Annotated Bibliography
Bidwell, Allie. “Second-Guessing Online Education.” U.S.
News Digital Weekly, vol. 5, no. 42, 18 Oct. 2013, p. 8.
EBSCOhost.
In the article “Second-Guessing Online Education” Bidwell
discusses others views on online education. This article’s main
point is to discuss what American’s think about online
education. The article talks about how people see the value in
online learning but question the quality. Bidwell states
American’s agree that online education offers the same value
and format of traditional education but doubt the true worth of
an online education and degree. Adults believe there is a lower
quality in instructions and instructors in the online education
environment. She includes surveys taken by more than one
thousand adults. The surveyed adults realize the flexibility that
online classes have to offer and they believe there is a higher
student success rate if the student has the option of flexible
schooling. The article also includes a survey about how
employers prefer a traditional degree instead of an online
degree. The article closes with vouching for online education
and degrees because it is still a very new untraditional way to
learn.
After reading this article, it will be very beneficial for my final
essay. It is a very complex article and includes both pros and
cons of online learning. It includes the public and employers’
views on online education and degrees. I can use this article to
share the benefits of online learning and why it has the same or
higher quality than a traditional on-campus education. This
article will help me support my thesis and can also aide in
creating a counter argument.
Callaway, Stephen K. “Implications of Online Learning:
Measuring Student Satisfaction and Learning for Online and
Traditional Students.” Insights to a Changing World Journal,
no. 2, June 2012, pp. 67-94. EBSCOhost.
The article “Implications of Online Learning: Measuring
Student Satisfaction and Learning for Online and Traditional
Students” explains how the internet has transformed higher
education and how traditional universities are adapting to the
new challenges of online programs. The main point of this
article is to express how online education is growing and why it
is becoming popular among college students and intuitions.
Callaway includes that cost and convenience are important
incentives for students who chose to do online learning. He
explains how online learning doesn’t appeal to all college
students. He states that most public institutions and universities
offer some form of online education. He includes how the
percentage of online education enrollment is rapidly increasing
every year. The study the article revolves around shows that
college students are satisfied with the convenience and quality
of online learning. But the shocking part that the study found
was that students were more satisfied with the quality of
learning more than the convenience.
This article can be used to explain how online learning has
transformed education. I can use the information about how
students find more quality in online learning rather than in a
traditional in-class setting. I can also use this article to
showcase how online education is rapidly growing and
becoming a new normal for obtaining a degree. Overall this
article will help my final essay and incorporating my similar
viewpoints about online learning.
McCurry, David. “Online degrees offer a path to graduation.”
Greenville News; Greenville, S.C. 17 Jul. 2016: E3. eLibrary.
In the article “Online degrees offer a path to graduation”
McCurry discusses how there is more than one way to graduate
with an associate’s and bachelor’s degree. Universities are now
expanding to evening and weekend classes and online degree
programs. There are many new ways to complete your education
if you do fit the traditional college student. Online education is
slowly evolving and becoming more advanced and contains the
equal value of the traditional in-class courses. This article’s
main focus is to inform the reader that there is more than one
way to obtain your degree and the personal gains from online
education. It is okay if you do not fit the traditional 18-year-old
college student. Colleges are becoming more considerate and
flexible than ever. Colleges are more understanding of students
that have finances that have to be taken care when being a
college student. This means convenience for learning
opportunities that fit with their work and life obligations.
McCurry also includes the personal benefits of a student when
taking an online course. Students who are scared to participate
in traditional classroom discussions can participate in a more
intimate way when taking an online course. They can participate
by writing and submitting their thoughts through a screen. He
says online learning isn’t for everyone because you must have
good time-management and self-motivation.
This article can be used to help my paper by including all the
new ways of education and how online courses are evolving and
meeting the face-to-face course standards. I can use and relate
to the section where he explains how students can participate
through a screen and not feel the pressure when expressing
opinions because I am one of those students.
English 1301 Essay #3:
Annotated Bibliography
Essay #3 is an information gathering exercise.Three sources
should be placed in works cited form and briefly summarized.
After each summary, you must also include a brief commentary
of how you might use that source.
Though you are only required to have three sources for the
bibliography, you will need four in your essay. This is just a
start to your research, and I hope you will look for and read
more than three sources. These might be the sources that you
use for your essay, but they don’t have to be. Sometimes you
realize that the sources you find at the beginning of your
research don’t necessarily work with what information you need
to provide for your argument. This is part of good research.
You need to gain a breadth of knowledge about your subject.
