How Basketball Has Changed The World
The History of Basketball Have you ever wondered how basketball was created? Have you ever
questioned how basketball has evolved into becoming one of the most popular sports in the world?
Basketball evolved from a simple sport played in one gym to now being more complex and played in
gyms all over the world. It was Dr. James Naismith who first created the basics of basketball. When
he first made the game, no one could have imagined the games success and spread throughout the
entire world. According to Wonderopolis.org, Dr. James Naismith was born on November 6, 1861
in Canada. It was 1891 while Naismith was working as a physical education instructor at the local
YMCA training school in Springfield, Massachusetts, when basketball was created. Naismith was
being influenced by his boss to create a new indoor game that was able to provide an "athletic
distraction". The reason it needed to be played indoors was because they needed a game played
during the winter that still required a lot of effort from the players. Naismith had been given a
two week time period to come up with a new game to play. Wonderopolis.org says "He decided to
invent a game of skill, finesse, and accuracy, rather than one that relied on pure strength." Naismith
said he was inspired by the child game "duck on a rock". This game involves players throwing a
rock at a duck perched on a rock. The first game of basketball was played on December 21, 1891.
This game was played with a soccer ball,

Basketball History
The world wide sport basketball was founded in December 1891. When a Canadian physical
education instructor called James Naismith needed to find a way to keep young athletes warm
during the cold winter months. Dr. James Naismith worked at a YMCA in Springfield,
Massachusetts. Dr. James Naismith invented basketball on December 1891 at a training school in
Springfield, Massachusetts. From 1891– 1906 the game consisted of two peach baskets and a soccer
ball. There would be 19 people on the court (8 aside). The original game consisted of only 13 rules.
In the original rules of basketball, there was no physical contact. After 15 years the peach baskets
changed to a fruit basket that would hang from a wall on either side of the court. The YMCA had

The History of Basketball Basketball started with its invention in 1891 and was started by a P.E.
teacher at a YMCA. His name was James Naismith. Once basketball had started rolling, it boomed.
It was popular just from a small YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts. People eventually picked up
on basketball and this was enjoyed by many Americans and is used a lot. Basketball was just
invented because there were people that wanted a way to stay conditioned during the winter for the
upcoming football and lacrosse season. This is something that we enjoy today and is one of the
biggest games in America, because of the evolution of rules, the way the game is played, and
evolution of new and old leagues.

13. The side with the most goals is declared the winner." "(History of basketball.") James Naismith
was a genius creating basketball and these were some of the rules that are now added onto to
create safety and rule for teams. Basketball later boomed so much that they later wanted to create
a league. The first league was called the BAA. That stands for the Basketball Association of
America. The initial president was Maurice Podoloff. This all happened November 1, 1946. The
league started with some teams that were from some small cities and then there were those that
were from bigger cities. "On August 3rd, 1949, representatives met in the Empire State Building
to finalize a merge" "(NBA is Born.)" The new league had been joined from the ABA and the
NBA. The new league was called the NBA, which had 17 teams that represented both small and
big cities. Some new rules were set in place that outlawed zone defense and added a 24 second
shot clock. This sped up the game and made it more enjoyable. The game of basketball had evolved
into a great thing that still brings the world

In 1891 a simple game was invented that changed the world. Basketball is a athletic sport usually
played on an indoor court where two teams of five each attempt to score by shooting the basketball
into one of two baskets at each end of the court. The team who scores the most baskets wins the
game. Because of its continuous action and frequent scoring basketball is one of the most popular
spectator sports in the world. Basketball can be played outdoors as well, it was invented to serve as
an exciting indoor game for the winter months and to be played with less contact than football. It
quickly became a spectator sport. Now basketball attracts larger audiences than ever especially in the
United States, South America, and Europe.

rock by tossing another rock at it.

