. 1Cor 2:4 And my speech and my preaching was
not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in
demonstration of the Spirit and of power:
2Tim 4:17 Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me,
and strengthened me; that by me the preaching
might be fully known, and that all the Gentiles
might hear: and I was delivered out of the mouth of
the lion.
There is a special benefit for preaching.
Titus 1:3
3 But hath in due times manifested his word
through preaching, which is committed unto me
according to the commandment of God our Saviour;
