Shivappa Nayaka was a notable ruler of the Keladi Nayaka Kingdom from 1645-1660. The Keladi Nayakas were successors to the Vijayanagara Empire and built a niche kingdom in coastal and hill regions of Karnataka before succumbing to the Kingdom of Mysore in 1763. Shivappa Nayaka introduced a new tax system called "Sist" and commissioned notable temples in the styles of local South Indian dynasties, including the Aghoreshwara temple at Ikkeri and Rameshwara temple at Keladi. These temples blended Vijayanagara and local styles, featuring pillars depicting mythological figures.
