This presentation shows uses of concept maps and graphics to share complex ideas with learners from many different locations. These focus on Tutor/Mentor Institute, LLC strategies that others can use to provide leadership and resources that support efforts to help more inner city young people move successfully through school and into jobs and careers.
The presentation also shows how college interns have created their own interpretations of the Tutor/Mentor Institute, LLC strategies. This is a role we encourage students from every city to take to help duplicate the strategy in more places.
Use of Visualizations to Share Tutor/Mentor Connection Strategies Developed since 1994
1. Using Maps and Visualizations to
Communicate Ideas
In 35 years of leading a volunteer-
based tutor/mentor program Dan
Bassill has had plenty of time to
think of ways leading such
programs might be easier. As he
began to try to communicate those
ideas he found many people did
not understand what he was
talking about. So he begin to draw
pictures and create maps to help
communicate these ideas.
This presentation includes some of
these visualizations. Feel free to
create your own interpretations.

The origin of the Tutor/Mentor Institute was in 1965 when employees of the
Montgomery Ward HQ in Chicago began to tutor neighborhood 2nd-6th
grade kids
Dan Bassill first became
involved in 1973

Note: The missions of Tutor/Mentor Connection and Tutor/Mentor Institute, LLC are exactly the same. It's just a
different tax and funding structure. The T/MI was created as an LLC organization in 2011 when there was no non-
profit structure available to continue the T/MC in Chicago.
From 1993 to 2011 we also led a site-based tutor/mentor program.

The graphic also
emphasizes importance
of the after-5pm time frame,
when business volunteers
are able to make long-term
commitments. This is more
relevant in big cities like
Chicago, where distance makes
school visits difficult.
7. T/MI goal is that youth & volunteers across the world create interpretations of these graphics
and that strategies piloted since 1993 are adopted in many cities and states.

21. Building Learning Communities
The graphics on these pages point to a wide
range of ideas and information. This cannot
be covered in a single reading nor understood
without a context of hands-on involvement.
Thus, our goal is that learning groups, reading
circles, discussion groups, etc. form in
business, churches, colleges, high schools
and civic/social organizations. If one person
invites others to view this information the
same way people come together on a regular
basis to read and understand scripture, or
political ideas, then the information we point
to can be ideas millions of people grow to
understand and apply.
