Let's hop into our time machine to see how challenging making a pair of clog was in past. The transition from the technique employed in the past to the present.
2. Introduction
Most modern Swedish clogs for men and women are
manufactured industrially.
Huge machinery and automated production are often used
for making different types of clogs with high degree of
precision.
In the past, most of the work was done by hand and tools.
The following slides lay out the basic steps of making a pair
of clogs as done before the advent of industrialization.
3. Obtaining Raw Materials
Unlike most modern Swedish clogs for men and women, clogs
of the past were made entirely of wood.
The raw material, wood, was carefully sourced from the forests
and lumbering camps as per as the quality.
Raw lumber is generally preferred to be directly shaped into
clogs.
4. Laying the Outlines
The chosen wooden log would be then trimmed to a more
accessible size.
Then blocks of the same dimensions as the clogs would be then
cut out from the trimmed log.
These blocks are then shaped into clogs as per as the required
size.
5. Shaping Into Clogs
Sharp cutting tools were then used to shape the outer portion of
the clogs and give them shape.
A pair of clogs were always shaped together to have more
evenness across both the clogs.
The next step is carving the inner portion of the clogs.
6. Cutting the Inner Portion
A small hand tool (later replaced by a cutting machine) was
used to cut out the inner part of clogs.
It required extremely skillful work as bits and pieces of wood left
behind could injure the foot of the wearer.
The entire pair is polished by a sandpaper to
7. Finishing and Designing
The clogs are left out in the sun to dry for a few days to
harden them naturally.
The finished clogs are then painted with varnish or paints to
protect wood from rotting.
The can also be waterproofed or designed with intricate
carvings and designs.
