2. Water is one of the key ingredients that is widely used in pharmaceutical industries
for the formulation, processing and production of pharmaceutical products. It is
known that pharmaceutical products are consumed by human beings as parenteral
or non-parenteral drugs and hence the quality of these products has to be
maintained so that the consumer doesn’t get sick or face any health problems.
Generally, water is passed through a purified water system before using it for
further processing or formulation. Water gets contaminated when it goes through
distribution and storage processes. Microbial organisms present in the water can
increase rapidly degrading the quality of water during storage and distribution
processes.
Water used for pharmaceutical purposes is usually extracted from normal drinking
water and continuous validation of the water is required to maintain the quality of
water and to produce high-quality water.
3. To produce high-quality water, water is passed through different water purification
systems or purified water system. There are majorly four types of purified water
systems known as distillation, filtration, reverse osmosis and ion exchange. The pure
water generated from these purified water systems is used both for the production
of pharmaceutical products and for the cleaning of pharmaceutical equipment by
using CIP and SIP procedures.
Let us discuss a few of the purified water systems in short.
Ion exchange: In an ion exchange process, the ions present in the impure water are
exchanged with that of pure water ions with the help of an external electric current
supply. The impure ions present in the water are filtered out from the impure water
and are later replaced by new ions with the help of an ion exchange resin.
Reverse-Osmosis: In reverse-osmosis, the pressure is applied to the water
concentration. Due to this pressure, water starts to flow from a more concentrated
solution to a less concentrated solution. Although reverse osmosis purifies the
water effectively, still it can be fouled by microbial organisms. To get good results,
RO systems must be cleaned regularly.
