1. a. Why do paging systems need to provide low data rates? How does a low data rate lead to
better coverage? [7]
b. List the significant improvements introduced in first, second and third generation cellular

2. a. Detail the Near-Far problem in CDMA systems? [4]
b. If a US AMPS cellular operator is allocated 12.5 MHz for each simplex band, the guard
band at the two edges of the allocated band is 10 KHz, and the channel bandwidth (for each user)
