3. Is Dialysis the next big opportunity in Indian
Healthcare?
End stage renal disease, or ESRD, is the last stage of chronic kidney disease (CKD).
This means that the kidneys are functioning below 10 percent of their normal
function, and they can no longer support a person’s day-to-day life. At this stage, the
kidneys can no longer remove waste and/or excess water from the patient’s body.
ESRD usually comes after CKD.
When ESRD is diagnosed patients need dialysisor a kidney transplant to stay alive.
Dialysis removes waste from the blood and/or excess water when the kidneys aren’t
functioning. It may be performed either at a dialysis facility (in-center) or at home,
using home haemodialysis or peritoneal dialysisif the patient is a good candidate for
one of these treatments.
An ESRD patient needs 3 dialysis sessions per week, which means 156 sessions annually
till the patient gets a Kidney Transplant. To summarize, the total potential of the market
stands at 577 million dialysis sessions annually (3.7Mn*156 sessions per patient annually).
At even a price point of Rs 1,000 per dialysis, the potential of the market is worth Rs 577
Bn annually

5. Investment required
A Basic Dialysis machine from a reputed company would
cost you Rs. 5,50,000. One technician would be required for
2-3 machines at a salary of about 25000/month. A Staff
nurse would be required for every two patients and her
salary would be about 15000/month. Single dialyzer diaysis
would cost you Rs. 1200 For Consumables and multi use
dialysis would cost you Rs. 800. You would need to have a
Nephrologist on retainership for supervision and he would
charge you about Rs. 60000 per month for 1 hour per day
retainer-ship.
