The Big Stick Policy
The Big Stick Policy "Speak softly and carry a big stick," this was the slogan that president
Theodore Roosevelt Used to describe the Big Stick policy. This sentence led to the foreign policy
that Roosevelt deployed during his presidency hence the name "Big Stick" Policy. This policy meant
that the U.S. should be fair in its dealings with other countries but must always be ready to protect
its own interests or in other word negotiating peacefully while simultaneously threatening with the
"big stick", or the military. Roosevelt first used the phrase in a speech at the Minnesota State Fair on
September 2, 1901, twelve days before the assassination of President William McKinley, which
subsequently thrust him into the Presidency. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Personal Reflection Of Personal Ethics In The Classroom
I am one of the numerous amount of students enrolled in your class and most likely, you have no
idea who I am. I am hopeful that this letter will apprise you about my personality, work ethic, and
other characteristics.
When I was younger, I enjoyed being constantly active; whether that be hanging off the couch while
watching T.V. or running around my house yelling incoherent phrases to drive my mother insane, I
did it all. One day, I stumbled upon a video of a girl teaching the viewer how to do a skill named the
back handspring (a skill where you push off from an upright standing position into vertical back
onto your feet to complete a full rotation). In awe, it inspired me to attempt it myself, until I realized
it took a lot more to flip backwards and expect to land on your hands without falling onto your face.
I can recall myself watching a plethora of these varieties of videos in where people demonstrated
how to do different certain skills. I would be fascinated by the idea that you can maneuver your
body to do tricks that most people would not dare to attempt. Not long after that, I begged to try out
and, to my amazement, ended up making it into what would become my gymnastics team.
When I first began, I was not prepared for the amount of work that was required of the individual,
both physically and mentally. I remember the first practice I attended was one of my most
exhausting. Being a newcomer to such an intense sport, it allowed many, many mistakes. The quote

Sugar Stick Amphibians
Living beings adjust to their surroundings, frequently quickly, regardless of whether these situations
are common or are affected by human action. Seeing how the procedures of determination and
development happen in perfect and modified conditions is key to deciding how to lessen the
unfriendly effects of people on common differing qualities and profitability (Greenlees, 2015).

Popsticle Sticks
Our boat is in a square shape so that the pennies can equally balance in each corner and the center.
As seen on page 14 the material that makes up the boat are popsticle sticks because they seem to be
stronger. If they're stronger they will be able to hold more pennies. The popsticles have a length of
11 cm, we decided to have this size because we couldn't add another roll of popsticle sticks since we
were going to exceed our budget which was $1, 500.00 (page 12). If we include the propeller, the
length of the boat would be 19 cm (page 9), due to the paper clip and wooden stick being added
between the straw as seen on page 18. Me and my partner chose this deisgn because we wanted to
create an innovative propeller, so we used straws, paper clips,

The Influence Of Popsicle Sticks
So for my math activity I choose to pick an easy 1st grade activity, and I am interested in teaching
1st grade. The activity requires the teacher to get Popsicle sticks, write on them from 1–20 and on
the other the plus, minus and equal signs. And do addition and subtraction using those Popsicle
sticks. The general principle of development states that all people develop at different rates, for
some students this will be an easy task, they are more mature in their thinking, and they are above
the average. Some students will struggle, they will be much slower in development and because of
that it can affect their school studies. Also people development is in an order, the advanced student
will most likely be doing well in all other subjects,

Essay about Demonstrative Cake Pop Speech
Outline For Demonstration Speech
Topic: Cake Pops
General Purpose: To demonstrate
Specific Purpose: To demonstrate to my audience how to make a delicious and simple cake pop.
Thesis: I will be demonstrating how to make a
I. Introduction:
A. Attention Getter: In 2012 Starbucks made over $13.29 billion dollars. With that amount of money
you could buy eight billion, eight hundred and sixty million of their cake pops. Though that seems
like enough cake pops to satisfy anyones appitite I highly doubt that most of us have thirteen billion
dollars to spend. B. Credibility: According to newspressnow.com, last updated May 8th 2012 "The
start of the cake–pop frenzy has been attributed to a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If I wanted a picture I'd buy a painting."
The second part is where the fun part actually starts, you're going to add one or two heaping
spoonfuls of regular white frosting to the crumbled up cake you have.
Keep adding frosting until you get the consistency pretty doughy, but still firm enough to handle.
After kneeding the dough thoroughly you're going to want to roll the dough out inch size balls.
A normal box of cake mix should make about 20 cake pops.
After all the balls are rolled out, they should go in the fridge or freezer for about a half an hour to
help them set. After those agonizing thirty minutes are up, you're able to take the cake pops out of
the refrigerator or freezer, and then melt some almond bark.
After dipping the stick in the almond bark, you're going to want to stick it about halfway through the
now official "cake pop".
The chocolate on the stick is to help the stick stay sturdy while you actually eat the sweet treat.
When you've finished putting the sticks into each of the cake balls, you should put them back into
the refrigerator in order to help the chocolate solidify.
Transition:
The last part we're going to focus on is probably the most simple. Decorating the cake pop.
Using the previously melted almond bark, you can simply dip the cake pop in and spread a thin
layer of chocolate all around the pop.
While the chocolate is still wet, feel free to decorate in any way you'd like. For today I just used
simple sprinkles but there

My Father And My Brother
As a child, my brother Jean and I were not always very close, even though we are fairly close in age.
As children, we went to school together and grew up learning the importance of family values,
particularly the meaning of "sticking together." Every day we walked to school together. Before we
ventured off to elementary school, our mother would say, "Stick together, and Jean, listen to your
big brother!" Even though I was only two years older than Jean, I knew I was responsible if
anything bad were to happen to him under my watch. My brother and I were quite daring as children
and did not always follow all the rules. Also, Jean was more stubborn than I and did not know when
the time for play should stop. I will never forget that one frightful day when the lesson about the
value of my family and sticking together changed my life. It was a warm day towards the end of the
school year, and everyone was anxious to start summer vacation. Throughout the day at the
elementary school, I would see Jean about two times a day. Close to the end of the day, and the
sunlight beaming into my fifth–grade classroom felt like a hundred degrees. Before we could leave,
our teacher Ms. Harris wanted to give us a short vocabulary quiz. When she started to pass out the
quiz, I was thinking of ways to get out of the assignment. At that very moment, something very
frightening happened. All of a sudden, the sound of shuffling papers was violently interrupted by a

Glow Sticks Experiment
This experiment is about glow sticks so here are some facts. Let's talk about glowsticks and
everything about them. Light is generated from a chemical reaction which is called
chemiluminescence. Typical glow sticks use a hydrogen peroxide solution, a solution of phenyl
oxalate ester, and a fluorescent dye. Glow sticks are plastic tubes containing glass vials that emit
light when they are cracked/ bent. They have a glow time from 6–12 hours. It also depends on the
size of the glow stick and other stuff like that. Glow sticks are also waterproof if you did not already
know that. Energy created by the chemical reaction is what creates the color. If glow sticks did not
have fluorescent dye there would be no color. Glow sticks might look like they

Case Analysis
Case brief and overview:
Sher–Wood (formerly Sherwood–Drolet) has been a well–known Canadian hockey equipment
manufacturer since 1949 (Zhang & Beamish, 2011, p. 23), predominantly specialising in wooden
sticks for players from the National Hockey League down to players at the junior level. Sher–Wood
also produces composite sticks, albeit at a much lower volume.
Whilst hockey stick production has traditionally been based in North America, over the last decade
there has been a significant shift towards global sourcing in the industry (Zhang & Beamish, 2011,
p.21). This has been driven by a desire to access low–cost factors of production, secure cheaper
material resources, and ultimately gain a competitive advantage.
Sher–Wood's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In comparison, Sher–Wood offers specific products for a niche market. Despite this, Sher–Wood
offers 27 models of player and goalie sticks – a considerably large amount for a company with a
global market share of approximately 2% (Zhang & Beamish, 2011, p. 20).
Secondly, composite sticks have been the dominant stick used among NHL players over the past
decade (Zhang & Beamish, 2011, p.18), and as such have grown rapidly in popularity amongst
children and amateur players (Zhang & Beamish, 2011, p.19). Despite the fact that Sher–Wood
anticipates the composite stick business to grow in volume and profitability, there is a sufficient
imbalance between market demand and Sher–Wood's product output, since wooden sticks still
account for approximately half of their hockey stick models. (Zhang & Beamish, 2011, p. 24)
Further to this, Sher–Wood's brand image and reputation are diminishing. This was affected by the
loss of NHL star Jason Spezza to rival Reebok in 2008 in objection to the company's outsourcing to
China (Zhang & Beamish, 2011, p. 23). Currently only 2.3% of NHL players use Sherwood sticks
(Exhibit 1, Zhang & Beamish, 2011, p. 20). This is a concern for Sher–Wood, especially since
"hockey sticks endorsed by professional hockey players enjoyed a strong position in the hocket stick
market." (Zhang & Beamish, 2011, p. 19) Related to this issue is the fact that the market is showing
signs of maturity, and

