This document defines and describes 5 types of families: nuclear families consisting of parents and children; extended families with multiple generations living together; single-parent families with one parent and children; sibling households where older siblings care for younger ones; and reorganized families formed when one spouse has had a previous relationship bringing in children from that. It concludes by asking the reader to identify which type of family they belong to.

2. 1. Nuclear Family

• The nuclear family consists of a mother, father and their
children living under the same roof.

3. 2. Extended Family
• Consists of members which extend beyond a mother, father
and their children. Several generations may live together
under the same roof eg. Grandparents, cousins, uncles etc.

4. Single-Parent Family
• Consists of only one parent living with his/her child or
children.

5. Sibling household
• A relatively new category, where both parents are working
and older brothers and sisters take care of younger ones.

6. Reorganized Family
• This type of family is formed when one of the spouses may
have had an earlier relationship. Children from the previous
relationship join in the family. Children therefore have half
brothers and half sisters.
