2. History of White Tower
The tower built by the Othomans in 15th century, in 1430. The present tower
replaced an old byzantine fortification. The tower which one guarded the
eastern end of Thessaloniki’s sea wall, was for many years belonged to Venish,
to which the Byzantines ceded Thessaloniki in 1423.When it built was prison
and scene of mass executions during the Ottoman rule. Today the White Tower
is the most characteristic and important monument of Thessaloniki and it
operates as a museum.
3. History of White Tower (2)
For five centures it was an Ottoman’s fortress, garrison and prison. In 1912,
during the First Balcan War, Thessaloniki was liberated by the Greeks. In the
second half of 19th century the tower was painted white by a prisoner (Nathan
Gulendi) in exchange with his freedom. Since then it is called “White Tower”.
