2. Where did they get their first ideas
from and who helped them?
They believed there was a gap in the market for good
quality and fun gift and home ware items at great
prices. They did not have any help from anyone with
the ideas they created the concept themselves from
logos to store layout…etc.
3. Their first trials and where they got
their money for it?
They opened their first store in Hastings,
Hawke's bay and it was an instant success with
inquiry's for franchises in the first month. They
started the business by borrowing the money
from the bank.
4. Their first customers and feedback
they got?
The customers were all different ages and
all commented on the great ranges and
prices, and seemed very excited.
5. Problems in the process and how
they fixed them?
They didn’t really have an problems as such but it
was always hard trying to find new stores, as they
grew, in the right location, with the right rent, and
also communicating with staff in other store
locations. They fixed them by deciding to choose
locations and interview staff themselves. Then
they employed a area manager to take care of
staff at other locations and visit regularly.
6. Who were their clients and what do
their products look like?
Mainly women aged between 16 and 80 who
also always sent their husbands in as well, haha.
The products were fun, very colourful and often
New Zealand influenced. They also sold a range
of high quality oak dining furniture which they
had the sole rights to New Zealand for.
7. Any future plans or experiements
they want to do?
Before they decided to close, they grew
the business and went from buying from
local suppliers to importing approximately
100 containers a year out of China, which
gave them better prices to pass on to the
end customer.
