History of Ukraine. Architectural monument in the capital of Ukraine Golden Gate.

2.  The Golden Gate is the main gate of ancient
Kyiv, a monument of defensive architecture of
Kievan Rus, one of the oldest dated buildings in
Eastern Europe, a symbol of Kyiv. It got its
name by analogy with the Golden Gate in
Constantinople (Constantinople).

3. Construction and architecture
 Yaroslav founded the city - the great Kyiv,

4.  This was the first mention of the Golden Gate in the chronicle of 1037. Thus, "good
news" was to come to the city through these gates.
 The most probable date of construction of the gate is 1017-102, because by 1037
there are already records of the construction of many buildings of the "city of
Yaroslav": the Golden Gate, St. Sophia Cathedral, the Church of St. Irina and others.

5.  The facade of the Golden Gate was supposed to have an image of the Mother
of God - probably a fresco or mosaic. The existence of this image is evidenced
by a chronicle from 1151, which mentioned Izyaslav Mstislavovich's talks with
Ambassador Yuri Dolgorukov at the Golden Gate and the fact that the Grand
Duke looked back at the Holy Mother of God and said: "And to judge us, Most
Pure Lady, with your Son and our God, in this age and in the future"

6.  Sources of the XVI-XVII centuries already indicate that the gate is in a dilapidated
condition. Martin Gruneweg, a Lviv merchant and traveler, wrote in 1584: "The
Golden Gate is still standing, but most of it is destroyed…"

7.  There were a lot of wars at that time, so the Golden Gate was already
underground. The condition of the gate has significantly deteriorated during
its stay underground. Two parallel walls were discovered, 25 meters long
(eastern pylon) and 13 meters (western), and about 8 meters high.

8.  Measures were needed to preserve the monument. During 1835–1836, the
upper part of the walls was filled with lime mortar, and turf was placed on the
ruins. In 1837, engineer F. Mekhovych erected buttresses near the eastern
wall and connected the walls with iron ties and rings.

9.  It was not known for sure what the golden gate looked like. But the research of
scientists allowed to determine the exact dimensions of the Golden Gate: the width of
the main tower was 10.5 m, height 13.35 m, length 17.65, on the main tower is the
Church of the Annunciation, 17 m high. The total height of the gate exceeded 30 m,
and with a one and a half meter cross on the church dome, the height of this gate
reached 32

10.  In the middle of the reconstructed pavilion of the Golden Gate is an exhibition
dedicated to the history of construction, existence and reconstruction of the main
gate of ancient Kiev. The most important part of it is the remains of the walls of the
Gate, which have survived to our time. Built in the 11th century, destroyed in the 17th
century. buried.

11.  In 2006, the museum was closed, and the walls and bars of the capital's valuable
cultural monuments were mutilated by numerous graffiti. The Golden Gate was in a
state of emergency. Since 2009, the museum has been renovated and reopened.

12.  In my opinion, this is the best monument of our history, because it was the defense of
the capital of Ukraine.