How Basketball Has Changed Over The Years Essay
Over 30 million people play basketball in America and it is one of fastest growing sports in the
world (Lynn). It is an exciting and a very intense sport to play and watch. Most people, however,
do not know how or when it was created. The purpose of this paper is to inform people about when
basketball was created, how much it has changed over the years, and to talk about some of the most
influential players who ever played this amazing sport. In 1891, James Naismith was a gym teacher
at the local YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts (Boerg). After many years of teaching there, he
wanted to come up with a new game that the kids would enjoy to play, that was not violent like
football. After many attempts at bringing in a new game and his students rejecting him he had to
sit down and think very hard about something new. He thought about all the games the kids
enjoyed playing like soccer, football, and kickball and wondered how a game could be played
with those combined but not be violent. So he sat down in his office and began writing down
rules and figuring out a new game. The following day, he had the janitors go into the basement of
the YMCA and collect two old peach baskets, two ladders and a soccer ball (Boerg). When the
students arrived at school, they joked about how here is another game that is not going to be any
fun, but after they started to play this new game, they actually really enjoyed it (Boerg). Another
teacher at the school went up to James and asked what the

What Is The History Of Basketball?
The history of basketball
An NBA basketball game is 4 quarters of 12 minutes each, in total it's 48 minutes. However, the
time is stopped every time there is a foul, ball out of bounds, timeouts, and 15 minute halftime
which makes the game 2 to 2.5 hours long. In a normal game there is two baskets and ten players,
five on each team. Those are the basic components of most basketball games. The intent of the game
is for the offensive team to toss a round ball, called a basketball, into the opposing team's basket. The
team without the basketball, known as the defensive team, tries to prevent this from happening by
guarding the offensive players. When you're on defence there's a limit to how much physical contact

The objective of the game was to throw the basketball into the fruit baskets nailed to the lower
railing of the gym. Every time someone scored a point, the game was stopped so the janitor could
bring out a ladder and retrieve the ball. After a while, they decided to remove the bottom of the
fruit baskets so it would be easier to retrieve the bell. The first public basketball game was played in
Springfield, Massachusetts, on March 11, 1892.

The History and Development of Basketball Essay
Have you ever speculated who created basketball? Maybe even if different cultures played it and
how they did? What the original rules were? How it has been altered since it was first invented?
All of these answers can be found in this paper. Did you know that our ancestors played a game sort
of like basketball before it was even invented? Centuries ago in Mexico, people played games
where they used a ball and hoop. They would take turns trying to toss the ball into the basket and
keep track of how many times each person made a basket. Sometimes the adults and the kids would
play this game together and sometimes they played individually. The Aztec Indians also played a

This game became known as basket ball. The very first people to attempt this new game were the
members of Dr. James Naismith's gym class. At first, Naismith was slightly worried that the

can be thrown in any direction with one or both hands.
The ball can be batted in any direction with one or both hands (batting with the fist is not authorized).
A player cannot run with the ball. The player must throw the ball from the spot he catches it on,
allowance to be made for a man who catches the ball when running at a good speed if he tries to stop.
The ball must be held in or between the hands; the arms or body must not be used to hold it.
Any shouldering, holding, pushing, tripping, or striking an opponent shall not be allowed; the first

He got to thinking and started combining ideas from other games to make the game of what it is
known today as basketball. Naismith invented this game in 1891 (Faurschou). He decided to start
making little notes of his ideas. He was going to use a slightly large and light ball. Since the game
was made to play indoors the players would have no need to run with the ball. Also players
couldn't hit or strike other players. After Naismith came up with the basic rules he decided what
the goal of the game would be. The goals were first going to be placed low but Naismith decided
that if the other team were defending it, it would be nearly impossible to make a goal. This is
how the idea of the basketball hoop came about. He decided to place the goal over the player's
heads. The goals would start as peach baskets but would later evolve into hoops (Padwe). The
hoops would be made of iron and a braided cord netting to verify the ball was going through the
hoop (Peterson).Naismith had his game ready but needed a way to start it. He thought of several
different ways but wanted to eliminate roughness. He decided to take part of rugby when the ref
throws the ball in between the players. Naismith said the ball would be thrown in an upward
motion in between both of the centers for each team and this would be the start of the game. The
game of basketball was now ready but just needed people to start it. The kids at the YMCA training
center started

