Presentation of a Documentary analysis

2. Themes
• Religion/Crime, Murder, Punishment, Extremis
m, Musical, Influence. Possession &
Control, Youth, Responsibility, Psychological, Bl
ame.

3. Narrative Structure
• Linear, worked from begining to end. The
outcomes were Summarised in written
format, and a conclusion was used which
ended the story. "Manson was Pardoned".
Parallel narratives - Manson's storys and
influence set during the event, and the
investigation and reaction set afterwards. Lots
of reconstructions throughout.

4. Camerawork
• Use of Low angle shot, makes Manson look
powerful, Use of Voyeurism (Narcistic/Scopophilic)
• Lots of archive footage- which the director has no
camera control over.
• Reconstructions- Talking Head Shots, Voyeuristic
shots, Long angular approach to filming, Dynamic
approach to filming, Covert style.
• Interviews- Midshots or Medium Close-ups, Always
(Street Seller = Vox pop) long shots of grand religious
buildings, usually at night to add an eerie feel.

5. Mes-En-Scene
• Manson fans wear lots of black coloured
clothing & make-up, lighting low on stage
when manson is performing. Normal people
wear normal clothing, youth often portrayed
as negative and bad. A lot of negative
portrayls painting a picture in a bad light.
Antithesis- Polarisation of two things, places the
slow good natured nun right next to the youth
smoking & drinking to create stark contrast.

6. Sound
• Music creates a sad atmosphere, synchronous
gospel music relates to pictures on screen like
when a priest is visiting one of the murderers.
Voice-overs used during confessions with
translator, Massive constrast between choir
music and church bells with Mansons heavy
metal and screaming. Transient eerie drones
added to create a negative atmosphere around
the act. Non-diegetic heart beats to create
dramatic atmosphere- sounds of beating &
stabbing overlaid also.

7. Editing
• There is multiple cutaways frequently during Mansons
interviews, to help illustrate points he's making.
• Long takes,- recounts of statements & reconstructions.
Contrasts to when Manson is the focus on the editing
speeds up dramatically. Lots of cutaways used during
interviews. Simple graphics used. Plain ariel style font.
• Long takes emphasise slow pace of life i nthe village
and lenght of trial.
• Fast pace shows that Mason has disturbed the way of
life.

8. Archive Material
Archive material shows pictures of the nun who
died, churches in the area and the trial with
Manson.
Graphics
Title of documentary appears at start and before
any breaks.
Basic white font used, no real graphic effects.
Just simple text overlayed to introduce people
& places.
