5. Feyrabend’s Philosophical Development
Was Feyrabend truly a philosopher?
He personally rejected the label of
philosopher and claimed that he has no specific
philosophical outlook. He called himself ‘an
entertainer’.
Feyrabend presents himself as an interpreter
of early Greek thoughts and a genealogist of
Western rationalism. Throughout his life,
Feyerabend received many diverse labels, some
of which are incompatible and contradict one
another.
Feyrabend gerçekten bir filozof muydu?
Felsefenin etiketini şahsen reddetti ve
kendine özgü bir felsefi bakış açısı olmadığını
iddia etti. Kendisine 'eğlendirici' dedi.
Feyrabend, kendisini erken Yunan
düşüncelerinin tercümanı ve Batı
rasyonalizminin soybilimcisi olarak sunar.
Hayatı boyunca Feyerabend, bazıları
birbirine uymayan ve birbiriyle çelişen birçok
farklı etiket aldı.
506/11/2019
6. He was understood as both a positivist and
post-modernist, a realist (or even super-
realist) and anti-realist, as well as rationalist
and relativist. However, he is widely regarded
and criticized as an epistemological anarchist
and post-modern relativist. He also called
himself a ‘Dadaist’ (artistic anarchy).
In 1987, a prestigious scientific magazine –
Nature labelled Paul Feyrabend as ‘Salvador
Dali’ which means Worst Enemy of Science
of academic philosophy.
Hem pozitivist hem post-modernist, realist
(hatta süper realist) ve anti-realist olduğu
kadar rasyonel ve göreceli olarak anlaşıldı.
Bununla birlikte, epistemolojik anarşist ve
post-modern bir rölativist olarak kabul
edilir ve eleştirilir. Kendisine “Dadaist”
(sanatsal anarşi) dedi.
1987'de prestijli bir bilimsel dergi olan
Nature, Paul Feyrabend'i akademik
felsefenin En Kötü Düşmanı anlamına gelen
“Salvador Dali” olarak nitelendirdi.

7. Feyrabend was undoubtedly one of the
most remarkable and controversial
philosophers of scientific epistemology in
the 20th century. He is also known as 20th
century champion of pluralism and
tolerance.
In essence, he was a pluralist and
iconoclast fighting against all forms of
monism and dogmatism.
‘Anything goes’ is the single most
prominent statement associated with him.
Feyrabend, kuşkusuz, 20. yüzyıldaki en
dikkat çekici ve tartışmalı bilimsel
epistemoloji filozoflarından biriydi. Ayrıca
20. yüzyıl çoğulculuk ve hoşgörü
şampiyonu olarak bilinir.
Özünde, her türlü monizm ve
dogmatizmle mücadele eden çoğulcu ve
ikonok bir savaştı.
‘Her şey yolunda’, kendisiyle ilişkili en
belirgin tek ifadedir.
706/11/2019
8. Paul Feyerabend has a complicated reputation
within the philosophy of science. His most
significant and respectable work ‘Against
Method’ took place during his ‘early’ period
(1975) which can be connected with
‘foundational’ figures in the history of philosophy
of science, such as Kuhn, Popper, and Lakatos.
Feyrabend can be compared with Friedrich
Nietzche, both were ‘wild men’ who often said
provocative things they didn’t really believe but
just to get a reaction from people.
Paul Feyerabend'in bilim felsefesi içinde
karmaşık bir üne sahiptir. Kuhn, Popper ve
Lakatos gibi bilim felsefesi tarihindeki
“temel” rakamlarla bağdaştırılabilecek olan
“erken” döneminde (1975) en önemli ve
saygın çalışması “Againt Metot” çalışması
gerçekleştirildi. Feyrabend, Friedrich
Nietzche ile karşılaştırılabilir, her ikisi de
gerçekten inanmadıkları, ancak insanlardan
bir tepki almak için kışkırtıcı şeyler
söyleyen “vahşi insanlar” dır.