until 1892, when Sendra Berenson Abbot, decided to mix things up a little and change the rules
so that the girls could play the sport. So, now there are two professional leagues , one for men,

the pros was paid $15 and the game was Trenton vs. Brooklyn and Trenton won but, they only
scored 15 points. Today there are 120 point games and the league has changed in many ways

Not only in the way the game was played but also the way it was designed. When the sport was
first designed, there used to be an unlimited amount of players allowed on the court. That was
changed to only five players from each team allowed on the court. The amount of time played
was changed also. It used to be three, twenty minute quarters and that was changed to four, seven
to eight minute quarters. The "post player" comes from an old post that was in the middle of the
floor during a game. With that post being there, they would run their opponent into the post and
call it a post play. The backboards have probably changed the most, other than the actual basket.
The backboards used to be soft wired boards then they were changed to wooden and have changed
from wooden to glass/plastic. The basket was a peach basket at the very beginning. It was

A Brief History of Basketball
Basketball is a sport played by many individuals throughout the world. The sport was created in
December of 1891 by Dr. James Naismith, and has slowly evolved ever since.
Originally, the sport was played with a soccer ball and peach baskets, and was of a much slower
pace compared to the basketball games of today. By 1906, the peach baskets were replaced with
metal hoops and backboards. By the early 19th century, many colleges had adopted basketball as one
of their sport. Soon after, high schools began to play basketball due to the little amount of equipment
and personnel needed to play the game. Finally, in the late 195os the more basketball–like orange
ball was introduced into the sport.
The objective of basketball is to shoot a rubber basketball through a hoop with a diameter of 18
inches that stands 10 feet high. Points are awarded to the team depending on where the shot was
taken. Shots taken within or on the 3–point line are worth only two points, while shots taken outside
the perimeter of the 3–point line are worth 3 points. Wolation of the rules result in fouls in which
the opposing team may take free throws worth 1 point from a line that is fifteen feet from the
backboard.
As previously stated, shots may be taken from many various locations on the court, and various
locations have different optimal angle and shooting circumstances. As a former basketball player, I
have a personal interest in the importance of the angle at which to shoot a

History Of Basketball Essay

  • 1. How Basketball Has Changed The World The History of Basketball Have you ever wondered how basketball was created? Have you ever questioned how basketball has evolved into becoming one of the most popular sports in the world? Basketball evolved from a simple sport played in one gym to now being more complex and played in gyms all over the world. It was Dr. James Naismith who first created the basics of basketball. When he first made the game, no one could have imagined the games success and spread throughout the entire world. According to Wonderopolis.org, Dr. James Naismith was born on November 6, 1861 in Canada. It was 1891 while Naismith was working as a physical education instructor at the local YMCA training school in Springfield, Massachusetts, when basketball was created. Naismith was being influenced by his boss to create a new indoor game that was able to provide an "athletic distraction". The reason it needed to be played indoors was because they needed a game played during the winter that still required a lot of effort from the players. Naismith had been given a two week time period to come up with a new game to play. Wonderopolis.org says "He decided to invent a game of skill, finesse, and accuracy, rather than one that relied on pure strength." Naismith said he was inspired by the child game "duck on a rock". This game involves players throwing a rock at a duck perched on a rock. The first game of basketball was played on December 21, 1891. This game was played with a soccer ball, Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Once basketball had started rolling, it boomed. It was popular just from a small YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts. People eventually picked up on basketball and this was enjoyed by many Americans and is used a lot. Basketball was just invented because there were people that wanted a way to stay conditioned during the winter for the upcoming football and lacrosse season. This is something that we enjoy today and is one of the biggest games in America, because of the evolution of rules, the way the game is played, and evolution of new and old leagues. James Naismith was a genius creating basketball and these were some of the rules that are now added onto to create safety and rule for teams. Basketball later boomed so much that they later wanted to create a league. The first league was called the BAA. That stands for the Basketball Association of America. The initial president was Maurice Podoloff. This all happened November 1, 1946. The league started with some teams that were from some small cities and then there were those that were from bigger cities. "On August 3rd, 1949, representatives met in the Empire State Building to finalize a merge" "(NBA is Born.)" The new league had been joined from the ABA and the NBA. The new league was called the NBA, which had 17 teams that represented both small and big cities. Some new rules were set in place that outlawed zone defense and added a 24 second shot clock. This sped up the game and made it more enjoyable. The game of basketball had evolved into a great thing that still brings the world Get more content on HelpWriting.net

