A man will walk out of his house to run an errand wearing whatever it is that he is wearing, but a woman will go even to the grocery store dabbing on her lipstick and making sure she’s wearing the right kind of shoes to go with her apparel.
1. Shoe Cleaning Smooth and Effortless
There is an old saying, “Shoes maketh the man.” We’ll extend the saying to include women
too, because in general, women appear to possess far more shoes than men. One reason
that women’s wardrobes contain many more pairs of shoes than men’s wardrobes is that
women tend to be more fashion-conscious than men. A man will walk out of his house to
run an errand wearing whatever it is that he is wearing, but a woman will go even to the
grocery store dabbing on her lipstick and making sure she’s wearing the right kind of shoes
to go with her apparel.
There’s a huge range of shoe types available in the market. There’s the general leather
shoes for everyday use that come in black or brown. Then there’s the suede shoes for
lounging at home, or at a friend’s place. White canvas loafers look great when you’re out
sailing your yacht. Then there are the vinyl shoes that come in a variety of glossy colors to
match the outfit you’re wearing—generally, women wear vinyl, but many avant-garde men
do, too.
Wear shoes to make them last. Sounds ironic, doesn’t it? Once you’ve bought a pair of
shoes, don’t be niggardly about wearing them. Like musical instruments, shoes too cry out
to be worn. Change shoes as often as you can; this will keep the fabric breathing and free of
cracking.
That’s why shoe cleaning is so important. Having said that, let’s discuss how to make
your shoe cleaning smooth and effortless.
2. Dust them clean after every wear. Once you’re home, wipe the dust, grime and
grease off your shoes. Keep a soft cloth in your shoe drawer and use this only for dusting
your shoes. If you’re feet have been in the wet, stand up the shoes against the wall and let
the moisture dry off. Then wipe them clean.
Check the soles of your shoes. Clean the soles of shoes with a wet cloth and check
regularly for cracks starting to appear.
Polish leather shoes regularly. It’s a good idea to do a weekly polish of your leather
shoes. This ensures that dust and dirt don’t accumulate on them, and hence make your
work much less of an effort than if you were to polish them after long intervals.
Polish color. The color of the polish is extremely important. For example, if you’ve
purchased a pair of shoes of rich burgundy color, it’s a bad idea to polish them using dark
tan—although the two colors are fairly close. The wrong color will change the color of the
shoes permanently and destroy the original polish.
Vinyl uppers. For shoes that have vinyl uppers, use a neutral cream polish. A neutral
cream can be used for any color of shoes.
Canvas uppers. For canvas uppers, first brush off the dust using a mini-vacuum cleaner
for best results. Then take a damp cloth and gently wipe off the remaining dust.
Suede uppers. Suede shoes are best sent to a laundry that offers a shoe cleaning service.
Suede requires specialized treatment that only a professional cleaning service can perform.
Cleaning equipment. For leather shoes of different colors, you’ll need to stock up on
several brushes, one for each color. You’ll need one brush for a neutral cream shade. Have
a couple of soft cloths for the final finish.
The cleaning process. First, clean the dust off the shoes. Then apply the neutral shade.
Then apply one coat of polish and polish off. Then apply a second coat and polish. Finally,
get the shine out by gently rubbing with the soft cloth.