806/11/2019
9. Feyrabend said that my main reason for
writing the book (AM) was ‘humanitarian’,
not intellectual. I wanted to support people,
not to ‘advance knowledge’. Feyerabend
repeatedly affirmed his respect for Mills. His
main thesis of ‘On Liberty’ is that both human
wellbeing and the pursuit of knowledge are
bettered by social diversity. Feyerabend
employs a pluralistic philosophical method and
defends cultural and epistemic diversity
because he identifies them as essential to
ensuring human wellbeing.
Feyrabend, kitabı (AM) yazmak için temel
nedenimin entelektüel değil “insancıl”
olduğunu söyledi. 'Bilgiyi ilerletmek'i değil
insanları desteklemek istedim. Feyerabend,
Mills'e olan saygısını defalarca onayladı.
“Özgürlük Üzerine” adlı ana tezi, hem insan
refahının hem de bilgi arayışının sosyal
çeşitlilik tarafından iyileştirilmiş olmasıdır.
Feyerabend, çoğulcu bir felsefi yöntem
kullanır ve kültürel ve epistemik çeşitliliği
savunur, çünkü bunları, insan refahını
sağlamak için gerekli olarak tanımlar.
906/11/2019
10. Prior to Against Method, Feyerabend was
occupied with various central issues in the
philosophy of science, with a guiding
concern to assert philosophical pluralism
against the monistic, dogmatic, and
conceptually conservative tendencies. Later
Feyerabend’s liberal, pluralist conviction
reflected that human beings flourish best
within a diversity of social and cultural
forms.
Feyerabend can also be credited with
continuing to diversify and ‘pluralise’ the
philosophy of science. Feyerabend is perhaps
best known for his studies of scientific
methodology. Against Method makes both
his interest and his critical stance clear.
Karşı Yönteme Önce, Feyerabend, bilim
felsefesindeki çeşitli merkezi meselelerle
meşguldü, monist, dogmatik ve kavramsal
olarak muhafazakar eğilimlere karşı felsefi
çoğulculuğu öne sürecek bir kaygıyla
karşılandı. Daha sonra Feyerabend’in liberal,
çoğulcu inancı, insanların en iyi sosyal ve
kültürel formlar çeşitliliği içinde geliştiğini
yansıtıyordu.
Feyerabend ayrıca, bilim felsefesini
çeşitlendirmeye ve “çoğullaştırmaya” devam
ederek kredilendirilebilir. Feyerabend belki
de en iyi bilimsel metodoloji çalışmaları için
bilinir. Yönteme karşı hem ilgisini hem de
eleştirel duruşunu netleştiriyor.
1006/11/2019
11. I make my selection in a highly individual way.
Science needs people who are adaptable and
inventive not rigid imitators of ‘established’
behavioural patterns.
Epistemological Anarchism
Seçimimi çok bireysel bir şekilde yapıyorum.
Bilim, uyarlanmış ve yaratıcı olan, “yerleşik”
davranışsal kalıpların katı olmayan taklit
edicilerine ihtiyaç duyar.
1106/11/2019
12. Feyerabend is called an anarchist by the
scientific community because he takes a
critical attitude towards science and
understanding of science .
Feyrabend took radical Kuhn even further
advocating ‘Epistemological Anachism’.
• Science should have no rules at all –
Anything Goes.
Feyrabend claimed that:
To those who look at the rich material provided
by history, it will become clear that there is only
one principle that can be defended under all
circumstances. It is the principle:
anything goes
Feyerabend'e bilim topluluğu tarafından
anarşist denir, çünkü bilime ve bilim
anlayışına karşı eleştirel bir tavır alır.
Feyrabend, “Epistemolojik Anakizm” i
savunan radikal Kuhn'u daha da ileri götürdü.
Bilimin hiçbir kuralı olmamalıdır - Her şey Kabul.
Feyrabend iddia etti:
Tarihin sağladığı zengin malzemeye bakanlar
için, her koşulda savunulabilecek tek bir ilkenin
olduğu anlaşılacaktır. Bu prensiptir:
her şey gider
1206/11/2019
13. Anything goes is not a
principle I hold
but the terrified exclamation
of a rationalist who takes a
closer look at history
Her şey yolunda benim
tuttuğum bir ilke değil
ama tarihe daha yakından
bakan rasyonalist bir
korkutucu ünlem
1306/11/2019
14. His basic argument: Science should not limit
itself to any particular set of method. Name any
method, any set of rules you want.