It is an exciting and a very intense sport to play and watch. Most people, however, do not know how or when it was created. The purpose of this paper is to inform people about when basketball was created, how much it has changed over the years, and to talk about some of the most influential players who ever played this amazing sport. After many years of teaching there, he wanted to come up with a new game that the kids would enjoy to play, that was not violent like football. After many attempts at bringing in a new game and his students rejecting him he had to sit down and think very hard about something new. He thought about all the games the kids enjoyed playing like soccer, football, and kickball and wondered how a game could be played with those combined but not be violent. So he sat down in his office and began writing down rules and figuring out a new game. The following day, he had the janitors go into the basement of the YMCA and collect two old peach baskets, two ladders and a soccer ball (Boerg). When the students arrived at school, they joked about how here is another game that is not going to be any fun, but after they started to play this new game, they actually really enjoyed it (Boerg). The ball can be batted in any direction with one or both hands (batting with the fist is not authorized). A player cannot run with the ball. The player must throw the ball from the spot he catches it on, allowance to be made for a man who catches the ball when running at a good speed if he tries to stop. The ball must be held in or between the hands; the arms or body must not be used to hold it. Any shouldering, holding, pushing, tripping, or striking an opponent shall not be allowed; the first infringement of this rule by any player shall count as a foul, the second shall disqualify him until the next goal is made, or, if there is evident intent to injure the person, for the whole of the game, no sub allowed. A foul is striking at the ball with the fist, violation of Rules 3, 4, and such described in Rule 5. If either side makes three consecutive fouls, it shall count as a goal for the other team (consecutive means without the other team in the mean time making a foul). He got to thinking and started combining ideas from other games to make the game of what it is known today as basketball. Naismith invented this game in 1891 (Faurschou). He decided to start making little notes of his ideas. He was going to use a slightly large and light ball. Since the game was made to play indoors the players would have no need to run with the ball. Also players couldn't hit or strike other players. After Naismith came up with the basic rules he decided what the goal of the game would be. The goals were first going to be placed low but Naismith decided that if the other team were defending it, it would be nearly impossible to make a goal. This is how the idea of the basketball hoop came about. He decided to place the goal over the player's heads. The goals would start as peach baskets but would later evolve into hoops (Padwe). The hoops would be made of iron and a braided cord netting to verify the ball was going through the hoop (Peterson).Naismith had his game ready but needed a way to start it. He thought of several different ways but wanted to eliminate roughness. He decided to take part of rugby when the ref throws the ball in between the players. Naismith said the ball would be thrown in an upward motion in between both of the centers for each team and this would be the start of the game. The game of basketball was now ready but just needed people to start it. The kids at the YMCA training center started Get more content on HelpWriting.net

