2. ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Director, MA in Dispute Resolution at Wayne
State University in Detroit!
Ph.D. from Syracuse University’s Maxwell
School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, PARC!
BA in Conflict Resolution from U.C. Santa

8. CLASSROOM CONFLICT IN
SCHOOLS IS NOT NEW
In Edward Eggleston's (1871/1984) fictional work The
Hoosier Schoolmaster, novice teacher Ralph Hartsook
is warned by the trustee:!
Want to be a school-master, do you? You? Well, what
would you do in Flat Crick deestrick, I'd like to know. Why
the boys have driv off the last two, and licked the one
afore them like blazes....They'd pitch you out of doors,
sonny, neck and heels, afore Christmas. (p. 11) !
So began Hartsook's first year of teaching in a oneroom school in Flat Crick District during the late
1800s. So much for the idyllic past!
10. CRETE MISSION
CRETE works with teacher
education at pre-service and
in-service levels to develop
teachers’ critical skills in
conflict education and
classroom management.
On the web at www.creducation.org
Funded by FIPSE Project P116B040920, JAMS Foundation, Gund Foundation
11. CONFLICT RESOLUTION
CURRICULUM INTEGRATION
A 3-year project in the late 1990s in seven middle
schools across the nation (Louisiana, Maine, Colorado,
Massachusetts, Maryland, North Carolina, and
California)
12. SOME RESEARCH RESULTS
A pretest-posttest control group comparison design in each
state examined the effect of teaching condition (NCIP
experienced teaching, NCIP new teaching, and control
teaching) on over a thousand seventh- and eighth-grade
students’ emotional and conflict competence (conflict
orientation, emotional management, perspective taking, and
hostile attribution) and classroom climate. !
Although the NCIP conditions did not significantly influence
emotional management, it did have positive impacts on
students’ perspective taking and use of problem-solving
strategies. NCIP has extremely strong positive impacts
on classroom climate.
13. SOME RESEARCH RESULTS
Across sites, students in NCIP classes taught by
returning, experienced NCIP teachers consistently
reported more positive climate (overall and in terms of
the dimensions of teacher support, student support,
cohesion, safety, and constructive conflict management) than
students in classes taught by new NCIP teachers. However,
students in either NCIP class perceived a much more
positive climate than students in control classes. !
NCIP impact on classroom climate increased throughout
the year, while perceived climate in control classes
usually became notably more negative throughout the
year.

A FREE TOOL

Called eXe !
Open source tool from New Zealand built on top of
the Firefox browser platform!
We developed our own “theme” to give a consistent
look to the project
25. NOW IN LIBRARIES
WORLDWIDE!
OCLC, the library cooperative that
runs the Worldcat.org online
library, is now integrating the
OAIster collection into their First
Search library database package!
All Libraries with First Search get
this - part of the base package. This
means most colleges and public
libraries...
32. CREDUCATION STATS
CREducation.org
Steady Growth in Website Traffic
builds to 11,000 unique visits monthly
One key indicator of a useful web resource is the number of unique visitors that browse to the site in a given month.
This statistic is a good measure of site growth because it filters out repeat visits by the same user IP address during that month
so as not to overweight visits by one very eager visitor or busy staff member. As the above graph indicates, CREducation.org
has experienced steady growth since launch, reaching a monthly high of more than 11,000 unique visits in November of
2010. In terms of overall content delivered, another useful measure is the number of full pages (featuring combined text and
graphics, not just server “hits”) served. The Conflict Resolution in Education clearinghouse passed a milestone in December of
2010 when it served up its Six Millionth page. As this report is being compiled the site is being moved onto a
brand-new server that will provide faster access speeds and real-time redundant backup to ensure that CREducation.org
can continue to serve the CRETE project and the broader CRE community well into the future.
