5. Why are greenhouses gases
called greenhouse gases???
• They allow short wave radiation
from the sun to pass through
them
• They absorb outgoing long wave
radiation
6. The Greenhouse Effect is a natural
process, however, human activities
increase the emission of
greenhouse gases in the
atmosphere, causing more heat to
be re-emitted to Earth. This is
known as the ENHANCED
GREENHOUSE EFFECT.
9. How do humans increase greenhouse
gases?
• Burning fossil fuels, deforestation, burning of forests and
smoke from vehicles increases CO2 levels in the atmosphere
• Methane is a hydrocarbon gas produced decomposition of
organic material. Sewage disposals and rice growing
increase methane levels in the atmosphere
• Burning fossil fuels and fertiliser applications increase
nitrous oxide levels in the atmosphere
• CFCs are chemicals that destroy the ozone layer as well as
absorb long wave radiation. They are a group of chemicals
containing chlorine, fluorine and carbon. They are emitted
by refrigerators and aerosol sprays. Their concentration is
increasing by 6% every year!
12. What can I do to stop Global
warming?
• Use “cleaner” energy (Go Green!)
• Smart land use and transportation
• Afforestation- Plant 2 more trees for
every tree cut down!
• Watch less TV
• Use less air conditioning
• Turn of the light when leaving the room
• Use public transport or walk!
• Use less electrical gadgets
13. What is the world
doing to stop
Global Warming?
14. The whole world takes action! :
The Global Climate Deal
Several Countries recently gathered at the United Nations
headquarters to sign the Paris Agreement, which is the first global deal
on climate change.
Countries will aim to keep global temperatures from rising more than
2°C (3.6°F) by 2100 with an ideal target of keeping temperature rise
below 1.5°C (2.7°F).