Aesop: The Bundle Of Sticks
For this week reading assignment, I had chosen to read a tale from Aesop's collection. Aesop was a
seventh century BC Greek story–teller whose witty short tales have entertained and instructed
countless of generations of young students. For example, my Grammar school teacher presented me
a collection of his tales as a birthday gift, one and a half score years ago. Aesop was eminently
popular in the Roman–Byzantine world; his tales were a required reading in grammar school
curricula (Herrin, 2009). Traces of his tales can be discerned even in the "Sayings of the [Monastic]
Elders" (Gerondikon); in fact, the story I have chosen to read is recorded as having been reenacted
in real life by a wise dying ancient monk in Egypt.
My chosen story is called "The Bundle of Sticks" (Aesop) which is about a father of three sons who
did not get along very well. The father–being on the point of death and still worried about his sons–
asked them to break a bundle of sticks. Understandably, none of the three sons were able to break it.
"Unbundle it," the father said. The sons did so. "Now each try to ... Show more content on

As a matter of fact, the Aesopeian tales do not even speak in terms of "virtue" and "vice"
(Zafiropoulos, 2001); instead, they tend to illustrate a causative relationship between life choices
and consequences– you do this and you get that. As a I was re–reading the story today, it dawned on
me that this idea–that we make our own bed–was a recurring pattern in the classical Greek and
Byzantine way of thinking; consider, for example, Apostle Paul words: "for the wages of sin is
death" (Rom 6:23 KJV). Anecdotally, this is how I was raised as well–that I should carefully
consider the possible consequences before setting in a course of action. Shrewd person she was, my

That Tally Stick
So many people have keepsakes to symbolize their love for one another. Couples have pictures and
mementos to remind them of their special times. In "The Tally Stick", Jarold Ramsey introduces us
to a couple who use a tally stick rather than pictures to represent what is important in their lives.
Ramsey takes us from the beginning of the relationship, when the stick is bare, to the end when it is
carved end to end. We learn of the outside events that build their love, as well as internal measure,
upon which their love is built. According to Ramsey the stick is a part of the couple's relationship.
The tally stick shows that love can be a long–lasting bond defined by failure and success that
strengthen their relationship. Before there is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"Our tally stick is whittled nearly end to end; delicate as scrimshaw, it would not bear you up" (20).
Ramsey mentions that the stick is polished with regrets. Because they both have regrets that helped
build their love, the couple clusters those regrets with all other mishaps "hand over hand" (22). The
author ends the poem with the couple looking back on everything they have done. Running their
fingers from beginning to end they will explore everything that shaped their relationship and forgive
each other's regrets. Ramsey refers to their blameless eyes, telling us that the two no longer blame
one another and can go on loving through old age. Starting from when they were children, they
follow the grain all the way to adulthood and "talk softly as of ordinary matters and in one another's
blameless eyes go blind" (27). "The Tally Stick" is symbolic of everything this couple shares with
each other. It not only shows special occasions like a picture but tells a detailed story of their life
together. The couple relives the significant times they spent together by running their thumbs
through the intricate notches. Detailed depictions of their wedding, the births of their children, the
tragedies they have gone through can all be found within the stick. This stick defines the
relationship, and is part of the each of them. The marks indicating internal events are the ones that
remain special and are intricately drawn, where as the historic actions are just

Freedom of Speech is possibly the most respected American ideal. Envied by citizens of countries
where self–expression is a right of some and stricken from others, we uphold this concept with
defensive pride. However, we must ask ourselves if this freedom can ever go too far. When does
lenience turn into naivety? If speech is abused so freely that it enslaves the minds of another should
it become a privilege, rather than a right? In his essay "On Racist Speech", Charles R. Lawrence III
argues for limitations on Freedom of Speech as described in the First Amendment to prevent only
the most heinous racial remarks. While I understand why many Americans initially find limiting
freedom of speech contradictory to the concept of our free states, ... Show more content on

Some citizens opposed a restriction on speech simply because they feel it is not a complete
upholding of American law. However, we must decide whether the restriction of free speech for
protection is entirely acceptable or not at all because responses are often inherently hypocritical.
While opposition will often argue that racial comments cause no harm and are a right of the First
Amendment, the same people may argue for restrictions of free speech in other circumstances. It is
likely that the majority of people oppose allowing pedophiles the right to express their sexual
feelings to a child over the internet, which is already a legally enforced restriction on freedom of
speech. Although there may be no physical contact between the child and the pedophile, it is
important to parents that their children are protected from the possibility of such a threat as well as
any emotional distress caused by inappropriate comments. Further examples are found in
government views on sexism in the workplace. How much can we restrict the class of people we
defend before our laws become just as prejudice as the injustice they attempt to cease? Lawrence
reminds us that the "Supreme Court... held that sexual harassment that creates a hostile or abusive
work environment violates the ban on sex discrimination in employment of Title VII of the Civil
Rights Act of 1964." (64); the same Title "prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color,

Today is my dad's birthday! I know that we are inviting some close friends over to celebrate his
special day, but no one is here at the moment. Because none of my friends have shown up, I begin to
play by myself. I know they are coming but I thought they would be here by now. I am lonely and I
wish someone was here to play with me. As people are filling the yard, I am not recognizing any of
the adults at the party. As of now, I am alone so I take my dog Goldie out to the deepest part of my
backyard.

As I wonder when the cake will be served, I look back to my house. I continue playing with the
sticks that are in front of me. Since I am by myself, I try to stack the sticks on top of one another.
Bored, I walk through my yard to see if I recognize anyone. I find a huge stick on the ground, which
grabs my attention. I always love clearing out the backyard with sticks so I continue on my way. As
I pick up the stick, I swing it around like a sword. I find the perfect spot to start whacking at the
weeds, until I hear footsteps behind me. Who could that be? I thought Goldie was the only one with
me. I still hear the footsteps.

Father In Sticks
The father in "Sticks" seemed like a tough love kind of father. Often at times, possibly too tough.
Personally, I grew up with a very relaxed father that had very few rules. As long as I was home by
curfew, did my own laundry, did the dishes three times a week after supper and kept my room clean,
he was content and happy. I was only grounded one time in my childhood by him and he spanked
me one time when I was a small child. I always felt he was someone I could run to when I needed it
and I feel that a lot of his parenting traits are now my parenting traits. I feel I am friendly but firm.
However, my father in law is a lot like the father in this short story. Very stict and I can guarantee he

The author stated that, "We left home, married, had children of our own, found the s eeds of

responsible adults. My husband has told me many times stories on how tough he had it with his
father growing up, especially over his sisters but he still loves and respects his father. I believe my
father in law being so tough on my husband and making him start working on a farm with him at the
age of 8 has made my husband the hard worker that he is today. He has taken a lot of the traits that
he thought were beneficial to his life and uses the same with our children and omits the ones that he
felt were to harsh growing up. I sometimes wonder if my fasther in law feels somewhat like the
author sometimes because he is especially nice and lets his grandchildren get away with things he

Battle Of Horseshoe Bend Strengths And Weaknesses
The Battle of Horseshoe Bend illustrated some important lessons that are as applicable to today's
military operational environments as they were back then These lessons are timeless. Studying this
battle can help leaders and Commanders identify strengths and weakness that lead to mission
success and enemy defeat. General Andrew Jackson had engaged the enemy Creek Indians in
previous battles. He was able to learn valuable lessons and make adjustments to ensure that the
Battle of Horseshoe Bend achieved his operational objectives and had the desired end state for
mission success.
Armies cannot sustain or conduct combat operations without effective logistical supply lines. Lack
of supplies lead to poor morale and capitulation of forces. Jackson led several campaigns against the
Creek Indians prior to the Battle of Horseshoe Bend but could not accomplish his operational
objectives due to a lack of supplies and long supply lines. In the winter of 1814, Jackson suffered
great losses when he led an Army of inexperienced, undisciplined and under supplied forces to fight
the Red Sticks at Emuckfau and Enotochopco. He barely escaped with his life and was forced to
retreat to Fort Strother.
After winter, in March of 1814, Jackson left Fort Strother with the intent to extend supply lines by
building a new fort which came to be known as Fort Williams. This fort was closer to Horseshoe
bend and General Jackson was determined to achieve victory and defeat the Red Sticks at the

