A Series on the Sermon on the Mount
"Worry Free Living”
August 28, 2016
Matthew 6:25-34
Matthew 6:25-34
25
“Therefore, I say to you, don’t worry about your life, what you’ll
eat or what you’ll drink, or about your body, what you’ll wear. Isn’t
life more than food and the body more than clothes? 26
Look at the
birds in the sky. They don’t sow seed or harvest grain or gather crops
into barns. Yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you worth
much more than they are? 27 Who among you by worrying can add a
single moment to your life? 28
And why do you worry about clothes?
Notice how the lilies in the field grow. They don’t wear themselves
out with work, and they don’t spin cloth. 29
But I say to you that even
Solomon in all of his splendor wasn’t dressed like one of these. 30
If
God dresses grass in the field so beautifully, even though it’s alive
today and tomorrow it’s thrown into the furnace, won’t God do much
2. more for you, you people of weak faith? 31
Therefore, don’t worry
and say, ‘What are we going to eat?’ or ‘What are we going to drink?’
or ‘What are we going to wear?’ 32
Gentiles long for all these things.
Your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33
Instead, desire
first and foremost God’s kingdom and God’s righteousness, and all
these things will be given to you as well.
34 Therefore, stop worrying about tomorrow, because tomorrow will
worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
Worrying DOES NOT Prevent Pain
Worry harms our relationship with God, causes physical
discomfort, and destroys joy…
Satan would have you think, “If I had been more concerned
about that, I could have prevented it from happening.”
Worry for many people is a way of trying to control the
situation…
Jesus says, “Do Not Worry, Trust in God”
Do not worry about your life… food… clothing…
God loves you more than the birds … the flowers…
Worry keeps us focused on our own limited resources…
Trust keeps our attention on God’s abundant resources.
Worry happens when I’m on the throne of my life,
when I live in the kingdom of ME. But I trust when God is on
the throne of my life and I live in His Kingdom.
Philippians 4:6-7
6
Don’t be anxious about anything; rather, bring up all of your
requests to God in your prayers and petitions, along with giving
thanks. 7
Then the peace of God that exceeds all understanding will
keep your hearts and minds safe in Christ Jesus.
Two questions that we as followers of Jesus must answer:
1. Who am I? “I am a child of God, one in whom Christ dwells…”
2. Where am I?
“I am living in the unshakable Kingdom of God… inside the
kingdom of God, I am in no danger.”
2 Corinthians 4:7-9
7
But we have this treasure in clay pots so that the awesome power
belongs to God and doesn’t come from us. 8
We are experiencing all
kinds of trouble, but we aren’t crushed. We are confused, but we
aren’t depressed. 9
We are harassed, but we aren’t abandoned. We
are knocked down, but we aren’t knocked out.
For Personal and Group Reflection
3. 1. What does our anxiety/worry tell us about our level of belief in
God?
2. What is the Anxiety level in your life right now?
3. What is the Peace level in your life right now?
4. What might it look like for you to pursue the Peace of God in the
midst of the particular worry that is gripping you?