Rather than striving for objectivity, science
needs to be subjective.
Science, like art, is a form of human creativity,
and should have no limits or bounds.
“Scientists are like architects who build
buildings of different sizes and different shapes
and who can be judged only after the event, i.e.
only after they have finished their structure. It
may stand up, it may fall down -nobody knows”.
The greatest scientists are always the ones that
broke the rules.
Temel argümanı: Bilim kendisini herhangi
bir belirli yöntemle sınırlandırmamalıdır.
Herhangi bir yöntemi, istediğiniz kural
kümesini adlandırın.
Nesnellik için çabalamak yerine, bilimin
öznel olması gerekir.
Bilim, sanat gibi, bir insan yaratıcılığının
şeklidir ve sınırları veya sınırları
olmamalıdır.
“Bilim adamları, farklı büyüklüklerde ve farklı
şekillerde binalar inşa eden ve yalnızca
olaydan sonra, yani yalnızca yapılarını
tamamladıktan sonra yargılanabilecek
mimarlar gibidir. Ayağa kalkabilir, düşebilir -
kimse bilmiyor ”.
En büyük bilim insanları her zaman
kuralları ihlal edenlerdir.
1406/11/2019
15. Feyrabend agreed with Khun about the
‘incommensurability of paradigms’.
• Feyrabend says that perception isn’t
‘theory laden’, it’s theory determined.
Theory tells us what we can see, if we
don’t have any right theory, we can see
the world by completely different way.
In ‘Structure of Scientific Revolution’,
Kuhn says: how a paradigm shift literally
the whole world changes. In contrast,
Feyrabend says: ‘Everything is about how
you see the world changes’.
Feyrabend and Kuhn
Feyrabend, Khun ile “paradigmaların
uyumsuzluğu” hakkında hemfikirdi.
Feyrabend, algının “teorik yüklü”
olmadığını, teorik olarak belirlediğini
söylüyor. Teori bize ne göreceğimizi
söyler, herhangi bir doğru teoriye sahip
değilsek, dünyayı tamamen farklı bir
şekilde görebiliriz.
“Bilimsel Devrimin Yapısı” nda, Kuhn
şöyle diyor: Bir paradigmanın
kelimenin tam anlamıyla nasıl
değiştiğini değiştiriyor. Buna karşılık,
Feyrabend şöyle diyor: “Her şey
dünyanın değişimini nasıl
gördüğünüzle ilgili”.
1506/11/2019
16. Kuhn minimizes method and trusts the
Scientific Community.
Feyrabend eliminates method because he
trusts Scientific Geniuses.
Lakatos criticized Kuhn for making science
too chaotic, making science all about Mob
Psychology whereas Feyrabned thinks that
Kuhn is actually a champion of drudgery.
By defending ‘normal science’ Kuhn made
science drudge work, something for
thoughtless drones.
Kuhn metodu küçültür ve Bilimsel
Topluluğa güvenir.
Feyrabend yöntemi elimine
ediyor çünkü Scientific Geniuses'a
güveniyor.
Lakatos, Kuhn'u bilimi çok kaotik
yapmak, tümüyle Mob Psikolojisi
hakkında yapmak için eleştirirken,
Feyrabned, Kuhn'un aslında bir
angarya şampiyonu olduğunu
düşünüyor.
“Normal bilimi” savunan Kuhn,
düşüncesiz dronlar için bir şey olan
bilimi zorla çalıştırdı.
1606/11/2019
17. Science is just one of many alternatives
people have invented to deal with their
environment. It is not unique, not reliable,
and powerful enough to be left alone.
Imposition of science could be dangerous.
‘there must be a separation of state and science
just as there is a separation between state and
religious institutions, and science should be
taught as one view among many and not as the
one and only road to truth and reality’.