How I Build A Teepee Fire
Data gathered from the National Vital Statistics System says that from 1999 to 2011, a total of
16,911 deaths in the United States for an average of 1,301 deaths per year that was associated with
exposure to excessive natural cold. Many of these deaths could have been prevented if a fire was
built to warm the victim, or a signal for help. In the following paragraphs I will explain how to build
a teepee fire to whomever is reading this. It will cover all the basic skills and techniques needed to
build a successful tepee fire. I will also give some tips and tricks I've learned over the years.
Frist off to build a fire I need to gather my materials. These materials are as follows: a lighter, rocks,
a place to build the fire, some wood of all different sizes, a pocketknife, and about two handfuls of a
tinder. So now you must be wondering what tinder is? Well it's simple; tinder is a material that you
light to start a fire. Tinder is also considered to be stage one in the fire building process. Which
means it's the first material in the fire to burn, and it needs to light the next level. Materials that can
be used as tinder is newspaper, dryer lint, hay, and cardboard.
You also may be wondering why a pocketknife. Well it's so that if I need to cut something I have a
tool for the job. So after I gather up a lighter, pocketknife, and about two handfuls of tinder. I need
to find a place to build the fire. It should be a place where there is somewhat level ground, and is at

All Quiet On The Western Front Comradeship Analysis
"We all share the same fear and the same life;we are nearer than lovers, in a simpler, a harder way;I
could bury my face in them, in these voices, these words that have saved me and will stand by me".
Comradeship is vital in war, because it keeps soldiers human. The theme of comradeship in All
Quiet on the Western Front is embraced when the soldiers rescue each other during battle, stick
together and not become separated, and keep each other's spirits up in the darkest of days.
Soldiers rescuing each other during battle shows comradeship. While fighting on the front line, Paul
becomes separated from his comrades and cannot search for them for fear of being shot down. "It is
Kat and Albert who have come out with a stretcher to look for me," (Remarque 227). Paul's friends
coming to search for him shows comradeship because they are being brave and risking their lives to
find their friend. Going out to look for Paul shows that they care about and value him. During a
bombardment, new recruits are traumatized, scared, and helpless because they do not know what to

but to save human souls. Comradeship is embraced by soldiers rescuing and teaching each other

Grit Essay
The Power Of Grit I chose the Ted Talk called Grit and perseverance. In this video Angela Lee
Duckworth argues that the key to success is grit, a characteristic she defines as "passion and
perseverance for very long–term goals"(Angela Duckworth). she talks about how having
perseverance can motivate and change the outcome of your life and career. You don't have to be
perfect physically or have a High IQ, all you need is Grit and perseverance. Life can be very
difficult at times it will slam you on the ground roll you in the dirt and kick you in the ribs all at
once. Being able to get back up is the reason people can be successful. Having perseverance and
show great ethics and starting at the bottom being poorer than dirt will give you ... Show more

The question she asked and wanted to find out is who will succeed and why. Every study they did
she would notice that it's not the highest IQ who is successful but its who has the most grit and
perseverance. Grit is sticking to your long–term goals despite all the noise around you. The fact that
not everyone in your life will support you in reaching your goals is a harsh reality. It's hard to
understand that even some of your best friends and close family could actually be holding you back
but once you cut that tie and push yourself you can be so much more successful. Personally I think
the most successful people in life are the ones that can set A goal and not let anyone change their
mind or run them a stray from their goal. This Ted Talk can help people even in their day to day life,
if someone can set small goals throughout their day and make sure they stick to them. At times it's
really hard to stick to goals especially long term. However if you can it will help you succeed in
everyday life and long term like finishing college. College can be a great place for a study to happen
but it can also be very bad, because there is so much diversity but generally unmotivated people
don't even go to college but if they do they can't stick it out because they have no perseverance. As
soon as something hard comes along they quite and then try to protest it. Having Goals however can
be very overwhelming. Many people set long term goals and work toward them

The Power Of Desire In A & P By John Updike
Within the story "A&P" by John Updike, the main character Sammy is portrayed as a shy optimistic
young teenager working at a grocery store. But a sudden life changing event happens and Sammy
takes charge just as anyone else would. Three pretty young girls walk into the grocery store, in only
bathing suits, just as any guy would feel the urge to stare or even talk to them, he takes action by
sticking up for them as they are getting thrown out of the store resulting in him quitting his job. This
action we see would be the power of desire which is the theme throughout this story. In society
today we tend to see lots of people especially teens afraid to stick up for what they believe in. With
the power of desire, it builds up confidence, shows maturity in the coming of ages, and it even
proves you can do what you believe in. If everyone had this much confidence like Sammy, our
world may be a stronger place. Being confident is very essential in life and it is something many
people tend to lack for many reasons. Some could be self–conscious in physical appearance or even
believe they are not good enough. This strong confidence is strongly shown in the story based on the
girl's appearances. For example, "The sheep pushing their carts down the aisle – the girls were
walking against the usual traffic (not that we have one–way signs or anything) – were pretty
hilarious. You could see them, when Queenie's white shoulders dawned on them, kind of jerk, or
hop, or hiccup, but their eyes

The Thing on the Stick
The Thing on the Stick What would happen if a group of school boys were stranded on an island,
with no adults? What would they do? These are some of the questions posed in William Golding's
Lord of the Flies, where a group of British school boys are stranded on a small, deserted island, and
where order slowly breaks down into chaos and savagery. Even though the movie adaption of Lord
of the Flies changes many elements of the story, they both still demonstrate the same theme of evil
in human nature.
In the book, there is a scene where Simon is speaking to the Lord of the Flies, who is actually a pig's
head stuck on a stake, and it tells him that he is the evil inside of them all, and he is the reason why
everything is going bad. Simon is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the movie, the pilot of the plane is injured, and the boys are discussing killing him or tying him
up, because they are scared of him. The pilot received a severe head injury when the plane went

and Simon is the only one that can go near him. "A little'un said 'I'm scared of him, He's crazy.'

ourselves.' This was followed by a murmur of agreement." This scene is particularly important
because the boys are presented with a defenseless person, who they are scared of, and thinking of
restraining him or killing him. Even Ralph, who is supposed to be the fair leader, wants to restrain
him, and Jack and Roger want to kill him, to which Ralph offers no opposition. This reveals evil
because they are thinking about murder for the unsubstantial reason that they have negative feelings
for him, and that the pilot is subconsciously reluctant to have the boys near him. The pilot doesn't
want other boys near him because he somehow

This is a low incidence report compared to the United States reporting six million healthcare

Essay on Barn Burning
Use of Blood in "Barn Burning"
"Barn Burning" is about the struggle of a boy to do what is right during the Post Civil War era. The
main character, Sartoris Snopes, is a poor son of a migrant tenant farmer. In the opening scene he is
being asked by a circuit judge about the burning of a farmer's barn by his father. The boy does not
tell on his father and is not forced to do so, but he thinks that he would have done so had he been
asked. The father, Abner Snopes, served in the Civil War for both sides and has difficulty venting his
anger. Usually he does so through the burning of other people's barns when they wrong him. The
symbol of blood is used by Faulkner to contribute to the theme of loyalty to the ... Show more

Mine and hisn both! He's my father"(481). Here this shows that the father has done this before and
the boy is used to dealing with it.
The use of blood is also utilized when the father explains that the family must stick together.
Following the courthouse scene the boy and his father talk about the incident and Abner states, "You
got to learn to stick to your own blood or you ain't going to have any blood to stick to you"(484). In
saying this, it is almost as if he is trying to convince the boy to lie for his own blood.
The boy despises his father for all the horrible things he has done to people in the past, yet he still
sticks up for him. After Abner has deliberately destroyed Major DeSpain's expensive imported rug
his son states, "You done the best you could", "If he wanted hit done different why didn't he wait
and tell you how?"(488). Thus providing evidence that the boy still has some respect for his "blood",
and though he is against his father's actions he still supports them because he is family.
Faulkner's use of blood contributes to the theme of loyalty to the family in several ways. Throughout
the short story there are many references to loyalty and sticking to your own blood. "Barn Burning"
is a very in–depth short story and had to be read carefully in order to obtain the full meaning and

