5.  Nutrient deficiency diseases occur when there is
an absence of nutrients which are essential for
growth and health.
 There are more than 50 known nutrients in food.
 Nutrients enable body tissues to grow and
maintain themselves.

7.  Caused due to the deficiency of iodine in
food.
 Thyroid gland become enlarged.
 Goitre is more common among women, but
this includes the many types of goitre caused
by autoimmune problems, and not only those
caused by simple lack of iodine.

8.  Deficiency of protein.
 Found in children.
 Symptoms are growth retardation, mental
retardation, protruded eyes, projected belly.

9.  Deficiency of protein and energy.
 Physically thin body, dry skin etc. are the
symptoms.

10.  Deficiency of Vitamin D.
 Found in children.
 Symptoms are bowed eyes, dental caries,
joint pain etc.

11.  Deficiency of iodine.
 Megaloblastic anaemia- deficiency of folic
acid and Vitamin B12.
