2. BRIEF OVERVIEW
Epilepsy is a CNS brain
disorder that causes recurring,
unprovoked seizures.
Patients suffering from
epilepsy, display sudden jerks,
unusual behaviour and sometimes
loss of awareness.
it is caused due to
uncontrolled electric
disturbances in the brain.
EPILEPSY
EEG is the procedure used for
diagnosing brain disorders,
especially Epilepsy.
it causes no discomfort to the
patient.
Sleep EEG is when patients are
made to sleep during the
procedure so that abnormal
brain activity can be easily
detected.
EEG
3. I had the wonderful opportunity to
partake in an internship at a hospital
in the Neurology Department, while
completing this course.I observed the
EEG procedure as well as the Nerve
Conduction Study, I learned that EEG was
especially useful for patients of
various ages suffering from epilepsy.
The course touched upon the topic of
epilepsy, hence prompting me to choose
this topic for the final project.
PERSONAL RELEVANCE
SINCE 2017
4. CAUSES
Epilepsy is likely to be inherited.
About 40% of epilepsy cases occur
due to inheritance
Tumours, Alzheimer's, Strokes,
Tuberous schlerosis, AIDS, Viral
Encephalitis, meningitis etc.
Heavy alcohol & Drug use
injury during, before or after birth.
Head or brain traume
5. During the procedure I observed that
electrodes were placed on the skull of
the patient. Patients, especially
children were made to sleep so that the
sleep waves ie slow wave sleep and REM
sleep could be recorded. In epileptic
patients, abnormal spindles and waves
could be observed.
ELECTROENCEPHALOGRAM
EEG
6. learning about sleep structure in
week 9, gave me a deeper
understanding of sleep EEG
It helped me relate theoretical
and practical knowledge
It broadened & strengthened my
knowledge on brain anatomy!
It encouraged me to carry out
research on Sleep patterns.
HOW THE COURSE HELPED !