The Cow Taught Me How
The Cow Taught Me How
"Life is dangerous, that's what makes it interesting." – John Twelve Hawks
The best thing I ever did for myself was throw a stick at a cow. Not an overly extravagant
accomplishment, but I certainly learned a lot from it. Just a little over six years into the world, on a
day so hot I could practically taste burnt air, my father took my two sisters and me down to the barn.
It wasn't the most attractive place in the world, but to my eyes it was an adventure waiting to
happen. Amid mountainous hay bales and rolling seas of grass, I eagerly awaited the chance to seek
out every little thing in this field.
As soon as dad set us loose to explore, he began to cut a few trees down to make firewood. I sprung

My dad was out of reach; with his chainsaw in hand and the concentration he was using to cut down
trees for kindling, it was unlikely he'd hear me yelling for him. I tried anyway. "Dad!" I called,
cupping my hands around my mouth. I tried again and again, but I didn't succeed. Eventually, I
resorted to crossing my arms and huffing in annoyance. Now it was all up to me. It was almost like a
superhero set–up –– I, the favored protagonist, the cows the nefarious villains, and my sisters the
damsels in distress. My feet bounded forward in a blaze of six year old glory. The glitzy rainbows
on my tennis shoes shone in the sun, my ponytail whipped my face, and my body moved onwards;
ready for action. With careful precision I scanned the ground, looking for some sort of weapon.
Since there isn't much of an arsenal in a cow field, I sought out a stick. And what a wonderful stick
it was! The pair of hands that usually picked up toys and Cheerios snatched the small branch.
Putting my entire body into motion, I let my weapon fly. My body's momentum sent it in a direct
line; hurtling towards the target. My throw was decently aimed, and the stick struck home on an
unfortunate cow's behind. Time crawled to a stop and the branch seemed to hang in the air for a
moment before clattering to the ground. One beat of silence. Two. Suddenly, the beast turned its
head, black eyes seemingly pinning me in place. I probably would've started crying and begging for
mercy had I not

Short Story: Gilligan's Island
Greg lay unconscious at the base of Sailor rock for nearly four hours. He woke to a raging headache
that pounded through his skull and pain in his leg, so horrific, it had to be hell. When he worked up
the courage to look at his leg, he wished he hadn't. His shin bent in half, jutting unnaturally to the
side–the remaining bone, the fibula, was now broken as well.
The precise splinting of *this* break was now more crucial than ever. Greg gathered the sticks and
ties from the old splint that lay scattered about. Knowing the pain that would be coming, he put a
soft stick between his teeth, and took a slow deep breath. The torture of straightening out the bones
began, one bone at a time, and he completely bit through the stick.

The entire night he wrestled in his sleep, delirious in pain. At some point, his mind shut off and he
was able to drift into sleep.
He dreamt of horses and the hoofbeats stopping at the base of Sailor Rock, just as the day before. He
fought frantically to get to them, but still being asleep, it was only in his head. That is until a man's
voice shouted in the distance and another's shouted back. Greg suddenly awoke and bolted upright,
banging his head on the cave's low ceiling. The voices were real, the hoofbeats were real–but they
were leaving.
Shouting as loud as he could, Greg pulled himself out of the cave, determined not to miss them. He
cried out in acute desperate pain, and his leg screamed back at him as he pulled himself on his
stomach across the rock calling out to them the whole

Theme Of Sticks And Stones
Sticks and Stones
The title of this short story derives from the nursery rhyme: "Sticks and stones may break my bones
/ But words will never hurt me". The theme of the rhyme is to ignore name–calling and other vicious
attempts to vocally harm a person, since words will never get to them like physical violence will
(i.e. broken bones). However, the theme of the short story proves otherwise. Lewis, the main
character, was bullied as a child. He's damaged from the experience – both mentally and physically.
Even though his bullies never technically laid a finger on him, his life has been shaped by their
actions. In this case, and many others, words have definitely hurt him.
The story follows three perspectives: present–day Lewis, Lewis as a ... Show more content on

4, l. 28): Considering the bullies never touched Lewis (p. 2, l. 22–23: "Lewis only noticed the boy
because he hadn't made it to this stage" (i.e. being beaten up)) it is possible no bullying actually
happened. When he runs and hides at the beach, he sees the bullies' shadows with fishing rods with
them (or what he assumes are their shadows) and then jumps over the concrete defence. He is
rescued by the people with the fishing rods. Why would they save him, if they despised him? In Paul
Fry's case the headmaster examines Lewis' notes. If he or any other teacher noticed the same
violence right in the middle of the school yard, wouldn't they intervene? Disregarding whether or
not they are good teachers/people. Perhaps Lewis witnessed a small altercation and then blew it out
of proportion. It is a possibility, that he is an unreliable narrator – he could have mental problems.
Regardless of his mental state, Lewis is still emotionally damaged from his childhood. It wasn't
sticks and stones that hurt him, it was words. Maybe allusions. Whether or not his bully was a burly,
older boy or his own mind, it's clear that bullying is not just physical violence anymore. A broken
arm will heal, but words will haunt you forever. Words will come back at your weakest moments
and traumatize you all over

The Influence Of Popsicle Sticks
Our project was a successful 9 out of 10. It's a 9 because the car did almost everything we wanted it
to. It moved in a straight line, went 10 meters, and completed the full turn. However, it did miss the
target because our car hit the turn too sharply and just missed the target. The major problems we
faced when building the car was getting it to travel in a straight line. It caused many unplanned
setbacks, but we were able to fix it in time for the test. We fixed this problem by managing to cut
popsicle sticks the length of the car, and glue them in a straight line, parallel from each other. We
then took the axles and carefully set them up between the popsicle sticks, so that they would hold
steady in place and go straight. After a few trails

Glow sticks and LED light sticks are commonly seen in popular society at concerts and festivals.
However, glow sticks have several other uses and were originally invented for use in the military. In

this light could be produced without energy or heat using a chemical compound called luciferin. A
Brooklyn–born chemistry specialist named Edwin A. Chandross accidentally identified the chemical

products using this mixture were created and patented by Michael M. Rauhut of American
Cyanamid. The first official glow–stick–type mechanism was granted to

Stick With A Strategic Plan
In today's society, it is very easy to get distracted and become lost. From an early age we are taught
how to manage our time, how to set up goals, and how to make plans to achieve those goals to avoid
becoming lost or distracted. But the trick can be sticking to our goals, as with most people their
goals and priorities change, or they accomplish their goals through hard work and dedication. A
business, however should stick with its strategic plans, as coming up with one plan but going in a
direction separate from the plan can cause trouble and quite possibility force the business to shut
down. If an individual or business accomplishes their goals what then? Well we come up with a new
goal, and start the process again. I will be focusing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Operational plans are created by the "frontline" or lower level managers who are on the floor with
the employees. They are aimed at the lowest levels of the business, and "...are focused on the
specific procedures and processes that occur" (Hartzell, n.d.). Frontline managers determine how the
tactical plans will be reached with operational plans. Operational plans become more specific by
focusing on how many employees are scheduled to work, how many shifts will be needed, and how
much of the annual budget is spread across the different departments of the company. With the
operational plans in place the business can move forward with achieving its goals as set by the
tactical and strategic plans (Solomon et al., 2012). Without formal planning, a company might
misunderstand its purpose, the focus of the business will be unclear to managers, and resources will
wasted. "...the sum total of the organization's effort might yield suboptimal results or outcomes or
yield optimal results that do not directly or indirectly contribute to the organization's purpose for
existence" (Simerson, pg. 2). With this mind, it becomes clear why it is so important for businesses
to come up with the right strategic plans, which lead to creating the right tactical plans, which lead
to creating the right operational plans, so that the goals that have been set by the strategic plans can

