3. Location
The Sygna is located on
Stockton beach New
South Wales. The Sygna
is located not far from
Nobby's Beach.
4. Size
The Sygna weighed
53,000 tonnes and the
depth of the ship was
approximately 13.31m.
The width is exactly
32.16m and the length is
precisely 217.3m. The
reason the Sygna was
so heavy was so that it
could hold heavy
weights.
5. Appearance
The boat is so old and
looks so rusty because
it's been there for more
than 35 years.It sunk on
the 26th May 1974 so it
makes it 39 years old.
On this day the Stern
lies on Stockton beach
rusting away.
6. History
The Sygna was
launched in 1967 and
was out of Service on
May 26th 1974. The
boat was launched to
carry heavy objects like
coal to places. The
Sygna sank on May
26th 1974 on Stockton
or Birubi Beach near
Newcastle during a
storm. The ship was
battling 185km winds
the night of the storm.
7. History
The Sygna was waiting
outside the Newcastle
port to load 50,000
tonnes of coal . The sea
swells got up to 17
metres and the ships
driver stayed near shore
incase of escape.
8. There aren't many
animals near the Sygna
but there are plenty of
tiny fish with the
smallest size of 7.9mm
named Paedocypris.
Marine animals
There are 3 other fish
with sizes of 9mm,
8.4mm and 10mm.
The dwarf Pygmy Goby
is 9mm
The stout instant fish Is
8.4mm
The Dwarf Goby is
10mm and all these fish
swim around the wreck.
9. Impact on the animals
There was a Big oil spill
that impacted the
animals lives. The oil
has gotten into the
fishes body,that is how it
has impacted their lives.
10. Introduced species to the
area
More and more fish
come into the ocean
everyday. The fish either
get washed closer to the
Sygna by the waves
pushing them,
(especially the tiny fish)
or they make their way
there.
11. Interesting facts
There was an oil spill on
Stockton beach that
spread for exactly 16km
because of the wreck.
Many shipping experts
believe that the Sygna
could rust to the shore
within ten years.
12. Interesting facts
After the bow go cut off
the boat it lay in
Salamander Bay for two
years before being broken
up and being towed to
Taiwan.
The Stern is still on
Stockton beach and it has
slowly been collapsing
because of the rust falling
off.
13. Interesting facts
The Sygna is 7.7km
from the southern end of
Stockton Beach and you
can see the top of the
boat from the Southern
end.
There are two types of
oil on the ship,bunker oil
and diesel oil. There
was 2136 tonnes of
bunker oil and 163
tonnes of diesel oil so
together it would make
2299 tonnes of oil so
there is 1599 tonnes of
oil left if no more oil has
leaked out since the last

15. Impact on the
environment
The night of the storm
oil leaked out of the boat
into the ocean and
caused some of the
water to rust. 700
tonnes of bunker oil
leaked into the ocean
and no cleanup or
recovery was taken.

17. Protecting the
environment
I suggest that the council could
put tiny nets around the ship so
that the marine animals don't
eat away the rust because the
rust goes all through the
ocean.
The port Stephens council
could dive down to the Sygna
with tanks and put the oil in the
tanks so that there are no more
leakages that impact the
animals lives.