Feyrabend and Science
Bilim, insanların çevreleriyle başa çıkmak
için icat ettiği birçok alternatiften sadece
biri. Eşsiz, güvenilir ve yalnız bırakılacak
kadar güçlü değil. Bilimin dayatılması
tehlikeli olabilir.
“Devlet ile din kurumları arasında bir ayrım
olduğu gibi bir devlet ve bilim ayrımı olmalı
ve bilime, gerçeğe ve gerçeğe giden tek ve
tek yol değil, birçoğu arasında tek bir bakış
olarak öğretilmelidir.”
1706/11/2019
18. Science is not a reality that is discovered
and unfolded on its own in the world, but is a
complex activity that is composed of
conscious and unconscious decisions and
preferences of researchers and social
conditions, open to various influences,
including human and irrational obsessions and
tendencies with its versatile spiritual and
cultural life.
Procedures that paid off in the past may
create havoc when imposed on the future.
Bilim, dünyada kendi başına keşfedilen
ve açılan bir gerçeklik değil, insan ve
irrasyonel takıntı ve eğilimleri içeren
çeşitli etkilere açık, araştırmacıların ve
sosyal koşulların bilinçli ve bilinçsiz
kararları ve tercihlerinden oluşan
karmaşık bir aktivitedir. çok yönlü
manevi ve kültürel hayatı ile.
Geçmişte ödenen prosedürler
geleceğe uygulandığında büyük zararlar
verebilir.
1806/11/2019
19. Professionals dealing with the ecological,
social and medical parts of developmental aid
have by now realized that the imposition of
‘rational’ or ‘scientific’ procedures, though
occasionally beneficial (removal of some
parasites and infectious diseases), can lead to
serious material, health and spiritual
problems.
Gelişimsel yardımın ekolojik, sosyal ve tıbbi
bölümleriyle ilgilenen profesyoneller, şimdiye
kadar faydalı olsalar da (rasyonel 'veya'
bilimsel 'prosedürlerin uygulanmasının ciddi
maddi, sağlığa yol açabileceğini anladılar. ve
manevi problemler.
1906/11/2019
20. Feyrabend is not oppose to science. In
fact, he is very much a champion of
science.
I am not against a science so understood.
Such a science is one of the most wonderful
inventions of the human mind. But I am
against ideologies that use the name of
science for cultural murder.
He does think that science has
dangerous and epistemically problematic
aspects. There is a kind of dogmatic
arrogance that can come along with
science with people who think they fully
understand the reality and anyone who
doesn’t see it, ignorant and foolish.
Feyrabend bilime karşı değildir. Aslında,
o çok fazla bir bilim şampiyonu.
Ben böyle anlaşılan bir bilime karşı değilim.
Böyle bir bilim, insan aklının en harika
icatlarından biridir. Ama ben bilim adını
kültürel cinayet için kullanan ideolojilere
karşıyım.
Bilimin tehlikeli ve epistemik olarak
problemli yönleri olduğunu düşünüyor.
Bilimi, gerçeği tam olarak anladıklarını,
görmeyen, cahil ve aptal olanları tam
olarak anladıklarını düşünen insanlarla
bir araya getirebilecek bir tür dogmatik
kibir vardır.
2006/11/2019
21. Scientific successes cannot be explained
in a simple way .
Science is successful and that it is
successful because it uses uniform
procedures. The first part of the assertion
(science is always successful) is not true, if
by ‘Science’ we mean things done by
scientists - there are lots of failures also.
The second part - that successes are due to
uniform procedures-is not true because
there are no such procedures.
Bilimsel başarılar basit bir şekilde
açıklanamaz.
Bilim başarılı ve başarılı çünkü üniform
bir prosedür kullanıyor. İddianın ilk kısmı
(bilim her zaman başarılıdır) doğru
değildir, eğer “Bilim” ile bilim adamlarının
yaptıklarını kastediyorsak - ayrıca birçok
başarısızlık da vardır. İkinci kısım -
başarıların tekdüze prosedürlerden
kaynaklandığı - doğru değil çünkü böyle
bir prosedür yok.
