 : “THE MOVEMENT
POETRY” refers to
the literary group of
poets of 1950’s
This group was
formed in 1950’s
which consisted of
renown poets of that
era..
A literal group MOVEMENT was formed in
1950’s as a reaction the neoromanticism of
earlier British writers.
The first poem was drafted in year 1954. the
group objective was to prove the importance
of English poetry over the new modernist
poetries. In this period the new writer
emerged as a reaction of the poems of 1930’s
and 1940’s which has its own brand of
sensibility . The MOVEMENT poets believed
that the new age writers' should get the way to
express young generations fresh ideas of
poetry
 For the movement poets, the poet was an
ordinary man like the man next door who is
vey common and lives in common place. The
MOVEMENT writers believed that the poet has
nothing special, nothingt heroic abo his deeds.
The movement poets wanted poet to always
focus on the day to day experiences rather than
modernist poetry.
The movement poets preferred the poetries of
non-intellectual rather than intellectual, and
that was reason why the movement poets
always acted as an interference towards T.S
Eliot and Ezra. The MOVEMENT poets
believed that the poem should suit leisurely
reading, they also believed that the poem
should be free of allusion and should be easy
for common man to read. For the member of
the movement, the poetry meant- Simple,
Sensous content and Indignified form.
 The PROVINCIALISM describes the poet as one,
who is primarily concerned with the values of his
own cultural society. The movement poets used to
believe in Provincialism and that gave very little
importance to civilization of other ages and
countries. The member of MOVEMENT were not
anti- modernists, they were opposed to
modernism, which was reflected in Englishness of
their poetry. ROBERT CONQUEST said, "British
culture is a part of our experience and for that no
one else’s experience, howsoever desirable, can be
substituted”. The idea of the poets was to stick to
their roots of Englishness. So they dint wanted
anymore poems on philosophers or painting or
any cities
All the writers of the MOVEMENT consider the
modernist poetry of 1930’s and 1940’s,
especially that of Eliot and Pound to be a
historical figures without any poetic taste. For
Example; The Eliot poems were full of allusion
from classsical culture and mythology and
bibble which could not be understood without
understanding bibbles are classical culture.
Whereas MOVEMENT poetry is quiet free
from all this allusions.
THE MOVEMENT writers believed that the
poetry shouldn't be like a puzzle with symbols
and images. For them, the poem should have a
crystal clear language where words are not
misunderstood by the readers. Their concern
was that the audience should understand their
poem, the poetry should be such that it pleases
the sense of audience, their impulse, without
any advice mentioned and be should nothing
beyond sensation or thrill.
After the NEW LINES in 1954,the group
affinity began to dissolve. The ANGRY
YOUNG MAN movement occured in
1956,which was the turning point for
“THE MOVEMENT” POETS as they
declined the publication of NEW LINES
anthology, the group became less
exclusive.
