Subject: WSJ Energy Report: Wake up to China taking ORNL's Molten Salt Reactor; Rare Earth Elements and Climate
Dear Ms. Harder and Panelists,
I wanted to write to you regarding your recent Energy Report November 24, 2014. I am copying a diverse mix of environmentally minded proponents of Nuclear Power; especially the sidetracked design of Oak Ridge National Lab's Molten Salt Reactor (MSR). With the change in the US Senate following the Mid Term Election, it is our hope we can offer an across the aisle win win for the US in Energy and strategic materials in regards to the growing threat from China and Pollution. Clean safe MSRs can change the economy for the US and the clean up the world’s air if allowed to be developed here in the US by the US Government. If the US doesn’t change course, it will be left behind this century by China. A couple of points I would like to make regarding your Energy Features:
 Where is Energy Policy Heading
o Germany shut down nuclear and is building coal fired plants, UK & Google are finding severe limitations of Renewables being able to supply the world’s energy needs.
 http://spectrum.ieee.org/energy/renewables/what-it-would-really-take-to- reverse-climate-change
 http://www.forbes.com/sites/realspin/2013/03/14/germanys-green-energy- disaster-a-cautionary-tale-for-world-leaders/
o Clean cheap electricity lifts all boats and it is needed globally for power and desalination and reduces death from pollution.
o Nuclear Power has suffered by its use of the wrong type of reactor design the Pressurized Water Reactor vs. the Molten Salt Reactor; AEC 1962 report to JFK on Civilian Nuclear Power. http://energyfromthorium.com/2011/03/20/1962-aec- report/
o Green Energy’s waste stream of Rare Earth Elements tosses away yearly enough of the Super Fuel Thorium that can power the entire planet using MSR reactors.
 Can the US Government Revive Nuclear Power?
o Market how safe Nuclear Power is and how much safer the MSR is to the public.
 http://nextbigfuture.com/2008/03/deaths-per-twh-for-all-energy- sources.html
o Develop Molten Salt Reactors because:
 Inherent Safety of its low pressure molten fuel, inert Fluoride mix and freeze plug passive drain.
 Can be built on assemble lines due to no need for a pressure dome.
 Due to its safety and scalable design, it is a great fit for a distributed grid.
 For the $1 Billion a day spent on climate/green energy worldwide, the world can add 200 GWs yearly of clean emission free 24/7 power with MSRs, while burning up nuclear waste & using waste of Thorium from REE plants.
o Our Dept. of Energy is giving the keys to China of Oak Ridge National Labs’ Molten Salt Reactor
 http://web.ornl.gov/sci/ees/cbes/Collaborations/USDA/ORNL_USDA_Coordination_Status_final.pdf
o Our DoE in under NDA/MOU with China while suppressing any US firm with working with ORNL on MSRs.
o China will wind up owning the IP for MSRs paid for my US Taxpayer research in the 1950s to 1970s.
o NRC and DoE need to get out of the way, streamline MSR & Thorium research & development in the US.
o Investigate the illegal collusion between ORNL and China transfers of Dual Use Nuclear Tech.
 Does Clean Coal have a Future?
o Part of the ORNL/DoE/China deal has collusion regarding transferring Molten Salt Clean Coal technology
 China Rare Earth Elements Monopoly
o We need to solve the Thorium problem with Rare Earth mining in the US http://youtu.be/tyqYP6f66Mw
o US National Rare Earth Element Act in the Senate and the House simply allows the US to take back the REE market back to the US and allow for responsible control of Thorium.
 The next Thorium Energy conference will be in Palo Alto, June 3, 4. http://www.thoriumenergyalliance.com/index.html
M. Harder and your panelists, I hope you and the WSJ can attend the Conference June 3-4 in 2015.
Thank you,
Walter Horsting, Principal
