What is the mobile phone industry’s stand on this issue
1. What is the mobile phone industry’s stand on this
issue?
Cellular mobile telecom service providers as well as handset
manufacturers take allegations of adverse health impacts very seriously.
The last thing they want is to be hit with multi million dollar product
liabilty lawsuits. Or to lose most of their subscribers & customers.
Therefore they have participated enthusiatically in research studies about
the possible impacts on health of cell phones & towers. The
comprehensive INTERPHONE study of ICNIRP/WHO was largely funded by
the industry in Europe. Indian norms on towers are ten times stricter than
international norms. Indian norms on handsets are 20% stricter than
international norms. Indian operators who are found to be emitting in
excess of prescribed norms can be fined Rs Ten Lakhs per violation. Dept
of Telecom enforcement cells conduct surprise audits of towers. Handsets
whose SAR Specific Absorption Rate exceed specified limits of 1.6 watts
per kilogram cannot be imported into India or sold in India. In fact, some
Chinese handsets who were found to be emitting as high as 5-10 watts
have been banned.
