! The article concerns the common gun debate. Lately, whether or not a ban
should be placed on guns or at least tighter restrictions are being debated across the
nation. One state has decided to take action. In Denver, Colorado background checks
will be run on those wishing to purchase a gun. The debate has been ongoing and the
state did not get any support from the republican party. Before the new bill will become
official, Governor John Hickenlooper still must sign off on it. He has not released any
statements as to whether or not he will sign the document so those for it are left waiting.
! Colorado did approve four other gun control measures earlier in the week. Much
of the controversy is between those who think there shouldnʼt be gun control and those
who want it. Many arenʼt satisfied with the restrictions wanting more in place where
others thinking their rights are being taken away. Many feel they have the right to bare
arms and are not at all happy with restrictions being put into place. Many lash out at the
democrats by saying instead of worrying about gun control we should be worried about
bigger problems like all of those out of work.
! Colorado is paving the way into stricter gun regulations fueled by past shootings.
The Batman massacre and columbine were both large shootings to take place in the
state. After what happened in Connecticut, Colorado is anxious to get the situation
under control for fear of more shootings to come. While restricting gun sales through
background checks will not eliminate the problem they are hoping to reduce the risk of
these mass shootings occurring again.
! I do agree placing restrictions on guns would help the issue. I donʼt think they
need to be all out banned though. People will always find a way to get their hands on
guns. This is really no different than drugs. Drugs are illegal... yet you can walk into any
high school and find whatever drug your heart desires. I think the biggest concern
shouldnʼt be with guns themselves rather than mental health. Focus on health care and
covering mental health and you wonʼt have as many people going around shooting
everyone. Going after guns is a quick fix. It isnʼt going to the actual source of the
problem. In order to handle the shooting problem, we need to go to the root and focus
more energy on mental health rather than whether or not people can access guns. As
far as guns go, even if illegal, if there is a will there is a way.
