Titled as 'Automotive Tribology ", the concept of this poster presentation was to enlighten my fellow college persons to know the diagnosis/abbreviations behind lubricants used at automotive. We happen to share our knowledge on this field to many onlookers simultaneously enhancing their bond towards this Tribology field and improving my communication skills.

1. INTRODUCTION:
In day to day activities our vehicles undergo lot of external abuse from friction, heat and wear
yet they outperform these barriers by one of the aids i.e., Automotive Oils. This poster briefs
out tribological outline of the practical Motor oil usages, classification and types in them.
Various properties like viscosity, thermal co-efficient and lubricity play vital role in determine
the application of various grades in oil along with additives.
KEYWORDS: Viscosity, Lubricity, Additives, Thermal co-efficient
Conclusions:
 Always refer Service Manual recommended oil grades for vehicles.
 Change engine Oil w.r.t., KM ridden not based on time interval.
 Bad/ unsuited Oil grades can harm the engine components
violently.

SAE: Society Of Automotive Engineers (USA)
API: American Petroleum Institute
ACEA: European Automobile Manufacturers Association
PROPERTY OF MOTOR ENGINE OIL:
• Maintaining lubricity film across moving
parts i.e., optimum viscosity property.
• Property to work under Low and High
Temperature.
• High flash point.
• Maintain high lubricity.
• Have Low Carbon residues.
• Lesser Sulphur content

• 10  Viscosity of Oil @ 00F ( -17.80C)
• W  Winter
• 40  Viscosity of Oil @ 2120F (1000C)
SAE has developed a scale for both engine (motor
oil grades) and transmission oils :
“XX W- YY” - MULTIGRADE
XX: Lower the Viscosity when cold, easy fluid flow
even at low temperatures and the more easily it can
be pumped.
W: Oil suited for regions with colder temperature/
Winter seasons too.
YY: Higher the viscosity when hot, the more viscous
the oil.
Monograde oils such as SAE 30, 40 or 50 are no longer
used in latest automotive engines, but may be required
for use in some vintage and antique engines.
• Mineral Oil : Suited for lower displacement (cc) engine,
low cost & least effective
• Semi-Synthetic Oil: Suited for moderate cc engine,
moderate cost & optimum efficiency
• Synthetic Oil : Expensive, best for all cc engine ,presence
of additives, gives best engine performance 10W30 - All scooters (DUET, ACTIVA,
WEGO) Splendor, Platina, etc.,