2106/11/2019
22. Newtonian Theory
(an example of falsification)
Newton’s theory of physics ‘Newtonian
mechanics’was dominant for 250 years until it
was disproven by Albert Einstein, is a kind of
‘epistemic humility’. It should make us say
‘no matter how confident we are in our
theories’. It is always possible that we might be
wrong.
o Don’t take yourself so seriously
o Don’t think that you are the end-all be-all
and your ideas are the best recognized
o No matter how confident you are
Newton Teorisi (tahrifat örneği)
Newton’un fizik teorisi ‘Newton mekaniği’,
Albert Einstein’ın ispat edene kadar 250 yıl
boyunca egemen oldu, bir tür “epistemik
tevazu”. “Teorilerimize ne kadar güvenirsek
önemseyelim” demeliyiz. Yanlış olabileceğimiz
her zaman mümkün.
o Kendini çok ciddiye alma
o Hepinizin sonun hepiniz olduğunu ve
düşüncelerinizin en iyi tanınan olduğunu
düşünmeyin
o Ne kadar emin olursanız olun
2206/11/2019
23. Tolerance for Non-Science
Again Feyrabend wants to make two points:
First, that science can stand on its own feet and
does not need any help from rationalists,
secular humanists, Marxists and similar
religious movements; and,
secondly, that non-scientific cultures,
procedures and assumptions can also stand on
their own feet and should be allowed to do so,
if this is the wish of their representatives.
Bilim Dışı Hoşgörü
Yine Feyrabend iki noktaya değinmek istiyor:
Birincisi, bu bilim kendi ayakları üzerinde
durabilir ve rasyonalistlerden, laik
hümanistlerden, Marksistlerden ve benzeri dini
hareketlerden herhangi bir yardıma ihtiyaç
duymaz; ve,
ikincisi, bilimsel olmayan kültürlerin,
prosedürlerin ve varsayımların kendi ayakları
üzerinde de durabilecekleri ve temsilcilerinin
isteği buysa, bunu yapmasına izin verilmesi
gerekir.
2306/11/2019
24. Feyrabend was a huge admirer of Galileo.
o Standing up the tyrannical church in defence of
his ideas against its dogmatism.
Today science has become the new
church, oppressing all those who disagree
with its conclusions.
o Science now suppresses creativity and
imagination.
o Its insists not only that everyone believes the
same things but also thinks in the same ways.
Science can be intolerant of dissent as any
religion.
o The self-righteous, arrogance of many scientists
is a threat to human freedom of thought.
Free-minded creative people should resist
this scientific monopoly.
Science and Religious Dogmatism
Feyrabend, Galileo'nun büyük bir hayranıydı.
Onun dogmatizmine karşı fikirlerini savunmada
zalim kiliseyi ayağa kaldırın.
Bugün bilim, sonuçları ile aynı fikirde
olmayan herkese baskı yapan yeni kilise haline
geldi.
tekele direnmeli.
2406/11/2019
25. First World Science
Feyerabend claims that science is the
monopoly of a particular geography and calls
the current understanding of science in the
world “First World Science”. According to
him, the First World science is the science that
was born out of the scientific revolution in
Europe and is currently taught in universities
and technology institutions around the world.
This is accompanied by an ideology that
suggests that the so-called rationalism is
produced in a systematic manner and renders
all other traditions null and void. Thus,
sciences are produced only by a scientific
method that tells us what the world looks like
and how we can change it to suit our needs.
Feyerabend, bilimin belirli bir coğrafyanın
tekeli olduğunu iddia ediyor ve dünyadaki
mevcut bilim anlayışını “Birinci Dünya
Bilimi” olarak adlandırıyor. Ona göre, Birinci
Dünya bilimi, Avrupa'daki bilimsel
devrimden doğan ve şu anda dünyadaki
üniversitelerde ve teknoloji kurumlarında
öğretilen bilimdir.
Buna rasyonalizmin sistematik bir şekilde
üretildiğini ve diğer tüm gelenekleri boş ve
geçersiz kıldığını gösteren bir ideoloji eşlik
ediyor. Böylece bilimler, bize dünyanın neye
benzediğini ve ihtiyaçlarımıza göre nasıl
değiştirebileceğimizi söyleyen bilimsel bir
yöntemle üretilir.
