A PPT on the:
(1) ill-effects of fire crackers on health ,
(2) noise and air pollution caused by the use of fire crackers.
(3) legislation in Maharashtra,India, related to firecrackers.
2. •Firecrackers appear to
be the perfect way to
celebrate an occasion.
•Festivals such as
Deepavali would
appear lacking
without them.
3. Unfortunately, not all
aspects of firecrackers
are beautiful.
•Heavy metals and other
chemicals contained
in firecrackers have serious
and irreversible effects
on human health.
4. •Heavy metals are
added to crackers to
give them their
beautiful colours and
each metal produces a
different un-beautiful
effect.
5. • For example, aluminium
shavings produce brilliant
silvery sparks.
• Copper produces green light.
• Selenium and Cadmium give
red sparks.
All these are released into
the atmosphere in the form of
very tiny particles when
crackers are burst.
6. A few moments of
enjoyment watching
spectacular
light and sound displays
from firecrackers can
cause you to ingest
metals such as :
Aluminium and Cadmium,
7. which may be absorbed
through the skin, inhaled,
or find their way into the
food chain by
sedimentation
into the soil and
water bodies.
8. •A World Health
Organization Report,
published in 2007,
states, “ the health
effects of some heavy
metals are dangerous
to human health”.
9. •Metals such as lead,
cadmium etc. can
affect the nervous
system and brain and
have been shown to
cause multiple
neurological diseases
and cancer.
10. Links between heavy metals
and diseases such as:
diabetes,
asthma,
heart disease ;
have also been
established beyond doubt.
11. • Limited air pollution studies
conducted by the Maharashtra
Pollution Control Board jointly
with Awaaz Foundation& lIT
Bombay.
• Studies of water bodies in
Mumbai, a report from
Dr. Hasnain Patel,
Vice Chairman, International
Board of Clinical Metal
Toxicology,
12. showed heavy metals in
air samples and water
samples in large
concentrations,
the high percentage of
affected people,
including children, is truly
Shocking!
13. • It is time citizens of
Mumbai wake up to these
realities and stop using
highly toxic firecrackers in
their celebrations, which
have irreversible effects on
our own health and the
health of our children.
