world, its V10 engine is 
considered to be one of the 
most fascinating drive 
concepts featured in a 
production car
This technological masterpiece does 
not only sport the same number of 
cylinders as its Formula 1 BMW 
Williams F1 racing counterpart, but 
also shares its high-revving concept
The V10 is the only high-revving power unit to be featured in a series-production 
car. The M5's engine has ten cylinders, a cubic capacity of 5 
litres and produces a maximum output of 507 bhp and a maximum torque 
of 520 Newton metres

A V10 Engine? 
A V10 engine is an internal combustion engine with 10 
cylinders. The engine has five cylinders on each side called 
banks. The two banks form a "V" shaped angle. All ten pistons 
turn in a common crankshaft. 
A V10 can be powered by different types of fuels, including 
gasoline, diesel and natural gas. 
It is more powerful and with more torque than a V8 engine, but 
also lighter than a V12. 
V10 engines are mostly used in exotic and sportive cars.
A V10 Engine?
Main Characteristics 
The BMW 5-liter V10 is derived from BMW Formula 1 team, after 
Formula 1 banned V10 engines and start using V8 engines in 
2005. 
It was used on BMW M5 and M6 cars

This engine, particularly, is build entirely from aluminum. 
It is highly compact and extremely light.
Main Characteristics(cont.) 
It uses DOHC, which means double overhead camshaft. It is 
characterized by two camshafts located within the cylinder 
head, one operating the intake valves and one operating the 
exhaust valves. 
It uses a multi point fuel injection system. This injection system 
delivers the exact correct amount of fuel to each engine cylinder 
at the correct time. A multi-point system uses one injector for 
each cylinder, typically mounted right where the manifold meets 
the cylinder head.

Fuel Comsuption and

The BMW 5.0L V10 has a combined fuel comsuption of 
14.8 l/100 km 
It is actually a low value compared to the high output of the 
engine and to other engines with the same power output. 
Besides the high performance, the engine is also both Euro 
4 and US LEV2 emission levels compliant. Which means 
the level of emissions are greatly reduced.

This is particularly the case with the new M5: across the world, its V10 engine is considered to be one of the most fascinating drive concepts featured in a production car

  • 12. A V10 Engine? A V10 engine is an internal combustion engine with 10 cylinders. The engine has five cylinders on each side called banks. The two banks form a "V" shaped angle. All ten pistons turn in a common crankshaft. A V10 can be powered by different types of fuels, including gasoline, diesel and natural gas. It is more powerful and with more torque than a V8 engine, but also lighter than a V12. V10 engines are mostly used in exotic and sportive cars.
  • 14. Main Characteristics The BMW 5-liter V10 is derived from BMW Formula 1 team, after Formula 1 banned V10 engines and start using V8 engines in 2005.   • 15. Main Characteristics(cont.) It uses DOHC, which means double overhead camshaft. It is characterized by two camshafts located within the cylinder head, one operating the intake valves and one operating the exhaust valves. It uses a multi point fuel injection system. This injection system delivers the exact correct amount of fuel to each engine cylinder at the correct time. A multi-point system uses one injector for each cylinder, typically mounted right where the manifold meets the cylinder head. High compression ratio, 12:1 Average fuel consumption

Design and Materials V-shape engines provide more power output It is a compact, light and efficient V-shape engine with 10 cilinders The angle of the V-shape is 90 degrees and this makes it more compact. Most parts of the engine are made from alluminum, which makes it lighter Double Overhead Camshaft allows a wider angle between intake and exhaust valves. This allows more air to flow which mean more power output. This design reduces valvetrain inertia since the rocker arms are eliminated.

Power and Torque High power output (507 HP) and good torque(520 Nm) High-revving normally aspirated engine with a red line of 8250 rpm 100 HP per liter output, its specific output being on par with that of racing cars. 25 per cent increased performance than its predecessor engine. Fuel Comsuption and Emissions The BMW 5.0L V10 has a combined fuel comsuption of 14.8 l/100 km It is actually a low value compared to the high output of the engine and to other engines with the same power output. Besides the high performance, the engine is also both Euro 4 and US LEV2 emission levels compliant. Which means the level of emissions are greatly reduced.
