Tiny's CEO Andrew Roberts tackles the latest hot topic in content management during his presentation at the Gilbane Digital Experience conference. The question? Is block-based editing the future of web content management systems?
25. Lessons learned
● Change for the sake of change
○ Reuse mental models as much as possible
● QA and effort around fixing writing flows
● Minimalism can create complexity - block toolbars, block menus, top
toolbars (left & right), sidebars, quick inserters, etc. etc.
26. Lessons learned for other developers
Modernize today, try and avoid dividing into “Classic” & “New”
● Think more Facebook than Snapchat
● Don’t underestimate the effort
Writing and layout flows are difficult to combine in the same tool.
Prioritize one or the other.
Vertical SaaS (combined with other features) is a $500B opportunity
31. For content management buyers
Lean on advisors, it is a complex choice
Forms are a decent interface for casual content contributors
Is a page builder UI needed? If so, invest in training
Optimize for writing or layout?
32. TinyMCE is better & more popular than ever
V5 is here, and it’s open source
(2010-2015 CAGR of -1.5% for printing & writing, -5.6% for newspaper)

Microsoft Word… it is complex
Gutenberg tried not to be… but ended up complex too. It is sort of inevitable with editing tools
Office 365 now has 180 million monthly active users. Through thousands of practice sessions from age 5 until we reach the workforce and beyond, we develop the neural pathways of how to use general purpose tools like Word.