Stick Figures In Australia
For the Australian fairy tale, it has been a long journey in search of nationhood identity. With the
enduring legacy of Australia's history as a settler colony there was no surprise that it invested the
landscape with strangeness and it became a part of the dream like world within fairy tales. Through
the history of Australian literary culture, the mythology of the bush tradition has been a powerful
voice in the Australian cultural context, which continues to have strong force in creating national
identity. However, it has become an inaccurate form of cultural identity. Here I will show how the
texts 'The Gown of Cobweb Lace in Peg Maltbys collection Peg's Fairy book and 'Stick Figures' in

It is clear within Stick Figures' the world around them has evolved, and they are the ones that are out
of place and do not belong, however, there is a clear message of self–reflection as the stick figures
cause their abusers to question their own existence ' its as if they take all our questions and offer
them straight back. Who are you? Why are you here? What do you want?'(Tan, 69). The alienation
of these creatures draws upon a sense of ownership, somewhat reflecting the historic implications
that got us to Australia in the first

Hockey Stick History
Many of you are perhaps aware of the "World's Oldest Known Hockey Stick" that was in the news a
couple of years ago. Its most recent former owner, Mark Presley of Berwick, NS, sold it to the
Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, Quebec in January of 2015 for $300,000. Presley
happened upon the stick during the year 2000 as it hung on the wall of a North Sydney barber shop.
The building's proprietor at the time, George Ferneyhiugh, who has since retired from the
haircutting trade, had it hanging there since the early 1980s. The relic's original owner was William
Moffatt of North Sydney's Pottle Lake area and it is referred to as the "Moffatt Stick." Carved into
the stick's blade are the initials, "WM." In 2008 Presley purchased the stick from Ferneyhiugh for a
sum of $1,000 and then proceeded to find out the relic's long history. He took the stick to Mount
Allison University in Sackville, NB where experts in dendrochronology –– the science of dating
events through the study of growth rings in trees –– performed tests. They determined that the stick's
wood came from a tree that was chopped down somewhere between 1835 and 1838 making it the
oldest known hockey stick. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Stereotypes In Sticks And Stones
Throughout Sticks and Stones, Bazelon presents the readers with evidence to break through bullying
stereotypes. In order to clarify the situations that occur with bullying, Bazelon chooses to provide
the readers with facts to determine what stereotypes are true and which ones are deceiving. In Sticks
and Stones, we see how Aaron bullied Jacob, because Jacob was gay. However, bullies target others
for different reasons, but "kids like Aaron are the ones who are called bully–victims in the psych
literature...sometimes they lash out because they're frustrated over how they're being treated"
(Bazelon 71). Bullies are always viewed as the bad or mean kids in stereotypes, but what we do not
always realize is that the bully could be suffering in some way too. ... Show more content on

It could also be a cry for help or attention. In Monique's chapter, Bazelon explains that "kids who
bully, by contrast, have more varied profiles. This is one reason why bullying is such a stubborn
problem for schools: the perpetrators aren't a monolithic group" (Bazelon 30). Through this
information, Bazelon demonstrates how so many of these stereotypes are deceiving, and we need to
think more about the other factors that come to play with these stereotypes. When it comes to
bullies, most people tend to think it is always the popular kids or the school's "mean girls", however
the bullies may not always be those kids. As Monique shared in her story, even her friends turned on
her and began to join in on the tormenting against her. This clarifies that a bully is not always the
popular kids, yet sometimes it can be. There are several different types of bullies and they all lash
out at others for different reasons. Since Bazelon expressed these facts in her book, it resulted in the
readers taking a new approach to how they might normally classify or view a

Carrot or Stick?
INTRODUCTION
Tessera was an innovative developer company for the miniature technologies which were widely
used in the production of consumer electronics devices. Company's inventions mainly focus on
advanced chip packaging for microelectronic devices and image capturing devices. The company
practiced what intellectual property attorneys referred to as " carrot licensing". Carrot licensing is a
model where a company invents and patents a new idea. Then the company is licensing the idea to
other companies with the trade secrets and know–how, and helps them to implement the innovation
to the production. The opposite model to carrot licencing is the "stick licensing", in which a
company used either the threat of or actual litigation to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If the company had to resort to litigation, the process was expensive and time consuming.
Tessera frequently used carrot model and has seen it as a marketing exercise. Generally early in
licensing programs, licensees were very open to licensing as they didn't have any know–how. But
after some years of licensing, as the manufacturers no longer require a transfer of know–how, and as
volumes and consequently royalties climb, manufacturers attemp to work around the patented
technology. Also the existing manufactring infrasructure was capable of manufacturing such
technology after some time of widespread adoption. It is at this point that stick licensing is often
required. As the chip scale packaging was destined to be used so widely used, Tessera choosed the
carrot licensing instead of confining its application to a niche. So the type of the technology was
directly affecting the way of commercilization, application can be confined to a niche where
company would occupy vertically, or can be adopted to many other firms by licensing. But as
mentioned above after some time of commercialization, stick licensing was also needed.
PATENT ENFORCEMENT
The U.S. constitution gave Congress the power to " promote the devellopment of the useful arts" by
granting exclusive rights to inventers for a limited period of time. The purpose of a patent was to
assurre the rights of the creators in exchange for not keeping these inventions secret, thus overall
knowledge base grows.