This essay is very similar to what you wrote for Essay 1:
Summary and Response. You are summarizing an article and
then responding to it. Just as you did before, you can agree or
disagree with the information you read. For example, you can
ask if it was convincing information. Why was it convincing?
Was the evidence presented in a logical manner? How was the
article organized? Did they have statistics or stories to back up
their claims? Etc. Keep in mind that you are describing THIS
source – NOT the topic itself.
But you must also go further than this kind of response, you
MUST SHOW how you will use this information for your own
argument. Is it useful information to you and what your
researched argument will be? What parts could you paraphrase
as support for your own argument? Would you use any direct
quotes from here? What parts would be useful for a
counterargument?
Steps to complete this assignment:
Research
1. Go the our class’s library page and choose which database
you want to start researching with.
2. Use search terms to find articles that might be useful to you.
If you aren’t finding anything with those search terms, change it
up.
3. Find at least three articles to read.
4. READ the articles and take notes about what the main idea is.
Summary
5. Summarize each of these articles in about 5-7 sentences.
6. A summary of each article should include the following:
· the identity of the writer
· the implied or explicit audience
· what kind of article it is – a newspaper article? A scholarly
research paper? Etc.
· the main point or claim
· the kinds of evidence used to support the claim
· how the author presents the information
7. Based on your research come up with what you think your
basic argument will be for your research essay.
Response/Analysis
8. Evaluate the article: is it well-written? Does it have a thesis?
Is it trying to convince you of something? Does it succeed?
What kind of evidence do they use? Is this a reliable source?
9. Question the article: are you left with any unexplained
questions? Is there something you wish the article explained
that it didn’t?
10. Explain how this article will help your argument for your
own researched argument essay: which quotes or examples do
you plan to use? Does this agree with your argument? Or could
pieces be used as a counterargument? (look in folder 4.6 if you
don’t know what that is)
Requirements:
· Each source should be from a reputable publication found in
one of El Centro College’s Library Databases
· Each annotation should be at least two paragraphs, consisting
of your summary of the article and your response to it. Each
annotation should be at least half a page.
· Three MLA citations.
· The OWL Purdue site and El Centro’s MLA information will
be helpful:
·
http://libguides.elcentrocollege.edu/c.php?g=198421&p=381436
7
· With your assignment, you must also turn in these items:
· All three of your sources as PDFs or other text documents.
· One completely filled out Book InSights Template.
Tips:
· Most of the work here will be unseen. That work is the
finding, reading and understanding of your sources.
· While it is not hard, it is VERY time consuming, so don’t
assume you can whip right through it.
· Use the InSight Template to take notes for each of your
sources. This will be SOOO valuable to you when you are
starting to piece together your essay. Think of this is a pre-
writing exercise for your
· Be sure to alphabetize the articles by author
· Do not use sources published before 2010
· Please look at the samples before you begin this essay. They
will give you a sense of how your own document should be
formatted.

  • 4. Professor Howard ENGL 1301, Sec. 53401 September 26, 2017 Annotated Bibliography Bidwell, Allie. “Second-Guessing Online Education.” U.S. News Digital Weekly, vol. 5, no. 42, 18 Oct. 2013, p. 8. EBSCOhost. In the article “Second-Guessing Online Education” Bidwell discusses others views on online education. This article’s main point is to discuss what American’s think about online education. The article talks about how people see the value in online learning but question the quality. Bidwell states American’s agree that online education offers the same value and format of traditional education but doubt the true worth of an online education and degree. Adults believe there is a lower quality in instructions and instructors in the online education environment. She includes surveys taken by more than one thousand adults. The surveyed adults realize the flexibility that online classes have to offer and they believe there is a higher student success rate if the student has the option of flexible schooling. The article also includes a survey about how employers prefer a traditional degree instead of an online degree. The article closes with vouching for online education and degrees because it is still a very new untraditional way to learn. After reading this article, it will be very beneficial for my final essay. It is a very complex article and includes both pros and cons of online learning. It includes the public and employers’ views on online education and degrees. I can use this article to share the benefits of online learning and why it has the same or higher quality than a traditional on-campus education. This article will help me support my thesis and can also aide in creating a counter argument. Callaway, Stephen K. “Implications of Online Learning:
  • 5. Measuring Student Satisfaction and Learning for Online and Traditional Students.” Insights to a Changing World Journal, no. 2, June 2012, pp. 67-94. EBSCOhost. The article “Implications of Online Learning: Measuring Student Satisfaction and Learning for Online and Traditional Students” explains how the internet has transformed higher education and how traditional universities are adapting to the new challenges of online programs. The main point of this article is to express how online education is growing and why it is becoming popular among college students and intuitions. Callaway includes that cost and convenience are important incentives for students who chose to do online learning. He explains how online learning doesn’t appeal to all college students. He states that most public institutions and universities offer some form of online education. He includes how the percentage of online education enrollment is rapidly increasing every year. The study the article revolves around shows that college students are satisfied with the convenience and quality of online learning. But the shocking part that the study found was that students were more satisfied with the quality of learning more than the convenience. This article can be used to explain how online learning has transformed education. I can use the information about how students find more quality in online learning rather than in a traditional in-class setting. I can also use this article to showcase how online education is rapidly growing and becoming a new normal for obtaining a degree. Overall this article will help my final essay and incorporating my similar viewpoints about online learning. McCurry, David. “Online degrees offer a path to graduation.” Greenville News; Greenville, S.C. 17 Jul. 2016: E3. eLibrary. In the article “Online degrees offer a path to graduation” McCurry discusses how there is more than one way to graduate with an associate’s and bachelor’s degree. Universities are now expanding to evening and weekend classes and online degree

Online education is slowly evolving and becoming more advanced and contains the equal value of the traditional in-class courses. This article’s main focus is to inform the reader that there is more than one way to obtain your degree and the personal gains from online education. It is okay if you do not fit the traditional 18-year-old college student. Colleges are becoming more considerate and flexible than ever. Colleges are more understanding of students that have finances that have to be taken care when being a college student. This means convenience for learning opportunities that fit with their work and life obligations. McCurry also includes the personal benefits of a student when taking an online course. Students who are scared to participate in traditional classroom discussions can participate in a more intimate way when taking an online course. They can participate by writing and submitting their thoughts through a screen. He says online learning isn’t for everyone because you must have good time-management and self-motivation. This article can be used to help my paper by including all the new ways of education and how online courses are evolving and meeting the face-to-face course standards. I can use and relate to the section where he explains how students can participate through a screen and not feel the pressure when expressing opinions because I am one of those students. English 1301 Essay #3: Annotated Bibliography Essay #3 is an information gathering exercise.Three sources should be placed in works cited form and briefly summarized. After each summary, you must also include a brief commentary of how you might use that source. Though you are only required to have three sources for the bibliography, you will need four in your essay. This is just a
  • 7. start to your research, and I hope you will look for and read more than three sources. These might be the sources that you use for your essay, but they don’t have to be. Sometimes you realize that the sources you find at the beginning of your research don’t necessarily work with what information you need to provide for your argument. This is part of good research. You need to gain a breadth of knowledge about your subject. This essay is very similar to what you wrote for Essay 1: Summary and Response. You are summarizing an article and then responding to it. Just as you did before, you can agree or disagree with the information you read. For example, you can ask if it was convincing information. Why was it convincing? Was the evidence presented in a logical manner? How was the article organized? Did they have statistics or stories to back up their claims? Etc. Keep in mind that you are describing THIS source – NOT the topic itself. But you must also go further than this kind of response, you MUST SHOW how you will use this information for your own argument. Is it useful information to you and what your researched argument will be? What parts could you paraphrase as support for your own argument? Would you use any direct quotes from here? What parts would be useful for a counterargument? Steps to complete this assignment: Research 1. Go the our class’s library page and choose which database you want to start researching with. 2. Use search terms to find articles that might be useful to you. If you aren’t finding anything with those search terms, change it up. 3. Find at least three articles to read.
  • 8. 4. READ the articles and take notes about what the main idea is. Summary 5. Summarize each of these articles in about 5-7 sentences. 6. A summary of each article should include the following: · the identity of the writer · the implied or explicit audience · what kind of article it is – a newspaper article? A scholarly research paper? Etc. · the main point or claim · the kinds of evidence used to support the claim · how the author presents the information 7. Based on your research come up with what you think your basic argument will be for your research essay. Response/Analysis 8. Evaluate the article: is it well-written? Does it have a thesis? Is it trying to convince you of something? Does it succeed? What kind of evidence do they use? Is this a reliable source? 9. Question the article: are you left with any unexplained questions? Is there something you wish the article explained that it didn’t? 10. Explain how this article will help your argument for your own researched argument essay: which quotes or examples do you plan to use? Does this agree with your argument? Or could pieces be used as a counterargument? (look in folder 4.6 if you don’t know what that is) Requirements:
