Reflection Paper On Philosophy
This essay is reflection about my understanding from what I have learned during this class about
what philosophy is. Philosophy is a broad topic and can be hard to understand. What we learn is
class about philosophy defiantly makes me think and makes my brain turn all the time, but so far,
my understanding is that philosophy is the study of knowledge. It breaks down what everything is.
Examples used in class are chariness, deskness, and the main one sued in class "cupness".
According to Aristotle, philosophy is the study of fundamental nature of knowledge; it starts with
wonder. Philosophy makes us ask specific question like "Why" why did this happen and how did it
come to be. Philosophy had its origin in ancient Greece. Philosophy recognizes that everything is
somehow connected.
Philosophy and 'science' are the same project; to do philosophy is to do science and to do science
is to do philosophy. It is connected because philosophy/science was attempting to discover the
fundamental unity principle that lies at the basis of all reality and all experience. This is why we
refer to Garret Strong many times throughout our class discussions
The earliest philosopher/scientist are called Pre–Socratic philosophers. They came before the great
philosopher Socrates. Thales is to be the first. Thales is referred to as the father or founder of
philosophophy/science he lived in the sixth century BCE. Thales began to search for the unity
principle, which is the ground of all things.

The Philosophical Method Of Philosophy
What is Philosophy
Philosophy according to its literal translation is the devotion to wisdom. But exactly what kind of
wisdom does Philosophy entail? This question is answered by the subject matter of Philosophy
(metaphysics, epistemology, value theory). The societal impact of acculturation has presented a
problem to philosophical thinking. However, the philosophical method has also allowed for an
abstract thinking outside that of which we typically inherit through tradition. In a way everyone uses
philosophy on a regular basis since philosophy is a way of thinking about certain points of view or
questions and constructing solid arguments based of logic that make the most sense to the thinker.
Metaphysics is the branch of philosophy that studies the nature of reality. Meaning that this study
contains the big question of who are we? Or does god exist? These questions require an in depth
answer if any can be given. However, philosophy tries to answer these questions using various
approaches. For example, throughout the quarter questions about the existence of god were
brought up and discussed. Even though there is no straight forward answer to whether god or a
being similar to the idea we have of god exists a more in depth question surged that did not ask
whether god existed but if it was possible for a being that is all powerful to exist. In the discussions
we questioned the idea of an all–powerful, loving, and knowing being existing in a world full of
violence and

PHIL 1F90: Spring 2011. Second Essay Question ONE (to be answered as a straight–forward
philosophical essay): Silenus, the satyr, is, or perhaps pretends to be, a determinist. After all,
everything about the satyr, both his nature and nurture, come directly from his creator, Hench. And
certainly, at the beginning of the story, Hench accepts full responsibility for the satyr's actions. But
he eventually changes his mind. How can the satyr, all of a sudden, become morally responsible for
his actions? What exactly changed in Hench's thinking? Michael Gorr is a compatibilist. Does his
position make better sense than either the determinist or the libertarian? Explain. Question TWO (to

Introduction
The whole point of conducting research is to investigate, explore and aid in the development of
theory about how the social world works. Social researchers use different tools to investigate their
research, these tools are not value free and they imply a certain understanding of the world.
I will be critically evaluating these research tools in this essay because there is a range of
considerations to take into account when choosing a research tool.
Epistemology В– is the branch of philosophy that deals with the nature of knowledge. It talks about
variety of knowledge.
Ontology В– is the branch of philosophy that deals with the nature of being. What it means to be
and live in the world because there is a difference...show more content...
Laboratories aren't natural environments so they can't show natural real life behaviour.
Research Strategy
If you believe that the scientific method of finding out information can be used to study the social
world than you would use quantitative techniques, which is evidence that can be expressed in
numbers. It's completely objective and rules out the variables, because they see qualitative research
as being too value laden.
The two most fundamental doctrines of Logical Positivism are (1) that propositions of existential
import have an exclusively empirical reference, and (2) that this empirical reference can be
conclusively shown by logical analysis. The empiristic doctrine is thus to be proved by a logical
method. (Weinburg 1936 p1)
Theory / Research Order
The research tool you decide on shows your relationship between research and theory, and the
approach that positivism takes is deductive, the scientific method.
Deductive В– if you operate in such a way that the theory comes first and your hypothesis comes
from the theory. It's a traditional paradigm that is like a circular process, you start with a theory,
form a hypothesis from the theory, test this, you get the findings and then revise the theory.
The circular process is used in all the natural sciences.
The place of theory in research:
1.Grand Theories
2.Middle Range Theories
Grand Theories are theories about why people act the way they do in the world;

Before taking this class, I thought that philosophy was strictly the study of space and abstract
ideas that I never really gave any attention to. Now at the end of the semester I can say that not
only have I realized how wrong my original opinion of philosophy was, but I also learned that the
more philosophy I can study, the better I will be able to make decisions in my life. Philosophy can be
broken down into three branches: Axiology, Epistemology, and Metaphysics. These branches each
have their own questions and perspectives. We learned about two different types of philosophy,
Perennialism and Essentialism, and I like to think of myself as being a mixture of these two.
Although these two types of philosophy are clearly different from each other, I will explain how I
find myself relating to them both.
The three main branches of philosophy are Axiology, Epistemology, and Metaphysics. The first
branch, Axiology, is the philosophical study of human values and how values differ from facts; It
can also be broken down into two separate parts, ethics and aesthetics. Ethics, derived from the
greek word "ethos" which means character, studies the right and wrong sides of human action. It
asks, "What is good?" and "Who determines what is good?" Aesthetics studies how we evaluate
beauty and harmony in nature and in human life. As humans we are always searching for the correct
way to live, searching for these answers will lead to axiological questions. The next branch is
Epistemology,

Usually, I have never taken philosophical discoveries seriously and I have not thought that they
were effective enough to be implemented in the everyday life that we live, but now my eyes have
been opened to the world of philosophy and my views upon it have completely changed. I feel like
many people may think like I previously did, but with a little bit of enlightenment they can see past
that and understand the real meaning and purpose that lays beyond the complicated words. Through
the many readings that we have passed through in this course my views have been completely
transformed and it has occurred through an analysis of the texts that we have been reading, and
even now analyzing a text will still show me new ways to understand the meaning of it. Many
people will usually have the question "What is philosophy? This is surely a question that we could
spend an entire semester trying to answer. Philosophy comes from the Greek
(П†О№О»ОїПѓОїП†ОЇО±)'philo' and 'sophia' And Is Typically translated to mean 'love of
wisdom'." To me I feel as if there is no concrete definition for the question that was posed. If you
think about philosophy itself, I do not see how you can define the many actions that go into it in
one definition. It ranges from historical sayings, historical actions, discussions, analysis of texts,
and much more and there is no certain way, in my opinion, to put all these actions under one
simple definition. The closest we have gotten to the explanation of just what philosophy is happens
to be the defining of philosophy as the state of wonder, because no matter what you are doing
under the field of philosophy, there will always be this sense of wonder that you will always strive
to fulfill.
Many people tend to wonder on what their goals are in life and what their ultimate purpose is, and
not many if them know that it is the goal of philosophy to answer just that. There have been many
attempts by many different philosophers on the journey to try and find the purpose of human life
on earth, but not many of them have gotten close to finding our eternal purpose on this planet.
Three such philosophers whom have researched what true goals were in life and how people were

Liberty University Abstract
It is my personal philosophy that we are each shaped by our own life experiences. God has
created each one to be unique and special. "I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully
made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well" (Psalm 139:14, NIV). God has plans for
each and every one of us. We are also shaped by the interactions that with have with each person in
our lives, as well as, events that we each lived through. Even minute events sometimes have far
reaching influence on our lives. Educators should always remember that their actions impact the
lives of the students that they serve. Three educators helped to shape what I have become as an
individual, teacher, and mother. Past Teachers All students are influenced by their teachers. I am
no exception. I remember each teacher that played a positive or negative role in my life.
Reflecting back on past educators influences both positive and negative is necessary to improve
teaching practices. Teacher reflection is a daily process. In essence, every decision that is made by
an educator becomes a reflection of which he or she is. A few of my past teachers worked to build
relationships with all of their students. Fullan (1993) encouraged teachers to return their moral
purpose in education, which included creating a strong teacher–student relationship. He stated that
educators begin teaching because they want to make a positive change –

Euthanasia and Ethics The philosophical theories and ethics of two philosophers, Aristotle and Kant,
offer two differing views on the morality of euthanasia. Margaret P. Battin's "Euthanasia: The Way
We Do It, the Way They Do It" offers three countries' perspectives on and laws regarding euthanasia
and/or physician assisted suicide, as well as evaluations and critiques of their policies. To determine
which of these points of view has the most pertinence, all of these arguments will be outlined and
consequently analyzed, both separately and in relation to each other. Their differences and
similarities will be enumerated and described, consequently their merit will be discussed. Ultimately,
Aristotle's moral theory centering around eudaimonia will be shown to be superior to Kant's
categorical imperative, because of its flexible nature when evaluating the acceptability of euthanasia
under different circumstances. Margaret P. Battin's "Euthanasia: The Way We Do It, the Way They
Do It" discusses the occurrence and practice of euthanasia and assisted suicide in three first–world,
industrialized, developed nations: The Netherlands, Germany, and the United States. All three of
these countries have one important factor in common that makes them ideal for studying euthanasia:
aging populations who primarily die of degenerative diseases, rather than parasitic or infectious
diseases (Battin 579). In the United States, outright euthanasia is illegal. Rather, the accepted form of

What Is Philosophy Essay
What is Philosophy?
The idea of philosophy have been for generation mistaught and mistrued to the world. While some
argued that philosophy rejects the existence of the infinity of God, others asserts that the focus of
philosophy is on elemental matters that are real. However, these school of thoughts may be right in
their various capacity but philosophy goes beyond that. Philosophy is in reality not just a theory but
philosophy is the act of discovering the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality, and existence. In
other words, philosophy drive us to reason critically and discover what truth really is (Pecorino,
2000). What does it offer us?
There are several things philosophy offers us. First, philosophy offers us wisdom to discover the
truth regarding the existence of reality and the falacy of relying on our senses. This is because what
our senses suggest to us are far from being the truth, therefore philosophy offers us a more
appropriate approach to trust in our 'reason'. Furthermore, philosophy offer us the ability to wonder
and question things from a perspective that even when we see elemental matters with our...show

Philosophical Argument On Personal Identity
As you go throughout life, it is not very common to stop and question your own personal identity,
because you are just you, there does not seem like that much to it. But, in the philosophical
world, this topic is one of the most popular things to look into and try to understand. Surprisingly,
the idea of personal identity is not as simple as it seems. Many philosophers seem to question if
personal identity even exists, and if they do believe it exists, how exactly? In the most popular
philosophical arguments, there are three theories of personal identity that stick out; psychological
approach, ego theory, and bundle theory. These three theories discuss how personal identity can
be identified, or if it even exists at all. There is no way to be one hundred percent positive that one
of these theories is true, so there will be always be a mystery to personal identity. Even though we
can never be sure, it is always interesting to look into each theory and discuss the possibilities to our
own personal identity. With any philosophical theory, there are many different sides to each topic.
The first argument that will be discussed about personal identity is the psychological approach.
People who stand by the psychological approach concerning personal identity believe that a person's
memories and their personality traits make up who they are. According to this approach, throughout
your life you will continue to be the same person because your memories and personality will never

Philosophy of Ethics Essay
The word "ethics" comes from Greek ethikas meaning character. Today, we use ethics to describe the
normative standard of behavior. The history of philosophical ethics has been broken up into five
rational methods: Virtue, Traditional, Modern, and Post–Modern Ethics. Within these periods, the
philosophy of ethics changed along with the changes being made within society. The first rational
method is Virtue Ethics. The major philosophers during this period were materialists such as Plato,
Aristotle, Epicurus, and Plutarch. Greek were concerned with finding eudaimonia meaning the good
life, but what is the good life? Known as the greatest Western philosopher, Plato developed the

One of the last major philosophers of Virtue Ethics was Plutarch who advocated virtue but disagreed
with Epicurus because he believed there was no true pleasure. At this same time, between 400 B.C.–
40 B.C. Stoic philosophers such Cicero, who combined the philosophies of Aristotle and Plato,
developed his idea on ethics and how everyone has a duty and should imitate virtue for others. He
said duty has two points which are to achieve the Supreme Good, and follow the rules for daily
living. Cicero was a strong believer in rationality incorporated Plato's Cardinal Virtues into his three
rules of conduct: master desires through reason, know true value of goals and be moderate in
actions and lifestyle. Following Virtue Ethics, a major shift occurred in thinking. The philosophers
of Virtue Ethics were materialists and believed we only have what we have and after death, we have
nothing. Traditional Ethics shifted the focus on religion once it began to spread. Also known as
Biblical Ethics, philosophers started a systematic study of Biblical themes and principles surrounding
ethics and morality. St. Augustine was trained as a philosopher and combines his understanding of
the Bible to ethics by answering the same question as Plato and Aristotle did, "What is the highest
good?" He answered this question with happiness just like Aristotle but since Aristotle

Value of Philosophy Essay
Philosophy is the study of examining and thinking about questionable ethical problems and/or
generally accepted certainties. Philosophy aims at knowledge that combines a variety of academic
fields as well as convictions, prejudices and beliefs.
What is Russell's essay about? Present Russell's position in your own words.
Bertrand Russell's essay addresses many issues concerning philosophy. In the writing, he states
philosophy's nature, value, and criticisms. The essay explains these aspects of the study of
philosophy in relatively different ways. The main idea for establishing value in his essay is by
explaining how it is best obtained, and its effect on other people. The essay continues with his
criticisms of those who opposed...show more content...
It states that even though philosophy doesn't give us a certainty of true answers, it suggests many
possibilities which enlarge our thoughts and free them from tyranny of custom. He also supports
the idea that philosophy is beneficial because it "enriches intellectual imagination". The essay
brings up the points of the practical man, and why they are at a loss of intellectual imagination
because they don't explore the unknown by viewing life as simple. As evidence, he uses an
example of mass disease and poverty of a society. The theory is that in those conditions, there would
still be much to be improved to produce a valuable society. Even if the society has the proper food
supplies, they need the 'goods of the mind' (knowledge) to build a well–governed society. He
believes practical men undermine that aspect, thereby explaining their lack of intellectual
imagination. The next argument is that philosophy saves us from convictions, prejudices, and
cultural beliefs. The affect that that has on a person is to open up a fresh prospective with very
little bias. He believed for this to be beneficial to people socially, by developing empathy which
helps you understand others points of view. That theory goes hand–in–hand and gives a fine segway
to his fourth and final argument of "the freedom and equity learned from philosophical
contemplation reflecting in your personality (action and emotion). The

A Philosophical Point Of View Essay
Ethics in a philosophical point of view allows humans to fully understand the importance of morality
in a society. Throughout history, numerous philosophers have had their own sense of morality. For
instance, Thomas Hobbs considered morality as simply as a social contract between cultures through
the establishment of laws, however others like Immanuel Kant saw it as an internal duty that all
humans unconsciously share and owe each other. Most people must side with one spectrum of a
topic than the other to determine an action is moral. Topics such asabortion, war, marriage etc... have
infiltrated modern liberal's conversations. I will write this paper about abortion and, to support my
opinion, I will first compare the arguments previously made by four well known philosophers: Mary
Ann Warren, Patrick Lee, Robert P. George, and Judith Jarvis Thomson. After partaking on
whichever side, I will then apply a specific ethical theory that will help explain what influenced my
decision, then cover any possible objections and finish with any current improvements being made to
appease the tension from the topic. Abortion is the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy. For
such a heartfelt topic, it needs has been a practice since the ancient times They always contradict
with the people that consider themselves traditional.
Abortion as most people know, can be a difficult topic to speak of. It contains the preservation of
human life against the choice of protecting one's body and

Essay about The Importance of Philosophy
The Importance of Philosophy
"All things in life are philosophical." This is a well–known quote by the renowned Greek scientist
/philosopher Aristotle. When one is to imagine life without thought, free will or knowledge, they are
left to only imagine the oblivion they would be left to reside in. To me, philosophy is more than
ethics, esthetics, and epistemology... it is the ability to stand ones ground with certain viewpoints,
attitudes and beliefs. Philosophy seemed to be the center of the majority of peoples lives Before the
Common Era, yet today it also upholds just as much, if not more, importance to the normal person
than of the 'scientist' or renowned 'theorist.' Philosophy makes people who they are, their own...show

Her statement is a prime example of philosophy. The content of her testimonial consisted of many
supported ideas and thoughts. Yet, at the same time, the statement she made was rousing to anyone
that was perhaps overhearing or listening to the conversation. It upheld all the characteristics for a
good philosophical conversation. They include various aspects of diversity, thought, support and
liberalism.
Without philosophy the world would be incomplete. It is common knowledge that there is gray in
every argument, even the most miniscule, it is never black or white. Philosophy is what the gray
area consists of, different beliefs and ideas that cannot fit in either of the two groups. That is what
makes philosophy significant; there are no limits to it. There are no boundaries to what the human
mind can think and there are no unattainable dreams that one's mind cannot conceive. Therefore
stating that there are no tangible boundaries for philosophy, neither are there elusive limitations.
Philosophy can be viewed in so many different ways, with so many different aspects looked at and
critiqued. The simple statement, "eventually the sun will burn out and the Earth will cease to exist"
can produce a rousing philosophical conversation. When having a philosophical discussion the
people 'philosophers' involved must take a look at all

The Theory And Educational Philosophy Essay
My whole childhood I always dreamed about being a teacher. During school breaks, weekends,
and summers, I would set up a "classroom" in my basement and my friends and I would play
school. I would be the teacher most of the time. It takes a very special person to be a teacher, not
everyone is teacher material. You have to be very patient, kind, and caring of all students you work
with and encounter through your day and year. Throughout education there are six main
philosophies to take into consideration, and they are as followed. From a teacher centered classroom
approach they include Essentialism, Behaviorism, and lastly Positivism. In a student centered
classroom approach they are Progressivism, Humanism, and Constructivism. What do these terms
mean? Essentialism is and educational philosophy that there is a common core of information and
skills that an educated person must have. Behaviorism is a psychological theory and educational
philosophy that asserts that behaviors represent the essence of a person and that all behaviors can
be explained. A person acts the way they do for a reason. Finally positivism is a social theory and
educational philosophy that limits truth and knowledge to what is observed and measured. These
are all important for a teacher to take into consideration. Progressivism is an educational philosophy
that emphasizes that ideas should be tested by experiments and that learning is better developed in
questions developed by the learner. Humanism is an

Personal Philosophy Reflection Paper
For the past six weeks, I learned how philosophy has influenced the world globally. Learning that
when human beings voice their thoughts with others, they receive a chance to change the world,
especially if one person speaks one on one, one personage can change the world of one body. My
belief in the power of language is strengthened by philosophy. This philosophy course has
encouraged me to share my opinions that are not influenced by other peers or older adults, but to
deeply reflect and research my beliefs and opinions. Looking at how philosophy has shaped the
United States, I grant my thankfulness towards the Constitution, and the democracy and freedom we

Before philosophy my views would have leaned a little bit more towards a socialist country, but now
I gratitude freedom in hard work, education, speech, etc.
From my readings to research from Edutopia to literature courses, I have gained a deeper
appreciation for language. In order to understand what one is speaking, a person needs to spend
time listening to one's language and before responding must reflect and analyze what the other
said and how to respond. If a person wants to love another person they have to listen to their
language in order to speak their language, and the core part of learning another language is by
listening. According to Joan Blaska, author of The Power of Language: Speak and Write Using
"Person First" the language people use shows one's bias and prejudices. Beliefs and another's
performance fall under the influence of language. Blaska claimed " the degree to which children are
able to perceive themselves as competent and worthy, or the opposite, is heavily influenced by the
verbalizations used by their teachers...Studies have found that labeling of students does affect
teacher expectations which in turn affects student progress". People have heavy influence with their
words, because of this, our language must be intentional in a way, that breaks down negative
stereotypes and helps one gain empathy as well as seeing others capabilities. Communicating and
reading others comments and inquiring others has helped me to accept

What is Philosophy? Essay
The subject of Philosophy and its subcategories have been widely discussed in both the Western and
non–Western world albeit with different focuses. Philosophy includes many different subfields
involving investigation into our existence. These subfields include epistemology, ethics, logic,
metaphysics, philosophy of science, social and political philosophy, and Metaphilosophy.
Epistemology focuses on the study of Knowledge, also known as "Theory of Knowledge". Ethics
involves the study of moral values and rules, Logic; the study of reasoning. Metaphysics is the
study of being and knowing also known as the principles of reality. The Philosophy of Science

These methods of thinking include Critical, Rational, Systematic, Reflective, and normative
thinking. Each of which helps find a conclusion or truth.
The method of critical thinking explores what it means to be critical and how we think critically.
Critical thinking can be defined as an approach to ideas from the standpoint of deliberate
consideration. Philosophy differs from Religion in that this critical thinking is a primary
characteristic used in Western Philosophy. Religion is a belief and way of life while philosophy is
the knowledge or understanding of life. In Greek Philo means love of and Sophy, wisdom. Hence
philosophy is most directly the love of wisdom. Non–western Philosophy incorporates both science
and religon to answer questions. Furthermore, all Sciences are subsets of philosophy. Philosophy
represents the mind, a process of thinking and religion, a process of faith. Philosophy is Dogma
while Religion is a code of conduct revealed upon mankind through revelation. Furthermore religion
depends upon a superior being or unknown force (think god). Because of this, when a philosophy is
codified into rituals and faith, it becomes a religion. Religion tends to back away from rational
discourse, as opposed to Philosophy, which is all about rational discourse and critical thinking.
Similar to critical thinking, the method of rational thinking interprets how we think rationally. Logic
plays a specialized role in rational thinking. Rational thinking

My Reflection Of My Personal Philosophy Of Life
Philosophy of Life In my short seventeen years, I have experienced a great multitude of feelings
towards my own personal experiences. My own reactions to the external circumstances that the
universe has thrown at me, and I do indeed mean thrown, have allowed me to grow as a young
woman and simultaneously allow me the privilege of looking at life through the lenses I wear
today. Because the way I perceive my life to date is how I have been able to assemble the three
things I value most in it: staying foolish, hungry and in love. Remembering the importance of these

I easily grow bored, and after the years have learned to stimulate my own mind. I enjoy setting
goals for myself and find them ten percent more attainable after the goal has been set; and when I
meet that goal, I set another. It is this idea of never settling, always pushing that has allowed me
to blossom into the person I am today. For instance, when I found myself in the top thirty five
percent of my class, I pushed myself to get to the top fifteen percent within two years. When I set
my goals for college and medical school, I do not limit myself to state schools; I push for
acceptance at the large private schools, too. It has become a habit of mine "To strive, to see, to
find, and not to yield" (70). Just as Lord Tennyson Alfred's Ulysses promised that he would not
settle, I expect the same for myself. I refuse to settle for mediocre, and I swear to always yearn for
the most out of life. I live by the idea that I must push myself the furthest every time, in order to
extract any sort of meaning from my work. There is no space for easy labor in my life, but I plan
to continue living a worth life living, with work worth doing. I will not subject myself to the
laziness that accompanies work one does not love because "There is no more dreadful punishment
than futile and hopeless labor" (146). No one understands this as well as Sisyphus of Albert Camus'
"The Myth of Sisyphus" who is forced to push a rock up a hill repeatedly

The Philosophy Of Art And Art Essay
Introduction
Whilst the initial roots of aesthetics as a philosophical mode of enquiry may be traced as far back
as the ancient Greek philosophers, with the discipline itself arising as a cohesive branch of
philosophy in eighteenth century Europe in parallel with the emergence of fine art and museum
culture, what is now often referred to as feminist aesthetics or feminist philosophy of art constitutes
a strikingly novel area of intellectual enquiry, having arisen as recently as the 1970's (Brand and
Korsmeyer, 1995, 12; Ziarek, 2012, 8). It hence seems reasonable to assert that aesthetic approaches
which address the relevance of gender as a central unit of analysis within both art world practices, as
well as philosophical and art historical discourses concerning art and human creativity, remain in
their embryonic stages, and it is only now that they are beginning to coalesce into a coherent
collection of theories within the academy. Rather than representing a single monolithic body of
theory, feminist aesthetic scholarship can loosely be characterised as a collection of theoretical
approaches – plural, rather than singular – which seek to problematise and de–naturalise the
underlying assumptions that underpin dominant traditional theories concerning both the production
and reception of art. In this sense, they constitute a set of responses to the vast body of aesthetic
theory which precedes them.
As such, feminist aesthetic discourse has covered a vast terrain of

Similarities Between Descartes And Confucianism
What is philosophy? Philosophy could be defined in many ways, but I believe that the Oxford
dictionary defines it best: "The study of the theoretical basis of a particular branch of knowledge or
experience or a theory or attitude that acts as a guiding principle for behaviour". That definition
basically encapsulates the entirety of what we have discussed during the time that we have been in
this course. It covers the basic ideals of both eastern and western philosophy quite eloquently over
the span of just one sentence. However, philosophy is a word that cannot be defined in simply one
sentence. Nor is it a word that can be defined broadly to apply to a wide range of people. When it
comes to philosophy, everyone has their own ways of studying and practicing, whether they
understand and acknowledge that or not. While it may seem rudimentary to state something so
simple and synonymous with the phrase "everyone is different", I have found that in something
such as philosophy the smallest of differences can produce the largest of results. This was a
profound truth that became very evident to me while we studied the literary works of many different
philosophers. While there are similarities between the approaches of Descartes and Confucianism to
philosophy, there are also many key differences in culture, politics and language that set the two
apart from one another. The first way in which the philosophical approaches of Descartes and
Confucianism differ is in their cultural

Philosophical Essay

  • 1. Reflection Paper On Philosophy This essay is reflection about my understanding from what I have learned during this class about what philosophy is. Philosophy is a broad topic and can be hard to understand. What we learn is class about philosophy defiantly makes me think and makes my brain turn all the time, but so far, my understanding is that philosophy is the study of knowledge. It breaks down what everything is. Examples used in class are chariness, deskness, and the main one sued in class "cupness". According to Aristotle, philosophy is the study of fundamental nature of knowledge; it starts with wonder. Philosophy makes us ask specific question like "Why" why did this happen and how did it come to be. Philosophy had its origin in ancient Greece. Philosophy recognizes that everything is somehow connected. Philosophy and 'science' are the same project; to do philosophy is to do science and to do science is to do philosophy. It is connected because philosophy/science was attempting to discover the fundamental unity principle that lies at the basis of all reality and all experience. This is why we refer to Garret Strong many times throughout our class discussions The earliest philosopher/scientist are called Pre–Socratic philosophers. They came before the great philosopher Socrates. Thales is to be the first. Thales is referred to as the father or founder of philosophophy/science he lived in the sixth century BCE. Thales began to search for the unity principle, which is the ground of all things. At the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. The Philosophical Method Of Philosophy What is Philosophy Philosophy according to its literal translation is the devotion to wisdom. But exactly what kind of wisdom does Philosophy entail? This question is answered by the subject matter of Philosophy (metaphysics, epistemology, value theory). The societal impact of acculturation has presented a problem to philosophical thinking. However, the philosophical method has also allowed for an abstract thinking outside that of which we typically inherit through tradition. In a way everyone uses philosophy on a regular basis since philosophy is a way of thinking about certain points of view or questions and constructing solid arguments based of logic that make the most sense to the thinker. Metaphysics is the branch of philosophy that studies the nature of reality. Meaning that this study contains the big question of who are we? Or does god exist? These questions require an in depth answer if any can be given. However, philosophy tries to answer these questions using various approaches. For example, throughout the quarter questions about the existence of god were brought up and discussed. Even though there is no straight forward answer to whether god or a being similar to the idea we have of god exists a more in depth question surged that did not ask whether god existed but if it was possible for a being that is all powerful to exist. In the discussions we questioned the idea of an all–powerful, loving, and knowing being existing in a world full of violence and Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Phil Essay PHIL 1F90: Spring 2011. Second Essay Question ONE (to be answered as a straight–forward philosophical essay): Silenus, the satyr, is, or perhaps pretends to be, a determinist. After all, everything about the satyr, both his nature and nurture, come directly from his creator, Hench. And certainly, at the beginning of the story, Hench accepts full responsibility for the satyr's actions. But he eventually changes his mind. How can the satyr, all of a sudden, become morally responsible for his actions? What exactly changed in Hench's thinking? Michael Gorr is a compatibilist. Does his position make better sense than either the determinist or the libertarian? Explain. Question TWO (to be answered as a philosophical essay...show more content... • 4. Introduction The whole point of conducting research is to investigate, explore and aid in the development of theory about how the social world works. Social researchers use different tools to investigate their research, these tools are not value free and they imply a certain understanding of the world. I will be critically evaluating these research tools in this essay because there is a range of considerations to take into account when choosing a research tool. Epistemology В– is the branch of philosophy that deals with the nature of knowledge. It talks about variety of knowledge. Ontology В– is the branch of philosophy that deals with the nature of being. What it means to be and live in the world because there is a difference...show more content... Laboratories aren't natural environments so they can't show natural real life behaviour. Research Strategy If you believe that the scientific method of finding out information can be used to study the social world than you would use quantitative techniques, which is evidence that can be expressed in numbers. It's completely objective and rules out the variables, because they see qualitative research as being too value laden. The two most fundamental doctrines of Logical Positivism are (1) that propositions of existential import have an exclusively empirical reference, and (2) that this empirical reference can be conclusively shown by logical analysis. The empiristic doctrine is thus to be proved by a logical method. (Weinburg 1936 p1) Theory / Research Order The research tool you decide on shows your relationship between research and theory, and the approach that positivism takes is deductive, the scientific method. Deductive В– if you operate in such a way that the theory comes first and your hypothesis comes from the theory. It's a traditional paradigm that is like a circular process, you start with a theory, form a hypothesis from the theory, test this, you get the findings and then revise the theory. The circular process is used in all the natural sciences. The place of theory in research: 1.Grand Theories

  • 6. Before taking this class, I thought that philosophy was strictly the study of space and abstract ideas that I never really gave any attention to. Now at the end of the semester I can say that not only have I realized how wrong my original opinion of philosophy was, but I also learned that the more philosophy I can study, the better I will be able to make decisions in my life. Philosophy can be broken down into three branches: Axiology, Epistemology, and Metaphysics. These branches each have their own questions and perspectives. We learned about two different types of philosophy, Perennialism and Essentialism, and I like to think of myself as being a mixture of these two. Although these two types of philosophy are clearly different from each other, I will explain how I find myself relating to them both. The three main branches of philosophy are Axiology, Epistemology, and Metaphysics. The first branch, Axiology, is the philosophical study of human values and how values differ from facts; It can also be broken down into two separate parts, ethics and aesthetics. Ethics, derived from the greek word "ethos" which means character, studies the right and wrong sides of human action. It asks, "What is good?" and "Who determines what is good?" Aesthetics studies how we evaluate beauty and harmony in nature and in human life. As humans we are always searching for the correct way to live, searching for these answers will lead to axiological questions. The next branch is Epistemology, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Usually, I have never taken philosophical discoveries seriously and I have not thought that they were effective enough to be implemented in the everyday life that we live, but now my eyes have been opened to the world of philosophy and my views upon it have completely changed. I feel like many people may think like I previously did, but with a little bit of enlightenment they can see past that and understand the real meaning and purpose that lays beyond the complicated words. Through the many readings that we have passed through in this course my views have been completely transformed and it has occurred through an analysis of the texts that we have been reading, and even now analyzing a text will still show me new ways to understand the meaning of it. Many people will usually have the question "What is philosophy? This is surely a question that we could spend an entire semester trying to answer. Philosophy comes from the Greek (П†О№О»ОїПѓОїП†ОЇО±)'philo' and 'sophia' And Is Typically translated to mean 'love of wisdom'." To me I feel as if there is no concrete definition for the question that was posed. If you think about philosophy itself, I do not see how you can define the many actions that go into it in one definition. It ranges from historical sayings, historical actions, discussions, analysis of texts, and much more and there is no certain way, in my opinion, to put all these actions under one simple definition. The closest we have gotten to the explanation of just what philosophy is happens to be the defining of philosophy as the state of wonder, because no matter what you are doing under the field of philosophy, there will always be this sense of wonder that you will always strive to fulfill. Many people tend to wonder on what their goals are in life and what their ultimate purpose is, and not many if them know that it is the goal of philosophy to answer just that. There have been many attempts by many different philosophers on the journey to try and find the purpose of human life on earth, but not many of them have gotten close to finding our eternal purpose on this planet. Three such philosophers whom have researched what true goals were in life and how people were really supposed to live and lead a Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Philosophical Position Paper Lori Riley Liberty University Abstract It is my personal philosophy that we are each shaped by our own life experiences. God has created each one to be unique and special. "I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well" (Psalm 139:14, NIV). God has plans for each and every one of us. We are also shaped by the interactions that with have with each person in our lives, as well as, events that we each lived through. Even minute events sometimes have far reaching influence on our lives. Educators should always remember that their actions impact the lives of the students that they serve. Three educators helped to shape what I have become as an individual, teacher, and mother. Past Teachers All students are influenced by their teachers. I am no exception. I remember each teacher that played a positive or negative role in my life. Reflecting back on past educators influences both positive and negative is necessary to improve teaching practices. Teacher reflection is a daily process. In essence, every decision that is made by an educator becomes a reflection of which he or she is. A few of my past teachers worked to build relationships with all of their students. Fullan (1993) encouraged teachers to return their moral purpose in education, which included creating a strong teacher–student relationship. He stated that educators begin teaching because they want to make a positive change – Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Euthanasia and Ethics The philosophical theories and ethics of two philosophers, Aristotle and Kant, offer two differing views on the morality of euthanasia. Margaret P. Battin's "Euthanasia: The Way We Do It, the Way They Do It" offers three countries' perspectives on and laws regarding euthanasia and/or physician assisted suicide, as well as evaluations and critiques of their policies. To determine which of these points of view has the most pertinence, all of these arguments will be outlined and consequently analyzed, both separately and in relation to each other. Their differences and similarities will be enumerated and described, consequently their merit will be discussed. Ultimately, Aristotle's moral theory centering around eudaimonia will be shown to be superior to Kant's categorical imperative, because of its flexible nature when evaluating the acceptability of euthanasia under different circumstances. Margaret P. Battin's "Euthanasia: The Way We Do It, the Way They Do It" discusses the occurrence and practice of euthanasia and assisted suicide in three first–world, industrialized, developed nations: The Netherlands, Germany, and the United States. All three of these countries have one important factor in common that makes them ideal for studying euthanasia: aging populations who primarily die of degenerative diseases, rather than parasitic or infectious diseases (Battin 579). In the United States, outright euthanasia is illegal. Rather, the accepted form of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. What Is Philosophy Essay What is Philosophy? The idea of philosophy have been for generation mistaught and mistrued to the world. While some argued that philosophy rejects the existence of the infinity of God, others asserts that the focus of philosophy is on elemental matters that are real. However, these school of thoughts may be right in their various capacity but philosophy goes beyond that. Philosophy is in reality not just a theory but philosophy is the act of discovering the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality, and existence. In other words, philosophy drive us to reason critically and discover what truth really is (Pecorino, 2000). What does it offer us? There are several things philosophy offers us. First, philosophy offers us wisdom to discover the truth regarding the existence of reality and the falacy of relying on our senses. This is because what our senses suggest to us are far from being the truth, therefore philosophy offers us a more appropriate approach to trust in our 'reason'. Furthermore, philosophy offer us the ability to wonder and question things from a perspective that even when we see elemental matters with our...show more content... • 11. Philosophical Argument On Personal Identity As you go throughout life, it is not very common to stop and question your own personal identity, because you are just you, there does not seem like that much to it. But, in the philosophical world, this topic is one of the most popular things to look into and try to understand. Surprisingly, the idea of personal identity is not as simple as it seems. Many philosophers seem to question if personal identity even exists, and if they do believe it exists, how exactly? In the most popular philosophical arguments, there are three theories of personal identity that stick out; psychological approach, ego theory, and bundle theory. These three theories discuss how personal identity can be identified, or if it even exists at all. There is no way to be one hundred percent positive that one of these theories is true, so there will be always be a mystery to personal identity. Even though we can never be sure, it is always interesting to look into each theory and discuss the possibilities to our own personal identity. With any philosophical theory, there are many different sides to each topic. The first argument that will be discussed about personal identity is the psychological approach. People who stand by the psychological approach concerning personal identity believe that a person's memories and their personality traits make up who they are. According to this approach, throughout your life you will continue to be the same person because your memories and personality will never Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. Philosophy of Ethics Essay The word "ethics" comes from Greek ethikas meaning character. Today, we use ethics to describe the normative standard of behavior. The history of philosophical ethics has been broken up into five rational methods: Virtue, Traditional, Modern, and Post–Modern Ethics. Within these periods, the philosophy of ethics changed along with the changes being made within society. The first rational method is Virtue Ethics. The major philosophers during this period were materialists such as Plato, Aristotle, Epicurus, and Plutarch. Greek were concerned with finding eudaimonia meaning the good life, but what is the good life? Known as the greatest Western philosopher, Plato developed the Cardinal Virtues: Justice, Courage, Moderation, and...show more content... One of the last major philosophers of Virtue Ethics was Plutarch who advocated virtue but disagreed with Epicurus because he believed there was no true pleasure. At this same time, between 400 B.C.– 40 B.C. Stoic philosophers such Cicero, who combined the philosophies of Aristotle and Plato, developed his idea on ethics and how everyone has a duty and should imitate virtue for others. He said duty has two points which are to achieve the Supreme Good, and follow the rules for daily living. Cicero was a strong believer in rationality incorporated Plato's Cardinal Virtues into his three rules of conduct: master desires through reason, know true value of goals and be moderate in actions and lifestyle. Following Virtue Ethics, a major shift occurred in thinking. The philosophers of Virtue Ethics were materialists and believed we only have what we have and after death, we have nothing. Traditional Ethics shifted the focus on religion once it began to spread. Also known as Biblical Ethics, philosophers started a systematic study of Biblical themes and principles surrounding ethics and morality. St. Augustine was trained as a philosopher and combines his understanding of the Bible to ethics by answering the same question as Plato and Aristotle did, "What is the highest good?" He answered this question with happiness just like Aristotle but since Aristotle Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. Value of Philosophy Essay Philosophy is the study of examining and thinking about questionable ethical problems and/or generally accepted certainties. Philosophy aims at knowledge that combines a variety of academic fields as well as convictions, prejudices and beliefs. What is Russell's essay about? Present Russell's position in your own words. Bertrand Russell's essay addresses many issues concerning philosophy. In the writing, he states philosophy's nature, value, and criticisms. The essay explains these aspects of the study of philosophy in relatively different ways. The main idea for establishing value in his essay is by explaining how it is best obtained, and its effect on other people. The essay continues with his criticisms of those who opposed...show more content... It states that even though philosophy doesn't give us a certainty of true answers, it suggests many possibilities which enlarge our thoughts and free them from tyranny of custom. He also supports the idea that philosophy is beneficial because it "enriches intellectual imagination". The essay brings up the points of the practical man, and why they are at a loss of intellectual imagination because they don't explore the unknown by viewing life as simple. As evidence, he uses an example of mass disease and poverty of a society. The theory is that in those conditions, there would still be much to be improved to produce a valuable society. Even if the society has the proper food supplies, they need the 'goods of the mind' (knowledge) to build a well–governed society. He believes practical men undermine that aspect, thereby explaining their lack of intellectual imagination. The next argument is that philosophy saves us from convictions, prejudices, and cultural beliefs. The affect that that has on a person is to open up a fresh prospective with very little bias. He believed for this to be beneficial to people socially, by developing empathy which helps you understand others points of view. That theory goes hand–in–hand and gives a fine segway to his fourth and final argument of "the freedom and equity learned from philosophical contemplation reflecting in your personality (action and emotion). • 14. A Philosophical Point Of View Essay Ethics in a philosophical point of view allows humans to fully understand the importance of morality in a society. Throughout history, numerous philosophers have had their own sense of morality. For instance, Thomas Hobbs considered morality as simply as a social contract between cultures through the establishment of laws, however others like Immanuel Kant saw it as an internal duty that all humans unconsciously share and owe each other. Most people must side with one spectrum of a topic than the other to determine an action is moral. Topics such asabortion, war, marriage etc... have infiltrated modern liberal's conversations. I will write this paper about abortion and, to support my opinion, I will first compare the arguments previously made by four well known philosophers: Mary Ann Warren, Patrick Lee, Robert P. George, and Judith Jarvis Thomson. After partaking on whichever side, I will then apply a specific ethical theory that will help explain what influenced my decision, then cover any possible objections and finish with any current improvements being made to appease the tension from the topic. Abortion is the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy. For such a heartfelt topic, it needs has been a practice since the ancient times They always contradict with the people that consider themselves traditional. Abortion as most people know, can be a difficult topic to speak of. It contains the preservation of human life against the choice of protecting one's body and Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. Essay about The Importance of Philosophy The Importance of Philosophy "All things in life are philosophical." This is a well–known quote by the renowned Greek scientist /philosopher Aristotle. When one is to imagine life without thought, free will or knowledge, they are left to only imagine the oblivion they would be left to reside in. To me, philosophy is more than ethics, esthetics, and epistemology... it is the ability to stand ones ground with certain viewpoints, attitudes and beliefs. Philosophy seemed to be the center of the majority of peoples lives Before the Common Era, yet today it also upholds just as much, if not more, importance to the normal person than of the 'scientist' or renowned 'theorist.' Philosophy makes people who they are, their own...show more content... Her statement is a prime example of philosophy. The content of her testimonial consisted of many supported ideas and thoughts. Yet, at the same time, the statement she made was rousing to anyone that was perhaps overhearing or listening to the conversation. It upheld all the characteristics for a good philosophical conversation. They include various aspects of diversity, thought, support and liberalism. Without philosophy the world would be incomplete. It is common knowledge that there is gray in every argument, even the most miniscule, it is never black or white. Philosophy is what the gray area consists of, different beliefs and ideas that cannot fit in either of the two groups. That is what makes philosophy significant; there are no limits to it. There are no boundaries to what the human mind can think and there are no unattainable dreams that one's mind cannot conceive. Therefore stating that there are no tangible boundaries for philosophy, neither are there elusive limitations. Philosophy can be viewed in so many different ways, with so many different aspects looked at and critiqued. The simple statement, "eventually the sun will burn out and the Earth will cease to exist" can produce a rousing philosophical conversation. When having a philosophical discussion the people 'philosophers' involved must take a look at all Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 16. The Theory And Educational Philosophy Essay My whole childhood I always dreamed about being a teacher. During school breaks, weekends, and summers, I would set up a "classroom" in my basement and my friends and I would play school. I would be the teacher most of the time. It takes a very special person to be a teacher, not everyone is teacher material. You have to be very patient, kind, and caring of all students you work with and encounter through your day and year. Throughout education there are six main philosophies to take into consideration, and they are as followed. From a teacher centered classroom approach they include Essentialism, Behaviorism, and lastly Positivism. In a student centered classroom approach they are Progressivism, Humanism, and Constructivism. What do these terms mean? Essentialism is and educational philosophy that there is a common core of information and skills that an educated person must have. Behaviorism is a psychological theory and educational philosophy that asserts that behaviors represent the essence of a person and that all behaviors can be explained. A person acts the way they do for a reason. Finally positivism is a social theory and educational philosophy that limits truth and knowledge to what