1. MENE MENE TEKEL UPHARSIN
Dan 5:1-7
1 Belshazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand of
his lords, and drank wine before the thousand.
2 Belshazzar, whiles he tasted the wine, commanded to
bring the golden and silver vessels which his father
Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple which was in
Jerusalem; that the king, and his princes, his wives, and his
concubines, might drink therein.
3 Then they brought the golden vessels that were taken
out of the temple of the house of God which was at
Jerusalem; and the king, and his princes, his wives, and his
concubines, drank in them.
4 They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of
silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone.
5 In the same hour came forth fingers of a man's hand,
and wrote over against the candlestick upon the plaister of
the wall of the king's palace: and the king saw the part of
the hand that wrote.
6 Then the king's countenance was changed, and his
thoughts troubled him, so that the joints of his loins were
loosed, and his knees smote one against another.
7 The king cried aloud to bring in the astrologers, the
Chaldeans, and the soothsayers. And the king spake, and
2. said to the wise men of Babylon, Whosoever shall read this
writing, and shew me the interpretation thereof, shall be
clothed with scarlet, and have a chain of gold about his
neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.

13 Then was Daniel brought in before the king. And the
king spake and said unto Daniel, Art thou that Daniel,
which art of the children of the captivity of Judah, whom
the king my father brought out of Jewry?
Dan 5:25-28
25 And this is the writing that was written, MENE, MENE,
TEKEL, UPHARSIN.
26 This is the interpretation of the thing: MENE; God hath
numbered thy kingdom, and finished it.
27 TEKEL; Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found
wanting.
28 PERES; Thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes
and Persians.
The events recorded in this chapteroccurred in the 51st
year of
the captivity of the Jews.
Consider the years of these prophecies ignored.
3. One hundred and fifty years prior to their fulfilment all was
foretold.
It was predicted that Cyrus, the king of Persia, would be
the conqueror (Isa 45:1);
and this was fulfilled,for it was the Persian troops,
commanded by Cyrus, that captured the city.
It was predicted that the river Euphrates would be dried
up before the city was taken (Isa 44:27);
and this was fulfilledwhen the soldiers of Cyrus
diverted the river from its course.
It was predicted that, when the city was taken, its “gates
would not be shut” (Isa 45:1);
and this was fulfilled.
It was predicted that on the night of the capture the
Babylonians would be given up to drunkenness, and
unaware of their peril: (Jer 1:24) “I have laida snare for
thee, and thou art also taken, O Babylon,and thou wast
not aware thou art found and also caught” Jer 51:57)--
“And I will make drunk her princes and her wise men, her
captainsand her rulers, and her mighty men; and they
shall sleep a perpetualsleep, and not wake”.
And this too was fulfilled,for Cyrus selected the
occasion of a great festival for entering the city; and
Herodotus relates that the inhabitantswere given up
to reveling and dancing--thatthe guards were
drinking in the palace when the Persians rushed in
and slew them, and that the monarch and the princes
and the captainswere slain at a feast.

I. Accounting will be Calculated
Man is a steward whether he does the job responsibly or
not.
When Death’s bony finger writes over against a man’s soul
MENE it will be the end of opportunity; for reckoning has begun.

men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the
day of judgment.

of himself to God.

submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they
that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and

to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked
in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings,
banquetings, and abominable idolatries:

them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you:
5 Who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the
quick and the dead.

Every life is individually placein the balances.All man’s
reasoning and self-righteousness will measure less than air
when the Lamb of God steps on the scale.
A. The weight of Righteousness
Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there
is none other name under heaven given among men,
whereby we must be saved.
6. Rom 10:3 For they being ignorant of God's righteousness,
and going about to establish their own righteousness,
have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of
God.
Rom 10:4 For Christ is the end of the law for
righteousness to every one that believeth.
B. The weight of sanctification
2Cor 4:16-18 16 For which cause we faint not; but
though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is
renewed day by day.
17 For our light affliction, which is but for a moment,
worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight
of glory;
18 While we look not at the things which are seen, but at
the things which are not seen: for the things which are
seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are
eternal.
2Tim 2:20-21 20 But in a great house there are not only
vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of
earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour.
7. 21 If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall
be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the
master's use, and prepared unto every good work.
1Cor 6:9-11 9 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall
not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither
fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate,
nor abusers of themselves with mankind,
10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers,
nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.
11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye
are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord
Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.
Eph 5:26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the
washing of water by the word,
Christians that live without the word of God are
living unclean lives.
Eph 5:27 That he might present it to himself a glorious
church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but
that it should be holy and without blemish.
8. 1Thess 4:3-4 3 For this is the will of God, even your
sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication:
4 That every one of you should know how to possess his
vessel in sanctification and honour;
Every Christian’s life will be weighed against God’s perfect will
for that individual. This should be no problem; it is a Christian
who unlike Belshazzar, knows there will be a day of Justice
Demonstrated.

Belshazzar’s kingdom was taken from him and divided between
the Medea and Persians.
A. Recompense of the Lost
Isa 59:18 According to their deeds, accordingly he will
repay, fury to his adversaries, recompence to his enemies;
to the islands he will repay recompence.
Jer 51:6 Flee out of the midst of Babylon, and deliver
every man his soul: be not cut off in her iniquity; for this is
9. the time of the LORD'S vengeance; he will render unto her
a recompence.
Jer 51:56 Because the spoiler is come upon her, even
upon Babylon, and her mighty men are taken, every one
of their bows is broken: for the LORD God of recompences
shall surely requite.
Heb 2:2-3 2 For if the word spoken by angels was
stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience
received a just recompence of reward;
3 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation;
which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was
confirmed unto us by them that heard him;

your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the
prophets which were before you.

one: and every man shall receive his own reward
according to his own labour.
Col 3:24 Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the
reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.
Heb 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him:
for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and
that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
Heb 10:35 Cast not away therefore your confidence,
which hath great recompence of reward.
Heb 11:26 Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches
than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the
recompence of the reward.
The words written by the finger of God were not important to
Belshazzar until the finger of God wrote his epitaph.
Exod 8:19 Then the magicians said unto Pharaoh, This is
the finger of God: and Pharaoh's heart was hardened, and
he hearkened not unto them; as the LORD had said.
11. Deut 9:10 And the LORD delivered unto me two tables of
stone written with the finger of God; and on them was
written according to all the words, which the LORD spake
with you in the mount out of the midst of the fire in the
day of the assembly.
Luke 11:20 But if I with the finger of God cast out devils,
no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you.