The Big Stick Policy

  • 1. The Big Stick Policy The Big Stick Policy "Speak softly and carry a big stick," this was the slogan that president Theodore Roosevelt Used to describe the Big Stick policy. This sentence led to the foreign policy that Roosevelt deployed during his presidency hence the name "Big Stick" Policy. This policy meant that the U.S. should be fair in its dealings with other countries but must always be ready to protect its own interests or in other word negotiating peacefully while simultaneously threatening with the "big stick", or the military. Roosevelt first used the phrase in a speech at the Minnesota State Fair on September 2, 1901, twelve days before the assassination of President William McKinley, which subsequently thrust him into the Presidency. ... • 2. Personal Reflection Of Personal Ethics In The Classroom I am one of the numerous amount of students enrolled in your class and most likely, you have no idea who I am. I am hopeful that this letter will apprise you about my personality, work ethic, and other characteristics. When I was younger, I enjoyed being constantly active; whether that be hanging off the couch while watching T.V. or running around my house yelling incoherent phrases to drive my mother insane, I did it all. One day, I stumbled upon a video of a girl teaching the viewer how to do a skill named the back handspring (a skill where you push off from an upright standing position into vertical back onto your feet to complete a full rotation). In awe, it inspired me to attempt it myself, until I realized it took a lot more to flip backwards and expect to land on your hands without falling onto your face. I can recall myself watching a plethora of these varieties of videos in where people demonstrated how to do different certain skills. I would be fascinated by the idea that you can maneuver your body to do tricks that most people would not dare to attempt. Not long after that, I begged to try out and, to my amazement, ended up making it into what would become my gymnastics team. When I first began, I was not prepared for the amount of work that was required of the individual, both physically and mentally. I remember the first practice I attended was one of my most exhausting. Being a newcomer to such an intense sport, it allowed many, many mistakes. The quote said ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Seeing how the procedures of determination and development happen in perfect and modified conditions is key to deciding how to lessen the unfriendly effects of people on common differing qualities and profitability (Greenlees, 2015). Dangerous Toads Evolve Long Legs and Take Over Australia. ... Stick amphibians (Bufo marinus) were first gotten from Hawaii in 1935 to control the spread of scarabs that were attacking Australia's sugar stick edit. • 4. Popsticle Sticks Our boat is in a square shape so that the pennies can equally balance in each corner and the center. As seen on page 14 the material that makes up the boat are popsticle sticks because they seem to be stronger. If they're stronger they will be able to hold more pennies. The popsticles have a length of 11 cm, we decided to have this size because we couldn't add another roll of popsticle sticks since we were going to exceed our budget which was $1, 500.00 (page 12). If we include the propeller, the length of the boat would be 19 cm (page 9), due to the paper clip and wooden stick being added between the straw as seen on page 18. Me and my partner chose this deisgn because we wanted to create an innovative propeller, so we used straws, paper clips, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Influence Of Popsicle Sticks So for my math activity I choose to pick an easy 1st grade activity, and I am interested in teaching 1st grade. The activity requires the teacher to get Popsicle sticks, write on them from 1–20 and on the other the plus, minus and equal signs. And do addition and subtraction using those Popsicle sticks. The general principle of development states that all people develop at different rates, for some students this will be an easy task, they are more mature in their thinking, and they are above the average. Some students will struggle, they will be much slower in development and because of that it can affect their school studies. Also people development is in an order, the advanced student will most likely be doing well in all other subjects, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Essay about Demonstrative Cake Pop Speech Outline For Demonstration Speech Topic: Cake Pops General Purpose: To demonstrate Specific Purpose: To demonstrate to my audience how to make a delicious and simple cake pop. Thesis: I will be demonstrating how to make a I. Introduction: A. Attention Getter: In 2012 Starbucks made over $13.29 billion dollars. With that amount of money you could buy eight billion, eight hundred and sixty million of their cake pops. Though that seems like enough cake pops to satisfy anyones appitite I highly doubt that most of us have thirteen billion dollars to spend. B. Credibility: According to newspressnow.com, last updated May 8th 2012 "The start of the cake–pop frenzy has been attributed to a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If I wanted a picture I'd buy a painting." The second part is where the fun part actually starts, you're going to add one or two heaping spoonfuls of regular white frosting to the crumbled up cake you have. Keep adding frosting until you get the consistency pretty doughy, but still firm enough to handle. After kneeding the dough thoroughly you're going to want to roll the dough out inch size balls. A normal box of cake mix should make about 20 cake pops. After all the balls are rolled out, they should go in the fridge or freezer for about a half an hour to help them set. After those agonizing thirty minutes are up, you're able to take the cake pops out of the refrigerator or freezer, and then melt some almond bark. After dipping the stick in the almond bark, you're going to want to stick it about halfway through the now official "cake pop". The chocolate on the stick is to help the stick stay sturdy while you actually eat the sweet treat. When you've finished putting the sticks into each of the cake balls, you should put them back into the refrigerator in order to help the chocolate solidify. Transition: The last part we're going to focus on is probably the most simple. Decorating the cake pop. Using the previously melted almond bark, you can simply dip the cake pop in and spread a thin layer of chocolate all around the pop. While the chocolate is still wet, feel free to decorate in any way you'd like. For today I just used simple sprinkles but there ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. My Father And My Brother As a child, my brother Jean and I were not always very close, even though we are fairly close in age. As children, we went to school together and grew up learning the importance of family values, particularly the meaning of "sticking together." Every day we walked to school together. Before we ventured off to elementary school, our mother would say, "Stick together, and Jean, listen to your big brother!" Even though I was only two years older than Jean, I knew I was responsible if anything bad were to happen to him under my watch. My brother and I were quite daring as children and did not always follow all the rules. Also, Jean was more stubborn than I and did not know when the time for play should stop. I will never forget that one frightful day when the lesson about the value of my family and sticking together changed my life. It was a warm day towards the end of the school year, and everyone was anxious to start summer vacation. Throughout the day at the elementary school, I would see Jean about two times a day. Close to the end of the day, and the sunlight beaming into my fifth–grade classroom felt like a hundred degrees. Before we could leave, our teacher Ms. Harris wanted to give us a short vocabulary quiz. When she started to pass out the quiz, I was thinking of ways to get out of the assignment. At that very moment, something very frightening happened. All of a sudden, the sound of shuffling papers was violently interrupted by a loud boom that sounded ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Glow Sticks Experiment This experiment is about glow sticks so here are some facts. Let's talk about glowsticks and everything about them. Light is generated from a chemical reaction which is called chemiluminescence. Typical glow sticks use a hydrogen peroxide solution, a solution of phenyl oxalate ester, and a fluorescent dye. Glow sticks are plastic tubes containing glass vials that emit light when they are cracked/ bent. They have a glow time from 6–12 hours. It also depends on the size of the glow stick and other stuff like that. Glow sticks are also waterproof if you did not already know that. Energy created by the chemical reaction is what creates the color. If glow sticks did not have fluorescent dye there would be no color. Glow sticks might look like they ... • 10. Case Analysis Case brief and overview: Sher–Wood (formerly Sherwood–Drolet) has been a well–known Canadian hockey equipment manufacturer since 1949 (Zhang & Beamish, 2011, p. 23), predominantly specialising in wooden sticks for players from the National Hockey League down to players at the junior level. Sher–Wood also produces composite sticks, albeit at a much lower volume. Whilst hockey stick production has traditionally been based in North America, over the last decade there has been a significant shift towards global sourcing in the industry (Zhang & Beamish, 2011, p.21). This has been driven by a desire to access low–cost factors of production, secure cheaper material resources, and ultimately gain a competitive advantage. Sher–Wood's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In comparison, Sher–Wood offers specific products for a niche market. Despite this, Sher–Wood offers 27 models of player and goalie sticks – a considerably large amount for a company with a global market share of approximately 2% (Zhang & Beamish, 2011, p. 20). Secondly, composite sticks have been the dominant stick used among NHL players over the past decade (Zhang & Beamish, 2011, p.18), and as such have grown rapidly in popularity amongst children and amateur players (Zhang & Beamish, 2011, p.19). Despite the fact that Sher–Wood anticipates the composite stick business to grow in volume and profitability, there is a sufficient imbalance between market demand and Sher–Wood's product output, since wooden sticks still account for approximately half of their hockey stick models. (Zhang & Beamish, 2011, p. 24) Further to this, Sher–Wood's brand image and reputation are diminishing. This was affected by the loss of NHL star Jason Spezza to rival Reebok in 2008 in objection to the company's outsourcing to China (Zhang & Beamish, 2011, p. 23). Currently only 2.3% of NHL players use Sherwood sticks (Exhibit 1, Zhang & Beamish, 2011, p. 20). This is a concern for Sher–Wood, especially since "hockey sticks endorsed by professional hockey players enjoyed a strong position in the hocket stick market." (Zhang & Beamish, 2011, p. 19) Related to this issue is the fact that the market is showing signs of maturity, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Aesop: The Bundle Of Sticks For this week reading assignment, I had chosen to read a tale from Aesop's collection. Aesop was a seventh century BC Greek story–teller whose witty short tales have entertained and instructed countless of generations of young students. For example, my Grammar school teacher presented me a collection of his tales as a birthday gift, one and a half score years ago. Aesop was eminently popular in the Roman–Byzantine world; his tales were a required reading in grammar school curricula (Herrin, 2009). Traces of his tales can be discerned even in the "Sayings of the [Monastic] Elders" (Gerondikon); in fact, the story I have chosen to read is recorded as having been reenacted in real life by a wise dying ancient monk in Egypt. My chosen story is called "The Bundle of Sticks" (Aesop) which is about a father of three sons who did not get along very well. The father–being on the point of death and still worried about his sons– asked them to break a bundle of sticks. Understandably, none