2506/11/2019
26. It states that Non-Western sciences, which were
developed in opposition to the First World science,
were abolished in many places. The reason for their
eradication is not based on the failure of these
sciences, but on the greater military power of the
societies applying the First World science.
Westerners have refused to study, let alone refute
the science of indigenous societies. According to
Feyerabend, if the First World Science was
accepted, it was not because it produced a better
life for everyone, but because it produced better
weapons.
He states that each culture and every nation can
establish a science that meets its specific needs.
• Birinci Dünya bilimine karşı
geliştirilen Batılı olmayan bilimlerin
birçok yerde ortadan kaldırıldığını
belirtir. Onların ortadan
kaldırılmasının nedeni, bu bilimlerin
başarısızlığına değil, Birinci Dünya
bilimini uygulayan toplumların daha
fazla askeri gücüne dayanıyor.
• Batılılar, çalışmayı reddetti, yerli
toplulukların bilimini reddetti.
Feyerabend'e göre, Birinci Dünya
Bilimi kabul edilirse, herkes için daha
iyi bir yaşam ürettiği için değil, daha
iyi silahlar ürettiği içindi.
• Her kültürün ve her milletin kendine
özgü ihtiyaçlarını karşılayan bir bilim
kurabileceğini belirtir.
2606/11/2019
27. Feyrabend likes Galileo because he has
rebel spirit. Galileo was an anarchist who
created a new way of describing the world.
He used observation to overcome
religious dogma
Observation, theory and scientific
community opposed Galileo but all were
WRONG except Galileo.
Galileo doesn’t just follow observation
but it also challenges observation and
proved that the way he is looking at the
world is RIGHT.
Feyrabend called it as ‘best science’ and
what makes science great is revolutionary
spirit of people like Galileo.
Galileo as an Anarchist
Feyrabend, Galileo'yu sever çünkü asi bir
ruhu vardır. Galileo, dünyayı tarif etmenin
yeni bir yolunu yaratan bir anarşistti.
Dini dogmanın üstesinden gelmek için
gözlem kullandı
Gözlem, teori ve bilim topluluğu
Galileo'ya karşı çıktı ama hepsi Galileo
dışında YANLIŞ idi.
Galileo sadece gözlemi takip etmekle
kalmaz aynı zamanda gözlemi zorlar ve
dünyaya bakış şeklinin SAĞ olduğunu
kanıtlamıştır.
Feyrabend bunu “en iyi bilim” olarak
nitelendirdi ve bilimi harika yapan şey,
Galileo gibi insanların devrimci ruhu.
2706/11/2019
28. Einstein, before the testing of ‘relativity’
said that ‘he knew his theory was true
because it was so beautiful’.
o Feyrabend embraces his approach to science.
A beautiful theory is worth more than a
plausible one.
o Our sense of what’s plausible isn’t very reliable.
o Even implausible theories can be helpful in
science.
Competition between theories can reveal
strengths and weaknesses that we otherwise
wouldn’t notice.
o So scientists should generate new theories all the
time, without regard to plausibility (why wait for
Kuhn ‘crisis’?).
o Even if they’re wrong, they may lead to insights.
The Aesthetics of Science and Scientific Pluralism
Einstein, 'görelilik' denemesinden önce,
'teorisinin doğru olduğunu biliyordu, çünkü
çok güzeldi' dedi.
Feyrabend bilime olan yaklaşımını benimsiyor.
Güzel bir teori, mantıklı olandan daha
değerlidir.
Mantıklı olanı anlamamız çok güvenilir değil.
Etkili olmayan teoriler bile bilimde yardımcı
olabilir.
Teoriler arasındaki rekabet, aksi takdirde
farketmeyeceğimiz güçlü ve zayıf yönleri
ortaya çıkarabilir.
Öyleyse bilim adamları, olasılıkları dikkate
almadan her zaman yeni teoriler üretmelidir
(neden Kuhn ‘krizini wait beklemelisiniz?).
Hatalı olsalar bile içgörülere yol açabilirler.
2806/11/2019