is observed and measured. These are all important for a teacher to take into consideration. Progressivism is an educational philosophy that emphasizes that ideas should be tested by experiments and that learning is better developed in questions developed by the learner. Learning that when human beings voice their thoughts with others, they receive a chance to change the world, especially if one person speaks one on one, one personage can change the world of one body. My belief in the power of language is strengthened by philosophy. This philosophy course has encouraged me to share my opinions that are not influenced by other peers or older adults, but to deeply reflect and research my beliefs and opinions. In order to understand what one is speaking, a person needs to spend time listening to one's language and before responding must reflect and analyze what the other said and how to respond. If a person wants to love another person they have to listen to their language in order to speak their language, and the core part of learning another language is by listening. According to Joan Blaska, author of The Power of Language: Speak and Write Using "Person First" the language people use shows one's bias and prejudices. Beliefs and another's performance fall under the influence of language. Blaska claimed " the degree to which children are able to perceive themselves as competent and worthy, or the opposite, is heavily influenced by the verbalizations used by their teachers...Studies have found that labeling of students does affect teacher expectations which in turn affects student progress". People have heavy influence with their words, because of this, our language must be intentional in a way, that breaks down negative stereotypes and helps one gain empathy as well as seeing others capabilities. • 18. What is Philosophy? Essay The subject of Philosophy and its subcategories have been widely discussed in both the Western and non–Western world albeit with different focuses. Philosophy includes many different subfields involving investigation into our existence. These subfields include epistemology, ethics, logic, metaphysics, philosophy of science, social and political philosophy, and Metaphilosophy. Epistemology focuses on the study of Knowledge, also known as "Theory of Knowledge". Ethics involves the study of moral values and rules, Logic; the study of reasoning. Metaphysics is the study of being and knowing also known as the principles of reality. The Philosophy of Science analyzes the nature and results of scientific inquiry. Social and Political Philosophy...show more content... These methods of thinking include Critical, Rational, Systematic, Reflective, and normative thinking. Each of which helps find a conclusion or truth. The method of critical thinking explores what it means to be critical and how we think critically. Critical thinking can be defined as an approach to ideas from the standpoint of deliberate consideration. Philosophy differs from Religion in that this critical thinking is a primary characteristic used in Western Philosophy. Religion is a belief and way of life while philosophy is the knowledge or understanding of life. In Greek Philo means love of and Sophy, wisdom. Hence philosophy is most directly the love of wisdom. Non–western Philosophy incorporates both science and religon to answer questions. Furthermore, all Sciences are subsets of philosophy. Philosophy represents the mind, a process of thinking and religion, a process of faith. Philosophy is Dogma while Religion is a code of conduct revealed upon mankind through revelation. Furthermore religion depends upon a superior being or unknown force (think god). Because of this, when a philosophy is codified into rituals and faith, it becomes a religion. Religion tends to back away from rational discourse, as opposed to Philosophy, which is all about rational discourse and critical thinking. Similar to critical thinking, the method of rational thinking interprets how we think rationally. Logic plays a specialized role in rational thinking. • 19. My Reflection Of My Personal Philosophy Of Life Philosophy of Life In my short seventeen years, I have experienced a great multitude of feelings towards my own personal experiences. My own reactions to the external circumstances that the universe has thrown at me, and I do indeed mean thrown, have allowed me to grow as a young woman and simultaneously allow me the privilege of looking at life through the lenses I wear today. Because the way I perceive my life to date is how I have been able to assemble the three things I value most in it: staying foolish, hungry and in love. Remembering the importance of these have enabled me to find both success and happiness; and I know that I am doing my future self proud by continuing to remember them. Firstly, I have always been acutely aware of...show more content... I easily grow bored, and after the years have learned to stimulate my own mind. I enjoy setting goals for myself and find them ten percent more attainable after the goal has been set; and when I meet that goal, I set another. It is this idea of never settling, always pushing that has allowed me to blossom into the person I am today. For instance, when I found myself in the top thirty five percent of my class, I pushed myself to get to the top fifteen percent within two years. When I set my goals for college and medical school, I do not limit myself to state schools; I push for acceptance at the large private schools, too. It has become a habit of mine "To strive, to see, to find, and not to yield" (70). Just as Lord Tennyson Alfred's Ulysses promised that he would not settle, I expect the same for myself. I refuse to settle for mediocre, and I swear to always yearn for the most out of life. I live by the idea that I must push myself the furthest every time, in order to extract any sort of meaning from my work. There is no space for easy labor in my life, but I plan to continue living a worth life living, with work worth doing. I will not subject myself to the laziness that accompanies work one does not love because "There is no more dreadful punishment than futile and hopeless labor" (146). No one understands this as well as Sisyphus of Albert Camus' "The Myth of Sisyphus" who is forced to push a rock up a hill repeatedly Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 20. The Philosophy Of Art And Art Essay Introduction Whilst the initial roots of aesthetics as a philosophical mode of enquiry may be traced as far back as the ancient Greek philosophers, with the discipline itself arising as a cohesive branch of philosophy in eighteenth century Europe in parallel with the emergence of fine art and museum culture, what is now often referred to as feminist aesthetics or feminist philosophy of art constitutes a strikingly novel area of intellectual enquiry, having arisen as recently as the 1970's (Brand and Korsmeyer, 1995, 12; Ziarek, 2012, 8). It hence seems reasonable to assert that aesthetic approaches which address the relevance of gender as a central unit of analysis within both art world practices, as well as philosophical and art historical discourses concerning art and human creativity, remain in their embryonic stages, and it is only now that they are beginning to coalesce into a coherent collection of theories within the academy. Rather than representing a single monolithic body of theory, feminist aesthetic scholarship can loosely be characterised as a collection of theoretical approaches – plural, rather than singular – which seek to problematise and de–naturalise the underlying assumptions that underpin dominant traditional theories concerning both the production and reception of art. In this sense, they constitute a set of responses to the vast body of aesthetic theory which precedes them. As such, feminist aesthetic discourse has covered a vast terrain of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 21. Similarities Between Descartes And Confucianism What is philosophy? Philosophy could be defined in many ways, but I believe that the Oxford dictionary defines it best: "The study of the theoretical basis of a particular branch of knowledge or experience or a theory or attitude that acts as a guiding principle for behaviour". That definition basically encapsulates the entirety of what we have discussed during the time that we have been in this course. It covers the basic ideals of both eastern and western philosophy quite eloquently over the span of just one sentence. However, philosophy is a word that cannot be defined in simply one sentence. Nor is it a word that can be defined broadly to apply to a wide range of people. When it comes to philosophy, everyone has their own ways of studying and practicing, whether they understand and acknowledge that or not. While it may seem rudimentary to state something so simple and synonymous with the phrase "everyone is different", I have found that in something such as philosophy the smallest of differences can produce the largest of results. This was a profound truth that became very evident to me while we studied the literary works of many different philosophers. While there are similarities between the approaches of Descartes and Confucianism to philosophy, there are also many key differences in culture, politics and language that set the two apart from one another. The first way in which the philosophical approaches of Descartes and Confucianism differ is in their cultural Get more content on HelpWriting.net