of the three sons were able to break it. "Unbundle it," the father said. The sons did so. "Now each try to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As a matter of fact, the Aesopeian tales do not even speak in terms of "virtue" and "vice" (Zafiropoulos, 2001); instead, they tend to illustrate a causative relationship between life choices and consequences– you do this and you get that. As a I was re–reading the story today, it dawned on me that this idea–that we make our own bed–was a recurring pattern in the classical Greek and Byzantine way of thinking; consider, for example, Apostle Paul words: "for the wages of sin is death" (Rom 6:23 KJV). Anecdotally, this is how I was raised as well–that I should carefully consider the possible consequences before setting in a course of action. Shrewd person she was, my ... The trauma can be several different things. But parental failure, mistrust, and abuse are some of the most horrible things a child can be exposed to. Some children are never able to let their traumas go, so they can live on with their lives. And therefor it will keep hunting them for the rest of their existence. Questions like "Why didn't my mother belief me?", "Why my?" and a lot of similar questions will always be right there, right in the back of your head. Lewis conceive sympathy with Paul Fray, but he is also using him as a means to get rid of his tormentors when he goes to the Headmaster with his observations which are concerning Paul Fray and the two Michaels. He is resigning his obsession, well knowing that he can not save Paul Fray, never could. He tried, and did his best. But it was the adults who made a big desertion to himself and to Paul Fray. • 14. That Tally Stick So many people have keepsakes to symbolize their love for one another. Couples have pictures and mementos to remind them of their special times. In "The Tally Stick", Jarold Ramsey introduces us to a couple who use a tally stick rather than pictures to represent what is important in their lives. Ramsey takes us from the beginning of the relationship, when the stick is bare, to the end when it is carved end to end. We learn of the outside events that build their love, as well as internal measure, upon which their love is built. According to Ramsey the stick is a part of the couple's relationship. The tally stick shows that love can be a long–lasting bond defined by failure and success that strengthen their relationship. Before there is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "Our tally stick is whittled nearly end to end; delicate as scrimshaw, it would not bear you up" (20). Ramsey mentions that the stick is polished with regrets. Because they both have regrets that helped build their love, the couple clusters those regrets with all other mishaps "hand over hand" (22). The author ends the poem with the couple looking back on everything they have done. Running their fingers from beginning to end they will explore everything that shaped their relationship and forgive each other's regrets. Ramsey refers to their blameless eyes, telling us that the two no longer blame one another and can go on loving through old age. Starting from when they were children, they follow the grain all the way to adulthood and "talk softly as of ordinary matters and in one another's blameless eyes go blind" (27). "The Tally Stick" is symbolic of everything this couple shares with each other. It not only shows special occasions like a picture but tells a detailed story of their life together. The couple relives the significant times they spent together by running their thumbs through the intricate notches. Detailed depictions of their wedding, the births of their children, the tragedies they have gone through can all be found within the stick. This stick defines the relationship, and is part of the each of them. My " friends " were bad influences on my life so I knew I had to choose better for myself. Since I've made the choice of dropping the negativity out of my life it has changed a lot for the better. • 16. Sticks and Stones Freedom of Speech is possibly the most respected American ideal. Envied by citizens of countries where self–expression is a right of some and stricken from others, we uphold this concept with defensive pride. However, we must ask ourselves if this freedom can ever go too far. When does lenience turn into naivety? If speech is abused so freely that it enslaves the minds of another should it become a privilege, rather than a right? In his essay "On Racist Speech", Charles R. Lawrence III argues for limitations on Freedom of Speech as described in the First Amendment to prevent only the most heinous racial remarks. While I understand why many Americans initially find limiting freedom of speech contradictory to the concept of our free states, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some citizens opposed a restriction on speech simply because they feel it is not a complete upholding of American law. However, we must decide whether the restriction of free speech for protection is entirely acceptable or not at all because responses are often inherently hypocritical. While opposition will often argue that racial comments cause no harm and are a right of the First Amendment, the same people may argue for restrictions of free speech in other circumstances. It is likely that the majority of people oppose allowing pedophiles the right to express their sexual feelings to a child over the internet, which is already a legally enforced restriction on freedom of speech. Although there may be no physical contact between the child and the pedophile, it is important to parents that their children are protected from the possibility of such a threat as well as any emotional distress caused by inappropriate comments. Further examples are found in government views on sexism in the workplace. How much can we restrict the class of people we defend before our laws become just as prejudice as the injustice they attempt to cease? Lawrence reminds us that the "Supreme Court... held that sexual harassment that creates a hostile or abusive work environment violates the ban on sex discrimination in employment of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964." Because none of my friends have shown up, I begin to play by myself. I know they are coming but I thought they would be here by now. I am lonely and I wish someone was here to play with me. As people are filling the yard, I am not recognizing any of the adults at the party. As of now, I am alone so I take my dog Goldie out to the deepest part of my backyard. 5:00pm Friday the 6th As I wonder when the cake will be served, I look back to my house. I continue playing with the sticks that are in front of me. Since I am by myself, I try to stack the sticks on top of one another. Bored, I walk through my yard to see if I recognize anyone. I find a huge stick on the ground, which grabs my attention. I always love clearing out the backyard with sticks so I continue on my way. As I pick up the stick, I swing it around like a sword. As long as I was home by curfew, did my own laundry, did the dishes three times a week after supper and kept my room clean, he was content and happy. I was only grounded one time in my childhood by him and he spanked me one time when I was a small child. I always felt he was someone I could run to when I needed it and I feel that a lot of his parenting traits are now my parenting traits. I feel I am friendly but firm. Battle Of Horseshoe Bend Strengths And Weaknesses The Battle of Horseshoe Bend illustrated some important lessons that are as applicable to today's military operational environments as they were back then These lessons are timeless. Studying this battle can help leaders and Commanders identify strengths and weakness that lead to mission success and enemy defeat. General Andrew Jackson had engaged the enemy Creek Indians in previous battles. He was able to learn valuable lessons and make adjustments to ensure that the Battle of Horseshoe Bend achieved his operational objectives and had the desired end state for mission success. Armies cannot sustain or conduct combat operations without effective logistical supply lines. Lack of supplies lead to poor morale and capitulation of forces. Jackson led several campaigns against the Creek Indians prior to the Battle of Horseshoe Bend but could not accomplish his operational objectives due to a lack of supplies and long supply lines. In the winter of 1814, Jackson suffered great losses when he led an Army of inexperienced, undisciplined and under supplied forces to fight the Red Sticks at Emuckfau and Enotochopco. He barely escaped with his life and was forced to retreat to Fort Strother. So now you must be wondering what tinder is? Well it's simple; tinder is a material that you light to start a fire. Tinder is also considered to be stage one in the fire building process. Which means it's the first material in the fire to burn, and it needs to light the next level. Materials that can be used as tinder is newspaper, dryer lint, hay, and cardboard. All Quiet On The Western Front Comradeship Analysis "We all share the same fear and the same life;we are nearer than lovers, in a simpler, a harder way;I could bury my face in them, in these voices, these words that have saved me and will stand by me". Comradeship is vital in war, because it keeps soldiers human. The theme of comradeship in All Quiet on the Western Front is embraced when the soldiers rescue each other during battle, stick together and not become separated, and keep each other's spirits up in the darkest of days. Soldiers rescuing each other during battle shows comradeship. While fighting on the front line, Paul becomes separated from his comrades and cannot search for them for fear of being shot down. "It is Kat and Albert who have come out with a stretcher to look for me," (Remarque 227). Paul's friends coming to search for him shows comradeship because they are being brave and risking their lives to find their friend. Going out to look for Paul shows that they care about and value him. During a bombardment, new recruits are traumatized, scared, and helpless because they do not know what to do, so veterans quickly teach them. "We teach them to fling themselves into holes as quick as lightning..."(Remarque 134). The soldiers try to help each other during battle, which displays comradeship because veterans want to help them live. They aren't doing this to have bodies to fight, but to save human souls. It's hard to understand that even some of your best friends and close family could actually be holding you back but once you cut that tie and push yourself you can be so much more successful. Personally I think the most successful people in life are the ones that can set A goal and not let anyone change their mind or run them a stray from their goal. Three pretty young girls walk into the grocery store, in only bathing suits, just as any guy would feel the urge to stare or even talk to them, he takes action by sticking up for them as they are getting thrown out of the store resulting in him quitting his job. This action we see would be the power of desire which is the theme throughout this story. In society today we tend to see lots of people especially teens afraid to stick up for what they believe in. With the power of desire, it builds up confidence, shows maturity in the coming of ages, and it even proves you can do what you believe in. If everyone had this much confidence like Sammy, our world may be a stronger place. Being confident is very essential in life and it is something many people tend to lack for many reasons. Some could be self–conscious in physical appearance or even believe they are not good enough. This strong confidence is strongly shown in the story based on the girl's appearances. However, the theme of the short story proves otherwise. Lewis, the main character, was bullied as a child. He's damaged from the experience – both mentally and physically. Even though his bullies never technically laid a finger on him, his life has been shaped by their actions. In this case, and many others, words have definitely hurt him. The story follows three perspectives: present–day Lewis, Lewis as a ... When he runs and hides at the beach, he sees the bullies' shadows with fishing rods with them (or what he assumes are their shadows) and