The game has grown from a sport with just a few teams in the northeast to a nationwide sport with thirty NBA teams in almost all states and one in Canada. Basketball has also grown in paying wise, from the original $2.50 for home games and $1.50 for road game to the now league minimum of $507,336 for players who have not been in the NBA for ten years to $1,448,490 for those who have been playing for ten years. Basketball also saw in less then 100 years Juwan Howard get offers from the bullets and heat for $100 million for seven years. This was the biggest offer for a player for at its time. Juwan might have been the most expensive player, but he was far from a star. The NBA's first star was Walt Chamberlain from UCLA later being joined by future star Bill Russell from San Francisco University. Walt and Bill would open up the door for future superstars like Michael Jordan, Irving (magic) Johnson, and Nate Archibald. Players like Michael, Magic, and Nate would open up the same door for stars we all know today as LeBron James, Russell Westbrook, and Kobe Bryant. The doors that opened for them will open for future stars of the game and the people who dream about becoming a superstar.Basketball is starting to become a global trend with 113 global players being sign to NBA rosters. He originally created the game for his gym class because, it was unbearable outside for any other sports , and the game originally was nonphysical and only had 13 rules. When basketball was first created , there were unlimited players allowed on the court and present day there are only five players per team allowed on the court. Also, the players used a peach basket to shoot a soccer ball into , and present day they use a metal rim with a next and a glass backboard. In the beginning , basketball was only a men's sport until 1892, when Sendra Berenson Abbot, decided to mix things up a little and change the rules so that the girls could play the sport. So, now there are two professional leagues , one for men, and one for women the NBA and WNBA. Women were not allowed any physical contact at all but, today women are extremely physical and some even hit harder than the men. In the year 1896, the first professional game was played and so what the first college game. There were so many changes from the beginning of basketball to now. The way people played has changed dramatically as well as all the rules. The way basketball originated and why it was even thought of is such a shock. Most people don't think of things like this in the midst of needing something instantly, but James Naismith did. Some may ask, "Why was basketball invented?" Well here is the answer.... Not only in the way the game was played but also the way it was designed. When the sport was first designed, there used to be an unlimited amount of players allowed on the court. That was changed to only five players from each team allowed on the court. The amount of time played was changed also. It used to be three, twenty minute quarters and that was changed to four, seven to eight minute quarters. The "post player" comes from an old post that was in the middle of the floor during a game. With that post being there, they would run their opponent into the post and call it a post play. The backboards have probably changed the most, other than the actual basket. The backboards used to be soft wired boards then they were changed to wooden and have changed from wooden to glass/plastic. The basket was a peach basket at the very beginning. It was eventually turned to a cylindrical object with a closed net on the bottom and every time someone made a basket the referee would have to push it out with a long stick. The book also describes when basketball first started, there used to be a jump ball after every basket made. Which drug the game out even longer, until someone made the rule that it goes to the opposing team. The baskets made were only worth one point. Then they eventually were worth only two points. Until someone redrew up the court and made a three point line and anything in front of that was worth two Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 20. A Brief History of Basketball Basketball is a sport played by many individuals throughout the world. The sport was created in December of 1891 by Dr. James Naismith, and has slowly evolved ever since. Originally, the sport was played with a soccer ball and peach baskets, and was of a much slower pace compared to the basketball games of today. By 1906, the peach baskets were replaced with metal hoops and backboards. By the early 19th century, many colleges had adopted basketball as one of their sport. Soon after, high schools began to play basketball due to the little amount of equipment and personnel needed to play the game. Finally, in the late 195os the more basketball–like orange ball was introduced into the sport. The objective of basketball is to shoot a rubber basketball through a hoop with a diameter of 18 inches that stands 10 feet high. Points are awarded to the team depending on where the shot was taken. Shots taken within or on the 3–point line are worth only two points, while shots taken outside the perimeter of the 3–point line are worth 3 points. Wolation of the rules result in fouls in which the opposing team may take free throws worth 1 point from a line that is fifteen feet from the backboard. As previously stated, shots may be taken from many various locations on the court, and various locations have different optimal angle and shooting circumstances. As a former basketball player, I have a personal interest in the importance of the angle at which to shoot a Get more content on HelpWriting.net