then jumps over the concrete defence. He is rescued by the people with the fishing rods. Why would they save him, if they despised him? In Paul Fry's case the headmaster examines Lewis' notes. If he or any other teacher noticed the same violence right in the middle of the school yard, wouldn't they intervene? Disregarding whether or not they are good teachers/people. Perhaps Lewis witnessed a small altercation and then blew it out of proportion. It is a possibility, that he is an unreliable narrator – he could have mental problems. Regardless of his mental state, Lewis is still emotionally damaged from his childhood. It wasn't sticks and stones that hurt him, it was words. Maybe allusions. Whether or not his bully was a burly, older boy or his own mind, it's clear that bullying is not just physical violence anymore. A broken arm will heal, but words will haunt you forever. Words will come back at your weakest moments and traumatize you all over ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. The Influence Of Popsicle Sticks Our project was a successful 9 out of 10. It's a 9 because the car did almost everything we wanted it to. It moved in a straight line, went 10 meters, and completed the full turn. However, it did miss the target because our car hit the turn too sharply and just missed the target. The major problems we faced when building the car was getting it to travel in a straight line. It caused many unplanned setbacks, but we were able to fix it in time for the test. We fixed this problem by managing to cut popsicle sticks the length of the car, and glue them in a straight line, parallel from each other. We then took the axles and carefully set them up between the popsicle sticks, so that they would hold steady in place and go straight. After a few trails ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Glow Sticks History Glow sticks and LED light sticks are commonly seen in popular society at concerts and festivals. However, glow sticks have several other uses and were originally invented for use in the military. In the 1960s, scientists were interested in the light fireflies produced in nature. They discovered that this light could be produced without energy or heat using a chemical compound called luciferin. A Brooklyn–born chemistry specialist named Edwin A. Chandross accidentally identified the chemical mixes needed to create the glow of a glow stick when experimenting with luminol. The first light products using this mixture were created and patented by Michael M. Rauhut of American Cyanamid. The first official glow–stick–type mechanism was granted to ... • 35. Stick With A Strategic Plan In today's society, it is very easy to get distracted and become lost. From an early age we are taught how to manage our time, how to set up goals, and how to make plans to achieve those goals to avoid becoming lost or distracted. But the trick can be sticking to our goals, as with most people their goals and priorities change, or they accomplish their goals through hard work and dedication. A business, however should stick with its strategic plans, as coming up with one plan but going in a direction separate from the plan can cause trouble and quite possibility force the business to shut down. If an individual or business accomplishes their goals what then? Well we come up with a new goal, and start the process again. I will be focusing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Operational plans are created by the "frontline" or lower level managers who are on the floor with the employees. They are aimed at the lowest levels of the business, and "...are focused on the specific procedures and processes that occur" (Hartzell, n.d.). Frontline managers determine how the tactical plans will be reached with operational plans. Operational plans become more specific by focusing on how many employees are scheduled to work, how many shifts will be needed, and how much of the annual budget is spread across the different departments of the company. With the operational plans in place the business can move forward with achieving its goals as set by the tactical and strategic plans (Solomon et al., 2012). Without formal planning, a company might misunderstand its purpose, the focus of the business will be unclear to managers, and resources will wasted. "...the sum total of the organization's effort might yield suboptimal results or outcomes or yield optimal results that do not directly or indirectly contribute to the organization's purpose for existence" (Simerson, pg. 2). With this mind, it becomes clear why it is so important for businesses to come up with the right strategic plans, which lead to creating the right tactical plans, which lead to creating the right operational plans, so that the goals that have been set by the strategic plans can be ... • 36. Stick Figures In Australia For the Australian fairy tale, it has been a long journey in search of nationhood identity. With the enduring legacy of Australia's history as a settler colony there was no surprise that it invested the landscape with strangeness and it became a part of the dream like world within fairy tales. Through the history of Australian literary culture, the mythology of the bush tradition has been a powerful voice in the Australian cultural context, which continues to have strong force in creating national identity. However, it has become an inaccurate form of cultural identity. Here I will show how the texts 'The Gown of Cobweb Lace in Peg Maltbys collection Peg's Fairy book and 'Stick Figures' in Tales of Outter Suburbia by Shaun Tan, illuminates the evolution of illustration in the fairy tales which seems to have recorded the social history that has not been described in any other form, exploring ... In one the lone stick figure stands in at the end of the alleyway, all lines of the fence and pathway drawing the intended readers attention towards it (Tan, 68). The other, the creatures possessing humanistic qualities, as the three stick figures hold hands, showing a sense of quest to find their place in society, pulling together a sense of the urban landscape that is disconnected from the natural elements of the bush, that was smothered in pegs tale 'the gown of cobweb lace'. It is clear within Stick Figures' the world around them has evolved, and they are the ones that are out of place and do not belong, however, there is a clear message of self–reflection as the stick figures cause their abusers to question their own existence ' its as if they take all our questions and offer them straight back. Who are you? Why are you here? What do you want?'(Tan, 69). The alienation of these creatures draws upon a sense of ownership, somewhat reflecting the historic implications that got us to Australia in the first ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Hockey Stick History Many of you are perhaps aware of the "World's Oldest Known Hockey Stick" that was in the news a couple of years ago. Its most recent former owner, Mark Presley of Berwick, NS, sold it to the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, Quebec in January of 2015 for $300,000. Presley happened upon the stick during the year 2000 as it hung on the wall of a North Sydney barber shop. The building's proprietor at the time, George Ferneyhiugh, who has since retired from the haircutting trade, had it hanging there since the early 1980s. The relic's original owner was William Moffatt of North Sydney's Pottle Lake area and it is referred to as the "Moffatt Stick." Carved into the stick's blade are the initials, "WM." In 2008 Presley purchased the stick from Ferneyhiugh for a sum of $1,000 and then proceeded to find out the relic's long history. He took the stick to Mount Allison University in Sackville, NB where experts in dendrochronology –– the science of dating events through the study of growth rings in trees –– performed tests. They determined that the stick's wood came from a tree that was chopped down somewhere between 1835 and 1838 making it the oldest known hockey stick. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 38. Stereotypes In Sticks And Stones Throughout Sticks and Stones, Bazelon presents the readers with evidence to break through bullying stereotypes. In order to clarify the situations that occur with bullying, Bazelon chooses to provide the readers with facts to determine what stereotypes are true and which ones are deceiving. In Sticks and Stones, we see how Aaron bullied Jacob, because Jacob was gay. However, bullies target others for different reasons, but "kids like Aaron are the ones who are called bully–victims in the psych literature...sometimes they lash out because they're frustrated over how they're being treated" (Bazelon 71). Bullies are always viewed as the bad or mean kids in stereotypes, but what we do not always realize is that the bully could be suffering in some way too. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It could also be a cry for help or attention. In Monique's chapter, Bazelon explains that "kids who bully, by contrast, have more varied profiles. This is one reason why bullying is such a stubborn problem for schools: the perpetrators aren't a monolithic group" (Bazelon 30). Through this information, Bazelon demonstrates how so many of these stereotypes are deceiving, and we need to think more about the other factors that come to play with these stereotypes. When it comes to bullies, most people tend to think it is always the popular kids or the school's "mean girls", however the bullies may not always be those kids. As Monique shared in her story, even her friends turned on her and began to join in on the tormenting against her. This clarifies that a bully is not always the popular kids, yet sometimes it can be. There are several different types of bullies and they all lash out at others for different reasons. Since Bazelon expressed these facts in her book, it resulted in the readers taking a new approach to how they might normally classify or view a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Carrot or Stick? INTRODUCTION Tessera was an innovative developer company for the miniature technologies which were widely used in the production of consumer electronics devices. Company's inventions mainly focus on advanced chip packaging for microelectronic devices and image capturing devices. The company practiced what intellectual property attorneys referred to as " carrot licensing". Carrot licensing is a model where a company invents and patents a new idea. Then the company is licensing the idea to other companies with the trade secrets and know–how, and helps them to implement the innovation to the production. The opposite model to carrot licencing is the "stick licensing", in which a company used either the threat of or actual litigation to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If the company had to resort to litigation, the process was expensive and time consuming. Tessera frequently used carrot model and has seen it as a marketing exercise. Generally early in licensing programs, licensees were very open to licensing as they didn't have any know–how. But after some years of licensing, as the manufacturers no longer require a transfer of know–how, and as volumes and consequently royalties climb, manufacturers attemp to work around the patented technology. Also the existing manufactring infrasructure was capable of manufacturing such technology after some time of widespread adoption. It is at this point that stick licensing is often required. As the chip scale packaging was destined to be used so widely used, Tessera choosed the carrot licensing instead of confining its application to a niche. So the type of the technology was directly affecting the way of commercilization, application can be confined to a niche where company would occupy vertically, or can be adopted to many other firms by licensing. But as mentioned above after some time of commercialization, stick licensing was also needed. PATENT ENFORCEMENT The U.S. constitution gave Congress the power to " promote the devellopment of the useful arts" by granting exclusive rights to inventers for a limited period of time. The purpose of a patent was to assurre the rights of the creators in exchange for not keeping these inventions secret, thus overall knowledge base grows. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
